Get involved in your child’s education
Research shows parent involvement positively affects student success. Becoming more involved brings many benefits. You will get to know teachers, the principal and other parents better. You will be able to share your talents, experiences and ideas. You will inspire youth—and be inspired by them. You will show your child how much you value education. You will gain insights that can help you to boost your child's learning. And you could develop skills and knowledge that can help you in your own career. There are many ways to be involved. Attending the Peel District School Board's annual parent conference on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Rick Hansen Secondary School, volunteering at your child's school, talking to your teen about their school day and reading with your child at night are all forms of parent involvement. Visit www.peelschools.org/parents/involved to learn more.

Dear Somerset Families,
Everyone has settled in nicely after our
reorganization day late in September. Somerset
enrollment increased this year and we were able to
create another grade 1/2 which is now being taught by
Ms. Pitman. Thank you to all the staff, parents and
students for your patience and understanding during this
process. We welcome our new teacher Ms Prabhakar
who will be teaching our grade 2/3. A warm welcome
to Ms Baetz our teacher librarian and primary planning
time teacher.
A reminder to families that picture day has moved from
October 7th to October 27th so please mark your
calendars accordingly.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving Day long weekend!

Monday October 5, 2014
Since 1994, parents and students from around the world have
celebrated World Teacher Appreciation Day to commemorate
the work of teachers and their contributions to society. During
the week of October 5th, take the time to let your child's teacher
know he or she is truly appreciated. Thank your child's teacher
and let them know they are making a difference.
Picture Day Rescheduled for
Oct. 27th Our picture day that was originally
scheduled for October 7th has been
rescheduled to October 27th.
October is International Walk to School Month Walking to school helps out the environment. Eliminating just four
short trips per week can reduce emissions by up to 100 kg of carbon
dioxide per year. Families that participate in active travel to school
can prevent almost 1,000 kg of carbon dioxide per year and save
money in fuel costs as well. Also, when more children walk to
school and fewer parents drive their children, the areas near school
zones become safer for pedestrians.
That is why our school will be participating in
International Walk to School Month on October
8. On that day—and throughout the month, if you
can—walk, bike, blade, scooter, skip or hop to
school….but please don’t drive!

How to prevent litter at school Here are some tips for reducing waste at school:
Provide your child with a litter-less lunch which could
contain:
· refillable water bottle
· returnable, reusable or refillable drink containers
instead of plastic bottles and cans
· snacks and sandwiches stored in plastic containers
· fruit that requires no wrap such as bananas, apples,
oranges
Courtesy Seating
The Bus Committee will be considering
courtesy seat applications on Oct. 7th. For students
who have been given courtesy seats they will become
available the week of Oct. 13th. Please remember that
there are limited spaces and many items to take into
consideration when determining courtesy seating.
School Parking Lot
Please do not use the parking lot in the
morning before school. We have limited
space and need to ensure all staff can find a parking
space. Please use side streets in the neighbourhood to
park your car and walk your child to school.
Please note that between 8:45 and 9:00 a.m. and again
between 3:20 and 3:35 p.m. the parking lot is closed.
Our buses are dropping off students and picking up
students at that time. We thank you in advance for
your cooperation, as student safety is always our
number one priority!
Parent tip sheets on a variety of topics (e.g. math,
literacy, science, social skill development) are available on the Peel board’s website at www.peelschools.org/parents/helpyourchild and at www.peelschools.org/parents/literacyconference/workshops. Of course, you can also speak with your child’s teacher(s) about how you can help support your child’s learning at home.

• Is there any other way you could…?
• Why did you…?
• How did you…?
Now It’s Your Turn …..
At Somerset Drive Public School, we are always interested in feedback from our community. You
are invited to cut out this slip and let us know how we are doing. We welcome all comments
whether they be expressions of praise or suggestions for improvement. Each month we will have a
random draw to award small prizes to a few of those who have returned this form.

As part of the Peel District
School Board’s initiative to
support 21st century learning,
students are invited to bring
their own digital devices to
school for learning purposes.
When students bring their
devices to school it gives
them access to helpful online
tools, the world wide web,
they can create multi-media
projects and use interactive
curriculum based tools.
