Conductor’s  Welcome—Cheryl  Woldseth  Lions,  elephants,  wolves...  Yukon,  Amazon,  Africa...  adventure  by  tall  ship,  caravan,  or  even  dreaming!  With  the  theme  "Musical  Safari,"  today’s  family-friendly  outdoor  concert  will  enchant  with  music  depicting  animals,  locations,  and  adventure.

While   our   themes   are   chosen   from   band   and   audience   submissions,   the   concert’s   content   is   all   up   to  me.    And  I  sure  do  have  a  great  time,  creating  a  show  based  on  these  crazy  theme  titles.    So  I  brainstorm,  bounce  ideas  off  many  other  people,  try  things  out,  and  see  what  happens.    I  am  always  impressed  that  the  band  musicians  are  willing  to  try  any  unusual  thing  I  ask:    trunks  on  trombones,  clarinets  for  seagull  calls,  off-stage  trumpets,  a  tuba  low  note  play-off,  and  more.    Even  the  Band  Hands  (who  are  organizing  the  raffles,  “Carnival  of  the  Animals”  artwork,  and  Band  Store)  get  to  wear  animal  costumes!    And  thanks  also   to  Pleasant  Valley  Elementary  School   (Penn  Valley)   for   loaning  us   the  costumes   from   their   recent  production  of  “The  Lion  King  Jr.”      Don’t  forget  to  join  our  Fan  Email  list  or  follow  the  Nevada  County  Concert  Band  on  Facebook.    I  post  pre-view  news,  behind-the-scenes  pictures  and  stories,  and  announcements  about  how   to  participate   in  up-coming  concerts  (either  as  an  audience  member  or  a  Band  Hand).      As  always,  our  web  page  has  our  full  concert  schedule,  plus  links  to  after-concert  photos.    New  this  year,  our  band’s  many  ensembles  will  per-form  at  the  7/31  North  Star  House  event,  and  we’ve  added  a  fourth  picnic  pops  concert  (also  free  to  the  public)  on  9/11  in  Alta  Sierra.

Our  Conductor  Cheryl   (Sutton,   Baker)   Woldseth   has   a   Bachelors   of   Music   degree   in  Church  Music   from  Westminster  Choir  College   (Princeton,  NJ),  sings,  and  plays  many  instruments.    In  addition  to  conducting  the  Nevada  County  Con-cert   Band,   she   performs/records/tours   with   Sonos   Handbell   Ensemble,  teaches  music   at   several   local   schools,   performs  with   the  Raspberry   Jam  Band   and   Blended  Metal   Saxophones,   and   has   served   several   non-profit  music  organizations.    She  is  a  member  of  the  music  fraternity  Sigma  Alpha  Iota,   and  owns   the  music  publishing  company  Bronze:FX.    Cheryl   lives   in  Grass  Valley,  CA.

Band  Member  Spotlight—Janet  Shelley

Instruments:  Flute,  Piccolo,  Piano

I  love  music!    My  first  lessons  were  on  piano  at  age  7,  and  by  age  10  I  be-gan   the   flute.       My   wonderful   orchestra   teacher   Sister   Teresa   for   Holy  Names   High   School   (Oakland,   CA)   and   my   flute   teacher   John   Darasch  steered  me  toward  a  life  in  music.    But  I  was  a  bit  of  a  troublemaker,  and  didn’t  get  along  well  with  the  nuns.    My  musical  education  at  UC  Berkeley  was   interrupted   by  marriage,   followed   by   a  move   to  Germany   and   three  children.    Returning  to  the  SF/Oakland  area,  I  took  my  kids  to  Holy  Names  College   for  music   lessons,  and   they   tried  their  best  on  harp,  guitar,   trum-pet,  piano   (none  of   it   stuck),  but   I   returned   to   flute   and  piano   in   their   or-chestra.    Being  just  a  few  credits  short,  the  college  offered  to  complete  my  degree  if  I  would  perform  a  recital.    The  thought  made  me  want  to  die!    So  they  granted  me  an  honorary  teaching  degree  anyway,  and  I  taught  piano

for  16  years.      My  kids  are  my  biggest  fans,  but  I’m  still  the  only  musical  one  in  my  family.      However,  my  daughter  and  I  once  had  parts  in  the  Nutcracker,  and  I  was  the  little  mouse  that  cried.

And  I  still  love  music  –  joy,  satisfaction,  and  many  good  friends.    Thirty  years  later,  I  took  flute  lessons  from  Gene  Gaddini,  also  joining  the  Nevada  County  Concert  Band  (Gaddini  was  conductor  1989-1993).    Moving  to  central  Cali-fornia,  I  joined  the  Fresno  Community  Concert  Band  and  the  Clovis  Community  Band.    Returning  in  2007,  I  rejoined  the  NCCBand.    While  talking  with  fellow  NCCBand  flute  player  Alice  Margraf,  I  discovered  that  we  are  distantly  re-lated.    Small  world!    And  I  play  flute  for  my  church  choir  at  St.  Patrick’s  Catholic  Church,  and  love  card  games  and  doing  Tai  Chi.

Janet’s  friends  say  that  she's  a  sweet  and  wonderful  lady  filled  with  love,  laughter,  quiet  strength,  and  a  little  bit  of  mischief.      Janet  brightens  your  day  just  by  being  there!
