Audobon Book Auction cont. pg 8

LONDON – It’s quite a nestegg. John James Audubon’s“Birds of America,” a rare blendof art, natural history andcraftsmanship, fetched morethan $10 million at auction onTuesday, making it the world’smost expensive published book.

With its 435 hand-coloredillustrations of birds drawn tosize, the volume is one of the bestpreserved editions of Audubon’s19th-century masterpiece. Thesale at Sotheby’s auction househad been anticipated for monthsby wealthy collectors.

The book sold for$10,270,000 (6.5 millionpounds) to an anonymouscollector bidding by telephone,

the auction house said.Because each picture is so

valuable, there have been fearsthe volume will be broken up andsold as separate works of art. However, experts believe that’sunlikely. The tome is probablymore valuable intact. Andcollectors hold Audubon in suchreverence that the notion ofripping apart a perfect copy wouldbe akin to sacrilege.

“Audubon’s ‘Birds’ holds aspecial place in the rare bookmarket,” said Heather O’Donnell,a specialist with Bauman RareBooks in New York. “The book isa major original contribution tothe study of natural history in theNew World.”

“It’ s also oneof the mostvisually stunningbooks in thehistory of print:The scale of theimages, theoriginality ofe a c hcomposition, thebrilliance of thehand coloring.”

Then there’sthe wow factor.

“No one can rival John JamesAudubon for frontier glamour,”O’Donnell said. “The story of hislonely journey through theAmerican wilderness and hisstruggle to record what he sawthere gives the ‘Birds’ aresonance that no other book canmatch.”

Part naturalist and part artist,Audubon possessed an unequaledability to observe, catalog andpaint the birds he observed in thewild. Experts say his book, originally published in 1827, isunmatched in its beauty and isalso of considerable scientific

hunter turned maneating tigerhunter, or some obscure tradi-tional martial arts book that wastranslated to English.

Oh yes, an astute person canactually tell quite a bit about aperson just from browsing theirbookshelves.

Now, the equivalent is what arethe favorite bookmarkedwebsites on people’s computersand phones.

Just know that there is a wholebreed of people who have grownfond of their books, whetherbrand spanking new novels or rareantique books.

And we can’t let the opportu-nity slip by without pitching aperfect Holiday Gift for thatsomeone who is hard to buy for.Consider what that person likesor enjoys, then find a bookthey’ll love on the subject.

value, justifying its stratosphericprice tag.

Pom Harrington, owner of thePeter Harrington rare book firmin London, said it has been 10years since the last completeedition of “Birds of America”was auctioned, going for a then-record $8.8 million.

He said it is unusual to find acopy not in a museum ora c a d e m i cinstitution.

“If you want tobuy an example ofa rare work of art, this is one of thebest,” he said. “Itis valuable in itsartistic naturebecause it is sowell drawn.”

He said otherhistoric books —such as anexcellent exampleof a GutenbergBible — would

likely be valued even higher ifthey came up for sale.

Harrington estimated that acomplete Gutenberg Bible ingood condition would probablysell for between $30 million and$50 million, but none has beensold in more than 30 years. Inrecent years, he said, a completeFirst Folio of Shakespeare’sworks sold at auction for about$5.6 million while a Chaucer

c o l l e c t i o nsold for morethan $4million.

“ T h a t ’ sgetting closeto Audubon,”he said.

While theA u d u b o nvolume holdsthe record fora publishedbook, a 72-page notebookof Leonardoda Vinci’ s

handwritten notes andillustrations went for even more.Known as the Leicester Codex, the collection was bought by BillGates in 1994 for $31 million.

Also on the block Tuesday wasa Shakespeare First Folio from1623 that fetched $2.05 million(1.3 million pounds).

Sotheby’s books expert DavidGoldthorpe said the Audubon andShakespeare volumes represent“the twin peaks of bookcollecting.” Both came from theestate of the 2nd Baron Hesketh,a collector who died in 1955.

The “Birds of America” plateswere printed in black and whiteand then hand-colored by “thebest artists of the time,”Harrington said. The collection, made from engravings ofAudubon’s watercolors, measures more than 3 feet by 2feet (90 centimeters by 60centimeters) because Audubonwanted to paint the birds life size.

The size of the illustrationsmakes them extremely valuableas stand-alone pieces of art, leaving the complete editionvulnerable to being broken up sothe prints can be sold one by one.Harrington said the wild turkeydepicted in the first big plate ofthe book can be sold for$200,000.

But Mark Ghahramani, a rarebook specialist at ClassicBindings in London, said it isunlikely this “Birds of America”will be divided up.

“There are very few copies leftof the entire book, so I wouldthink that whoever bought it at theauction would be quite interestedin keeping it whole,” he said.“Anything to do with American

represents a unique figure inAmerican history — aRenaissance man with shades ofHuckleberry Finn.Like Mark Twain’sfictional character,Audubon made anepic voyage downthe mightyMississippi — butwith a scientist’sinquisitive nature.
