As Reported in Various NewspapersCommenting on a complaint from a Mr Arthur Purdey about a large gas bill, a spokesman for Northwest Gas said, “We agree that it is rather high for the time of year. It’s possible Mr Purdey has been charged for the gas used up during the explosion that destroyed his house.”Irish police are being handicapped in a search for a stolen van. They cannot issue a description because it is a Special Branch vehicle and they don’t want the public to know what it looks like. The speaker at the WI meeting delighted the audience with her reminiscence of the German POW who was sent to do her garden each week. He was repatriated at the end of 1945.She recalled: “He always seemed such a nice chap, but when the crocuses came up in the middle of our lawn in February 1946, they spelled out ‘Heil Hitler.’”

Tube Train Drivers Announcements“We can’t move off because some idiot has their hand stuck in the door.”“Your delay this evening is caused by the line controller suffering from E&B Syndrome: not knowing his elbow from his backside. I’ll let you know any further information as soon as I am given it.”“Let the passengers off the train FIRST!” (pause) ”Oh go on then, stuff yourselves in like sardines, see if I care...I’m going home...”

• There is little new to report this month as most current items are ‘on-going’. A final decision on the rebuilding of the bus shelter is to be made at the August meeting. The Golden Jubilee daffodil planting scheme is almost finalised with the extent of planting determined by the price of bulbs.

• The Playing Field Pavilion refurbishment is going well with water and drainage now connected. The next step is the provision of hot water.

• Breckland Council should be erecting a ‘No Fly-Tipping’ sign at the lay-by over the old railway bridge.

• The Highway Rangers should be working in the village in late July.• Breckland Councillor Paul Darby reported to us that some work will

shortly be carried out on Brandon Road in Swaffham and on the Watton Road leading out of Swaffham towards Ashill.

Next Full Meeting: Tuesday 2nd August 2011, 7.30pm, Blue Lion Function Room. Agenda to be displayed on the Notice Board. Mick Lee (Parish Clerk)

Take cuttings of tender perennials, such as penstemons, pelargoniums, osteospermums and marguerites, and of alpines.Wisteria can still be given its summer prune.Remove old flowering shoots of rambling roses after they have flowered. They should be cut out completely close to the ground. Tie in any new branches to replace them.Cut down spent raspberry canes.Start planting bulbs for the winter and next spring now.Sow late salad crops of lettuce, radishes, spring onions and rocket.Pinch out the tops of outdoor tomatoes when three trusses of fruit have developed and continue to remove side shoots except on bush tomatoes.Provide support for any heavily laden fruit trees.Lift and dry onions and garlic. It’s not too late to spray for blackspot on roses. However tiresome, keep on top of dead-heading and plucking out weeds as they appear.Make sure birds and other wildlife have enough fresh water and keep those ponds topped up.

The recent revelations that reporters have been hacking into the private mobile phones of ordinary people have caused a political storm of unprecedented proportions; who would have thought that in just a few short days not only would Rupert Murdoch be forced to close his flagship newspaper the News of the World, but politicians from all political parties would be calling for judicial inquiries into both the conduct of newspaper journalists and the Metropolitan police who are accused of sweeping previous allegations ‘under the carpet’? It’s incredible! Quite understandably, the thought that journalists might be listening in to the private, grief stricken moments of murder victims and their families has caused outrage, especially in the case of murdered school girl Milly Dowler, where the deliberate deletion of older messages in order to free up space for newer ones, impeded the police investigation and gave false hope that the poor girl might still be alive. It’s no wonder that the Dowler family’s lawyer, Mark Lewis, has described these events as ‘heinous and despicable’. Let’s hope that out of all the current turmoil, a new standard for investigative journalism and behaviour will be established, one that, yes, understands the need for the ‘freedom of the press’, but respects the privacy of the individual especially in those areas which can’t by any means be considered ‘in the public interest’. Of course what really shocks us in this recent episode is the extent to which things that we naturally thought were private were actually dragged out into the open and made public - but imagine what it would be like if your whole life was made public - your actions, your inner thoughts and motives all pinned up on a wall for public consumption and display! Some things we would be happy to share with others, even be proud of, but others would leave us feeling most uncomfortable and ashamed! Christians acknowledge that although we might like to think that we can keep a secret and keep some things private, it’s simply not possible to do so as far as God is concerned, for as the psalmist writes “O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out

