The Carson Health Network serves the communities of Clinton, Gratiot, Ionia and Montcalm counties. Its 10 family-practice affiliated physician offices are located in Ashley, Carson City, Greenville, Fowler, Ithaca, Lyons, Maple Rapids and Stan-ton. Carson City Hospital is affiliated with the Sparrow Health System.
What is the difference between an M.D. and a D.O.?
Since both M.D.s and D.O.s have extensive training and rigorous certi-fication, you can feel confident in relying on either kind of doctor to give you state-of-the-art care. However, patients often ask what the difference is between a D.O. and an M.D.
D.O. stands for Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, while M.D. stands for Doctor of Medicine. Both D.O.s and M.D.s attend four years of medical school and take comparable state licensing exams. Doctors of Osteopath-ic Medicine, have additional training in the musculoskeletal system, with a special focus on the whole person and preventive care.
Some D.O.s also use osteopathic manipulative treatment, or OMT. This is a technique in which the doctor uses his or her hands to help diagnose the injury or illness. Manipulations may then be used to improve circula-tion and nervous system functioning, to help the body heal itself.

Carson City Hospital (CCH) has been recognized with a 2009-2010 Hospital Value Index™: Best in Value™ Award, as a result of the study conducted by Data Ad-vantage, LLC, the nation’s leader in measuring healthcare value. CCH ranked among the top tier of all hospitals nationwide.
Specifically, the Hospital Value In-dex™ recognized CCH for Excel-lence in Quality, Affordability, Ef-ficiency, and Satisfaction.
The Hospital Value Index™ is the first and only performance indica-tor to focus on the value hospitals provide to their community and utilizes the latest publicly avail-able data, including Hospital Com-pare from July 2009, to recognize these accomplishments.
“Value is increasingly important to patients and consumers who de-cide which hospital they will ac-cess for care,” said Hal Andrews, CEO of Data Advantage. “The Hospital Value Index™ is the first award to recognize those hospi-tals providing exceptional value of care to their communities, and Carson City Hospital has achieved great results.”
The Hospital Value Index™ pulled data from approximately 4,500 general acute-care hospitals, serving approximately 30.1 mil-lion consumers in the nation. It defines a hospital’s “value” by its success in four critical areas:
· Quality, including CMS’s Core Measures, patient safety and re-admission rates;· Efficiency, including the relative measure of the cost to the hospital for providing services· Affordability, a relative compari-son of prices charged for in-patient and outpatient services; and· Patient satisfaction as measured by HCAHPS.
The full Hospital Value Index™ study and list of findings can be found online atwww.HospitalValueIndex.com.

Digital mammography offers precision, reduced exam times and, in most cases, more patient comfort. That’s why Car-son City Hospital made the decision to invest in this state-of-the-art system. It’s part of the hospital’s focus on “com-prehensive care, close to home.”
“We provide a truly comprehensive scope of women’s health services here at Car-son City,” said Bruce L. Traverse, Carson City Hospital President and CEO. “And our radiologists and mammographers have acquired the stringent credential-ing for interpretation and performance of digital mammography that is required by the American College of Radiology and the federal Mammographic Quality Standards Act. We’re very proud of our skilled staff.”
Digital mammography allows the radi-ologist to view the X-ray images more closely, focusing on suspicious or con-
cerning areas, according to Carson City Hospital’s chief radiologist Donna R. Moyer, D.O. “This technology will enable any radiologist to make immediate deci-sions about what needs to happen with each patient,” she said. “Because digital mammography takes less than half the time of traditional film-based exams, images may be reviewed – as each situ-ation allows – while a patient is still in the examination room.”
Dr. Moyer said that Carson City Hospi-tal’s Radiology Department also offers Computer-Aided Detection (CAD). CAD provices a “second read” of the mam-mogram by a computer. This assists the radiologist in making an accurate diag-nosis, much in the same way spell-check is used in word processing.
For more information about making a digital mammography appointment, call 989-584-3971 ext. 469 or ext. 456.

