St. Vincent’s One Nine- teen Kid’s Cooking Camp is a one-week camp featuring two different and exciting themes offered four weeks every summer. “Regional Favorites” was the theme for the month of June. Campers learned about a different region of the United States each day of the week. It is exciting for them to learn what inspired the name and background of some of their favorite foods. Some of their regional favor- ites were Mississippi sweet potato fries, New York bagel (homemade) with apples and mascarpone cheese, New Orleans red beans and brown rice, California basil pesto pizza, and Philadelphia cheese “steak” made from portobello mushrooms. The theme for the month of July is “Color Me Healthy.” Each day, the kids will learn about healthy foods of a specific color and as the say- ing goes, “a colorful plate is a healthy plate!” In addition to sharpening their cooking skills, campers are also given lessons on various nutri- tion topics such as portion control and the benefits of using herbs and spices. New this year is an herb garden July 2010 Physicians Diagnostics Physical Therapy Fitness Spa Wellness Fitness One Nineteen Hours of Operation Monday–Friday 5:00 a.m.–9:30 p.m. Saturday 7:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Sunday 1:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. Note: The pool, sauna, and steam room close 15 minutes before the facility closing times. Kid’s Cooking Camp Both Fun and Educational We would like to welcome World Oyama Karate as our partner in offering karate and women’s self defense and conditioning classes here at Fitness One Nineteen! World Oyama Karate is an inter- national organization with schools in 19 countries across Europe, Asia, North America, and South America. Supreme Grand Master Saiko Shihan Oyama and his brother, Soshu Oyama, are the founders of World Oyama Karate, which offers a Japanese, full-contact style that combines the best elements of traditional Japanese karate with modern training principles. Karate has given children, teens, young adults, and even not-so-young adults greater discipline, better health, and self-defense skills. It instills a sense of respect towards one- self and others. Students from all parts of the world travel to the United States to train with Saiko Shihan Oyama and/or Soshu Oyama in order to become world-class fighters or instructors. Sensei Tetsu Yanagisawa, who will be instructing both classes at One Nineteen, began his martial arts training in 1986 in Shorynji Kempo and rose to the rank of second degree black belt. In 1991, he went on to Shidokan Karate and earned another black belt and the honorable title of All-Japan Champion. He came to the United States in 1996 to be an uchideshi (appren- tice) to Grand Master Saiko Shihan Oyama. During this time as an uchideshi, he won the 1998, 1999, 2001, and 2002 Alabama Governor’s Cup, the 1999 Oyama Karate Open Tournament in New York, and the Yoshukai Karate Tournament four years in a row. Sensei Tetsu completed uchideshi training in 2001, and he is now owner and head instructor at World Oyama Karate in Chelsea. Currently he is a fourth degree black belt. Fees for either program are $55 per month for mem- bers or $65 per month for non-members; we also have first-month packages that offer class fees, uniforms, and other items at a discounted rate. Please contact Fitness One Nineteen at 408-6544 for more information.
