1. A number may appear just once in each row or column. Eliminaterepeat numbers by darkening cells. (see example)
2. Darkened cells must never be adjacent in a row or column.3. Unmarked cells must create a single continuous area, undivided by
darkened cells.4. Every time you darken a cell, you can automatically circle its verti-
cal and horizontal neighbours, whichmeans they cannot be eliminated.
5. Any cell "sandwiched" between neighbours of the same val-ue can be circled. (e.g. )
6. A "triple" is a special case of sandwich.Circle the centre cells, and darken theends.(e.g. )

Fill in the grid so that every horizontal row, every verticalcolumn and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1-9, withoutrepeating the numbers in the same row, column or box.Youcan’t change the digits already given in the grid. Everypuzzle has one solution.
RulesConnect adjacent dotswith vertical or horizontallines, creating a singleloop (Fig A).Crossovers or branchesare not allowed (As shownby dotted lines in Fig B).Numbers in the puzzle in-dicate the number of linesthat should surround it,while empty cells may besurrounded by any num-ber of lines. You can’t draw linesaround zeroes. Each puzzle has just oneunique solution.
How to begin: Example (FigA) - Begin with the zero next to3.Since no lines can be drawnaround zero, mark crossesaround it, as shown. Now thereis a cross in one space around 3.So we knowthe three lines of 3 can only be drawn in theremaining three spaces.Next, these lines canonly be extended in one direction each.Con-tinue,using the same logic.Hints: Keep eliminating possibilities bymarking crosses in spaces between dotswhere a line isn’t possible, i.e., if you havealready completed required lines or wherea line extension may create a branch or cause a deadend (Fig B)

In the past year, Jawaharlal Nehru Uni-versity has been tangled in contro-versy over the subject of ‘national-
ism’ and its place on its campus. Fromthe sedition row to alleged ‘anti-nation-al slogans’, nationalism has been at thecentre of a raging debate in and aboutJNU. But last week, to show that their“students are not anti-national”, JNU be-came the first university in the countryto create a Wall Of Heroes, as part of theHRD Ministry’s Vidya Veerta Abhiyan. The wall, which displays photos of 21Param Vir Chakra recipients, has beenset up at the convention hall. At its re-cent inauguration, Indian Army veter-ans shared stories of their heroic deedsand experiences with students.
JNU VC M Jagadesh Kumar said that“this is the kind of nationalism that iswelcome at the university”. Professorsattending the event also said that the WallOf Heroes was an important way for theuniversity “to show that its students arenot anti-national – they too have patri-otic feelings for the country”.SIMPLY BEING PEACEFUL AND TOLERANT NOT ENOUGH:JNU VCTalking about the wall, JNU VC M Ja-gadesh Kumar said, “JNU’s associationwith our soldiers is an honour for us.This is the real nationalist JNU and wewould like to have more such pro-grammes at the university. Today, if weare able to sit in our laboratories andstudy, if students can discuss and debate
peacefully, it is only because of their sac-rifices. If we are simply peaceful and tol-erant, that is not enough, because thereare forces both from outside the countryand inside that are trying to destabilizethe country. It is in this context that oursoldiers play a key role in ensuring thesafety of the country.”
Kumar also thanked former BJP MPTarun Vijay for making the photographsavailable to the university and asked stu-dents to click pictures with the wall andshare them on social media.INDIA IS AN IDEA WORTH LIVING FOR: TARUN VIJAYAfter many of the Army veterans toldstudents that soldiers believe that Indiais an idea worth dying for, Tarun Vijaysaid, “India is an idea worth living for, solet enemies die now.” He added, “JNU haschosen the best location to set up the Wallof Heroes. Thousands of people fromacross the world come to this universityand they will see this wall which will re-mind them of great sacrifices.”
After the national anthem was played, students and teachers raised slogans of“vande mataram” and “Bharat mata kijai”. The Army veterans too appreciat-ed the step by JNU. “You never get overit (your war experiences),”said Col (Retd)AK Tara, as he shared stories from the1971 war and the significance of the In-dian Army during any crisis. They alsocalled upon the students to join the Indi-an Army.
