Franca Cipriani

I was born In Umbria, in the beautiful little town named Spoleto,

that I love so much.

I moved to Rome early in my life, when I was eleven, then I studied

in the schools of the capital, the secondary schools on humanities

at the “Liceo Terenzio Mamiani” and the two-year course in the

Department of Chemistry at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.

I am widow, and I have two grown-up sons, with whom I share any

decision or choice: from holidays to the purchase of a house.

My social, politic and institutional engagement has always moved

towards the opportunity of a female growth.

Therefore, it has been characterized for the membership with “Unione Donne Italiane” (UDI), but also for

been interested in finding new female kinds of organization that could better fit with the emerging

challenges in the women’s world during last years.

My field of action has concerned female equality bodies, promoting of a female entrepreneurship, the

gender-balance representation, at all levels, and the relationship with other female context in European

countries.

Broadly speaking, I dealt with all the principal issues related with the female situation, and this has been for

me very interesting and rewarding.

Now I have a great responsibility: National Equality Councillor.

Nominated by the Minister of Labour, I am a public official who guarantees the respect of the equal

opportunities laws, fighting gender discrimination in the workplaces.

In this task, I am supported by a “network” of Equality Councillors which act at local levels: they work in

every administrative level called Regioni and Aree Vaste, so they can act in the respective district.

I can’t forget my cats, Cicciola and Mohamed, a female and a male who always go with me, and to whom I

unsuccessfully tried to teach the roles of a civil cohabitation.

This is my great failure: they always fight.

She holds a Laurea in Contemporary History from the Universita' di Trieste, and a Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University in New York, which she attended on a Fulbright Scholarship. In New York, she worked at the UNITED NATIONS as Assistant to the Undersecretary General for Public Information, after holding an internship at UNICEF Headquarters. In 2009, she founded the Accademia di Gagliato delle NanoScienze (Academy of Gagliato of the Nanosciences, www.nanogagliato.org) of which she is President. The Accademia organizes each summer a unique gathering of global leaders in medicine and STEM, along with a Junior Academy attended by hundreds of children, over almost ten years. This series of events, known as NanoGagliato,

has given international notoriety to the small town of Gagliato that hosts it, and reversed the progressive decline of the little community. As a result, UNESCO mentioned Gagliato and NanoGagliato in its Global Report presented at UN HABITAT III in Quito, October 2016, as an example of a ‘Creative Town’. In an effort to find sustainable ways to financially support the activities of the Accademia, Paola started a for profit enterprise that sells a jewelry Collection she designs with Italian partners Elisa&Janna in Matera (the Nanos Collection at www.nanoshapes.com) that derives inspiration from laboratories photos of the nanoparticles developed by her scientist husband, Mauro Ferrari, world renowned pioneer in the field of Nanomedicine, and currently President and CEO of the Houston Methodist Research Institute. Paola also founded and directed the Houston chapter of Achilles International (www.achillesinternational.org), an organization devoted to promote sports training among people with all kinds of disabilities.