Page 13: Pickenhams' Periodical

and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.” (Psalm 139.1–4) It only takes a moment for us to realise that nothing that we say and do can be hidden from God, and when we compare our lives to His own holy nature we can be left feeling pretty uncomfortable. Fortunately, although God can’t turn a blind eye to sin, he isn’t wicked or manipulative or self centred. Unlike some newspapers, his concern is never to embarrass us, blackmail us or take advantage; but rather to love us, forgive us and help us to aim for higher things, achieving our full potential by means of our faith in Christ and his life, death and subsequent resurrection. The News of the World might be a thing of the past, but fortunately we still have the news for the world and it’s certainly too good a thing to be kept a secret! Yours as ever, Stephen Thorp

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

We had a very good July meeting, our chairman Sheila introduced Mrs Meg Dorling our national WI rep at the AGM meeting - she gave us an interesting report. Meg then introduced Mrs Margaret Furness who talked and demonstrated on the ‘art of homemade sweet making’ - it all looked very nice. Margaret made three different varieties whilst demonstrating. We all sampled some that she had brought along, very morish. Some of us thought we might have a try at making some. This month’s competition was won by Felicity with a choc sponge.

We all had our refreshments and called it a night. Val Wright would like to thank everybody for coming to her strawberry tea and raffle on July 14th - what a success with the amount raised being £117.00 for our WI fund. Well done ladies and the odd gent, thank you all. There will be no meeting in August. Our WI outing to Cambridge is on August 5th. The next WI meeting will be on Thursday September 8th, the speaker will be Linda Kear & Co Windmill Handbell Ringers. Competition will be ‘an ornamental bell’. VW

The Funeral o f Queen Caro l in eQueen Caroline died on the evening of 7th August 1821. There were immediate problems over her funeral; she had expressed a wish to be buried in Germany and to have engraved on her coffin ‘ Caroline of Brunswich, the injured Queen of England’ to which the King took great exception. He proposed that her body should be taken down river, without any ceremony, on a state barge where a warship would be waiting to convey it to the Continent. The Admiralty, however, had no suitable vessel available so the authorities decided instead to go to the Port of Harwich and use the regular service. To get there, central London and the City was to be avoided to prevent any public demonstration. The whole affair was hopelessly bungled. A mob forced the procession to turn down Tottenham Court Road and follow a route to Temple Bar where the Lord Mayor made a speech. Throughout the journey there were disturbances and rioting with one man being killed.King George celebrated, after five days of mourning, with a visit to Ireland. He dressed in a uniform he had designed for himself as a Field Marshall. It was a full State occasion which the Irish loved. It was a great success only spoilt by a bad storm on the way back which made His Majesty very seasick. This was followed by his one and only visit to the Continent which lasted seven weeks and included a visit to the battlefield of Waterloo with Wellington as a guide. He also did some hunting but was very bored until the final week when he met the Austrian Chancellor, Prince Metternich, who had been invited by Robert Stewart, the Marquess of Londonderry, the English Prime Minister.

Page 17: Pickenhams' Periodical

Also invited was Princess Dorothea Lieven, a lady much admired by King George. She was Metternick’s mistress and, as her husband was on a mission to Russia at this time, she was free to be able to spread her favours. However, any hopes George may have had were ruined when he fell victim to a bad attack of gout. By the middle of June 1822 he had recovered and was prevailed upon to visit Scotland. After several scenes of tears and tantrums, he agreed. It was a great success, he really enjoyed himself and dressed appropriately in full Highland uniform, Stuart tartan, with flesh coloured tights as a compromise between local practice and royal decencies. The King returned from Scotland in the autumn of 1822 and was greeted home by a major crisis. The Prime Minister, Lord Londonderry, worn out by the burdens of office, committed suicide by cutting his throat with a penknife.
