Physical Activity and Total Health
It is not wise to start a sport or activity without careful preparation
Consult a physician, physical education teacher, or coach
Set appropriate goals
Getting Started
Training Program – this is a program of formalized physical preparation for participation in a sport.◦ Food provides energy necessary for top performance.◦ Hydration – is the addition of body fluids (water)
Body looses water by sweating and intense breathing, which can lead to dehydration.
1st sign of dehydration is fatigue Your body can not work effectively Thirst is not a good indicator Thirst indicates you are already dehydrated Drink several cups of water 2 hours before a work out
and again 15 minutes before a workout
Sports and Nutrition
This is another part of making healthful decisions and maintaining and athletic training program
Avoid:◦ Tobacco ◦ Alcohol ◦ Anabolic steroids
Avoiding Harmful substances
Anabolic steroids- chemicals similar to the male hormone testosterone
Sometimes taken illegally Increases muscle mass Increases performance
Avoiding Harmful Sub. Cont.
Negative consequences Increased risk of cancer and heart disease Sterility or inability to have children Skin problems acne and hair loss Unusual weight gain or loss Sexual underdevelopment and dysfunction Violent, suicidal, or depressive tendencies Illegal distribution is a felony Athletes who test positive risk their careers
Anabolic steroids
Sleep helps the body re-energize.◦ Too little sleep disrupts the nervous system causing◦ Slowed reaction time◦ Lack of concentration ◦ Depression
Teens need between 8-10 hours of sleep each night
Trouble with sleeping◦ Look for a cause◦ Try rearranging your schedule to allow time to unwind
before bed◦ Do not exercise before bed time◦ Try reading or taking a bath before bed
Adequate Rest
Effort and Ability◦ We all have different physical abilities◦ Heredity plays a part with speed and endurance◦ Be realistic about your natural ability◦ This does not mean you can’t follow your dreams
if you give it your all

Excessive need to win or be first can have negative outcomes◦ You will not die if you loose, remember it is a game
Demonstrating good sportsmanship will help you avoid conflict.