Trans-fats are off the menuTrans fats have been used for many years to deep-fry foods. They are created through an industrial process that adds hydrogen to liquid veg-etable oil to make them more solid … and they are bad for our health.
“That’s why Carson City Hospital has voluntarily eliminated industrial trans fats from our food service program,” said Anne Parcher, Food & Nutrition Services Manager at Carson City Hospital (CCH). “It’s part of a state-wide initiative focused on improving patient and community health.”
CCH joined more than 110 Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA)-member hospitals in voluntarily eliminating industrial trans fats from hospital vending machines, cafeterias and patient nutrition programs by the beginning of 2010. Many other hospitals are working toward this goal throughout the coming year.
“Quality health care extends beyond medical treatment and procedures,” said CCH President and CEO Bruce L. Traverse, FACHE. “It includes pro-viding an all-around healthy environment for our patients, their families, friends and hospital staff.”

CCH named Most WiredCarson City Hospital (CCH) has been recognized as one of the nation’s Most Wired-Small and Rural hospitals, according to the results of the 2010 Most Wired Survey released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. CCH is one of only 25 hospitals in the United States recognized with a Most Wired award in this category this year.
Hospitals understand the importance of health information technology (IT) and the benefits of its widespread adoption, yet as a field still face signifi-cant barriers to implementation according to a newly released survey of America’s Most Wired hospitals and health systems.
Carson City Hospital has received the Most Wired award eight times since 1999.
“We’re so proud of this award, because we know here at Carson City Hos-pital that having a solid, state-of-the-art technology infrastructure improves our efficiency, as well as the quality and safety of care for our patients,” said Bruce L. Traverse, CCH President and CEO. “That’s why we work so hard to build this outstanding technological infrastructure – for our pa-tients.”
This year’s survey reveals continued progress for hospitals in patient safety initiatives, including the fact that 51% of medication orders were done electronically by physicians at Most Wired hospitals, up from 49% last year.

Cardiac computerized tomography angiography (CTA) combines the technology of a conventional CT scan with that of traditional angiography to test for various types of heart disease. It is now being offered as a diagnostic service at Carson City Hospital.
CTA is an excellent diagnostic procedure because it provides powerful X-ray images of a patient’s heart and heart vessels and, unlike a traditional coronary angiogram, does not involve the use of a catheter or arterial puncture. CTA requires less recovery time than traditional angiograms and is becoming a popu-
lar option for patients with a moderate risk of blocked or narrowed arteries.
“This new service is of great diagnostic value,” said Donna R. Moyer, D.O., Carson City Hospital’s chief radiologist. “We are committed to providing state-of-the-art care in our rural community – this is just another example of that commitment.”
CTA is commonly used to assess known or suspected cardiac disease, a variety of aneurysms, “hardening of the arteries,” arterial blood clots, vascular infec-tion, pericardial disease and cardiac function. Not all patients are candidates for the CTA option. Pregnant women should not undergo CTA, and, in some cases, it may be better for patients with coronary artery disease to have a traditional coronary angiogram. Physicians evaluate each situation to determine an indi-vidual patient’s best course of action.

ER or Primary Care?If you sprain your ankle in a weekend game, should you go to the emer-gency room? If your child has a high fever, should you take him to the emergency room or call the pediatrician?
Sometimes it’s hard to know what kind of care is needed–and where you should go to get it. Here are some guidelines to help you decide.
When should I call my primary care physician?
Unless you are experiencing a life-threatening emergency, your primary care physician is the place to start. Many primary care physicians stay open later and on weekends to provide access for their patients, and most have after-hours coverage by phone. You may be able to speak with your physician, or with another physician on call, to determine if you need im-mediate care or if you can be seen the next day.
What is an emergency?
An emergency is a serious medical condition or symptom (including severe pain) caused by an injury, illness, or mental illness, that arises suddenly and requires immediate care and treatment to avoid disability or death.
If you believe that without immediate care and treatment your life or health is in jeopardy, you should go to the emergency room. If it’s an emergency to you, it’s an emergency to us.
Reasons to go to an emergency room include, but are not limited to: • Signs of a heart attack (including but not limited to chest pain) • Signs of a stroke, like sudden onset of numbness in any extremity • Severe shortness of breath • Bleeding that won’t stop after 10 minutes of direct pressure • Pregnancy bleeding or complications • Poisoning or suspected poisoning • Life-threatening allergic reactions • Major injury such as head injury • Coughing up or vomiting blood • Suicidal or homicidal thoughts
