Physical Education - Scavenger Hunt
Grade 3
PE Curriculum Outcomes: Doing GCO 1: Students will be expected to demonstrate efficient and effective movement skills and
concepts.
Doing GCO 2: Students will be expected to demonstrate a functional level of activity and specific
motor skills.
Doing GCO 4: Students will be expected demonstrate an ability to cooperate with others.
Doing SCO 13: Students will be expected to demonstrate activity-specific motor skills in a variety of
alternate environments.
Objective: Students will work in teams of 3-4 to find objects listed on a scavenger hunt. Students will
also be asked to demonstrate movement and motor skills by performing actions while completing the
scavenger hunt.
Materials: Paper copies of the scavenger hunt (one per group)
Pencils(one per group)
Bean bags (one per group)
Skipping ropes (one per group)
Introduction: (5 minutes) Prepare before the class begins by hiding one bean bag and one skipping rope for each team to find.
These items should be within established boundaries. To further practice motor skills, hide the items in
places where students may need to jump or climb to get to them. When the class begins, explain to the
students they will be doing a scavenger hunt of items that can be found within the boundaries of the
outdoor classroom. Quickly review the boundaries of where they may go to find their items. Read the
instructions to the class. Be sure to point out that some of the items also have a physical action
component, in which they may need to jump, hop, skip, etc, until they find the item. Tell them this is so
they can practice the movements they have already learned in physical education. Once everyone is
aware of the rules, have them get into groups of 3-4 and give each group a pencil and a copy of the
scavenger hunt.
Main Lesson: (20 minutes) Give the students this time to complete the scavenger hunt sheet. Walk around the area to be sure
students are on task, within the classroom boundaries, and to help those who need it. Be sure to watch
for students performing the actions on the sheet as well as writing down the items they find.
Closure: (5 minutes) Bring the class together and discuss some of the objects they found. Ask for any items they found that
may be unique or for items that were difficult to find. End the lesson by asking students to model some
of the actions they were asked to do while on their scavenger hunt.
Differentiation: To differentiate for students with low mobility, replace locomotor actions with non-locomotor actions
such as: bend, twist, or curl, and have them move a body part, such as their arm, while searching for
their next object.
Assessment: Assessment will be done through observation as the teacher walks around to make sure each group is
on task. Also, the teacher can be sure the students know how to perform the movements on the
scavenger hunt by asking them to model those given on the activity.
Use this check list to assess student work following the scavenger hunt.
