Moored opposite the Houses of Parliament, we watched ‘Gloriana’ glide along the River Thames on June 3rd together with the enormous variety of large and small boats accompanying Her Majesty’s Royal Barge. We were able to join the Pageant towards the end of the cavalcade through Westminster Bridge and beyond to the Tower of London. It was a truly amazing experience, every boat full of smiling faces, every bridge packed full of people waving and cheering and all along the embankments too. The grey skies, cold and rain couldn’t damp spirits or enthusiasm for flag waving as was very evident too in the Piddle Valley Jubilee Celebrations with so many events to celebrate Her Majesty’s 60 year reign. We have tried to include as many photographs as possible, but there are many more on www.piddlevalley.info.

The deadline for Young Photographers to enter our competition is 13th July, so whatever the weather, please get busy with your cameras.

AVENUE OF CHAMPIONS After the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and Euro 2012, we are now looking forward to the Olympics and Paralympics which begin on the 27th July. To mark the Games, our cathedral at Salisbury is hosting an exhibition by the contemporary sculptor, Ben Dearnley, entitled Avenue of Champions. Ben has an early connection with Salisbury since he was born in The Close in 1964 when his father, Dr Christopher Dearnley, was organist at the cathedral before he moved to St Paul’s cathedral. Ben now lives in Bath and in May, to coincide with the Olympic torch coming to Bath, he unveiled a new commissioned work in his home city - a twice life size torso of five times Olympian and six times world swimming champion, Mark Foster, carved out of a block of Bath stone.

The Avenue of Champions pieces focus on the ‘power zones’ of twelve of some of the United Kingdom’s past and current Olympic and Paralympic champions. They are sculpted in bronze and in marble. Each work is a collaboration with the athlete as Ben gained an understanding of their body's action so that he could capture the 'moment' critical to their particular sport in a fragmented form. Among the athletes depicted are a rower, a wheelchair basketball player, a fencer, a gymnast, a diver and a dressage rider. The pieces will be exhibited in the cathedral’s cloisters where you will be able to walk through the ‘avenue’ viewing each sculpted athlete as you go.

The United Nations has long recognised the potential of sport to advance the global causes of peace, development and human rights. The exhibition celebrates this power and also the ability of human beings to make the most of their God-given potential in the bodies and talents that they have. It runs from the 23rd June to the 16th September and should be well worth a visit as part of our Olympic experience.

    Hilton Sings!

Despite being one of the wettest days in months, an enthusiastic band of singers, organists, musicians and cake makers ensured that Hilton Sings! was a huge success raising an amazing total of over £1275 to support the church. At one point there were 105 people in the church enjoying a happy and relaxing time together. Special thanks are due to the children and their music teachers from St Marys Middle School, Puddletown who sang and played beautifully for us. For all those who contributed to the success and enjoyment of the day a very big Thank You! Hilton PCC

  • News from the valley villages ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Alton Pancras

AP Our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration in Sally Dangerfield’s paddock mirrored HM’s, torrential rain. Bill Davey had cleared the Piddle for the river pageant but the event was reduced to the street-party-in-a-tent attended by 45% of the village population. HM’s equerry Colonel Trevis presided, leading the loyal toast and the National Anthem and our own matriarch Marion Wightman ceremonially cut the magnificent cake made by Sue Howell. The weather literally brought us all closer!

AP At the time of going to press, final timings for Rachel Olley’s Olympic flame-bearing along the A350 near Iwerne Minster between Shaftesbury and Blandford on the morning of 13 July were not to hand but she will become the owner of the torch and white uniform so will be in much demand for public appearances, fete openings etc.

AP Having had to say farewell to two popular gamekeepers Nick and Tom, Holcombe Mead now welcomes Steve and Hayley Colson and children Finlay and Isla, arrived from East Knoyle via Glanvilles Wootton.

AP The Easter Sunday church collection raised £187.56 for the Ducks and Drakes 18-30 Trust, set up by Andrew Drake and friends in Buckland Newton to raise awareness of bowel cancer in young people.

AP This year is the 10th anniversary of the unveiling of our Millennium Seat ! It was delayed due to foot-and-mouth. The names of the villagers at the time who consented to have their names inscribed have weathered brilliantly. A few residents admit to never having visited it, but it is only a short climb, there’s a good view – and there is somewhere to sit !

Colin Dean [email protected] Alton Pancras Fete May 26th was a glorious sunny day with a fresh breeze and the Fete in the walled garden of the Manor with receipts of £2743, came close to the all time record. Of this one quarter go to Julia's House Children's Hospice, one quarter to the Alton Pancras village project (to be announced) and one half to the church restoration fund. Thanks to all – the stallholders, organisers and judges for their hard work and the public for their generosity. Support from local trades with such substantial contributions to the silent auction and raffle was, in these bleak economic moments, a very real symptom of decency. It was interesting to note that the more secular financial purpose of the fete had no apparent impact on it's popularity. It was a great day and any comments, criticisms or recommendations to the fete co-ordinator please!

    Piddlehinton Church Fete

This year’s Piddlehinton Church Fete will be on 21st July and will be held at The Old Rectory by kind permission of Sandy and Sarah Milne. The fete will open at 2.00 pm. Entertainment will be provided by The Yetminster Irish Dancers, Punch and Judy shows and a Chef demonstration. The Bouncy Castle and the Slide that proved so popular with children last year will again be on site together with many stalls selling goods and providing games with prizes. A Silent Auction will also be held with at least ten items to be bid for. None of the above would be possible without the help of a lot of people not just during the event but also setting everything up and clearing up afterwards. If you can help with the setting up on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, or with clearing up on Sunday morning or in any other way please contact

John Ottaway / 01305 848501 / [email protected] Diamond Jubilee Celebration Easter Egg Hunt & Afternoon Tea On Easter Sunday, Mike and Linda Lines organised an Easter Egg Hunt around the village of Piddlehinton and afternoon teas were served by Trustees of the Millennium Green to help raise funds for the Diamond Jubilee Celebration. This proved to be a most enjoyable and successful afternoon and I would like to thank all who took part and helped to raise a very commendable £193.60 for the event.

  • Monday 4th June ‘Picnic on the Millennium Green’ How lucky we were to choose the one dry day of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations for our “Picnic on the Green”. It was a truly wonderful sight to see so many extended families and local villagers (over a hundred and fifty) all coming together to celebrate this special event on our beautiful open space. Chris Groves on guitar and Brian on drums played many favourite songs helping to set the scene and create a festive mood for the picnic. The smell of smoky barbecues wafted across the Green and beautifully decorated tables were laid with exciting dishes of Coronation Chicken, Union Jack fruit gateaux and red, white and blue iced cakes. While adults were sipping a refreshing Pimms the children enjoyed The Treasure Hunt, searching for jewels hidden around the Green. Races for all ages was a highlight; stamina and strength were displayed in the parent and child sack race, eggs splattered and rolled everywhere in the egg and spoon and the three legged, displaying somewhat limited skill, caused great hilarity. The sports culminated in the Jubilee Team Race where over fifty people had great fun passing a hat and flag down the lines. Prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners and this was followed by the Presentation of special Jubilee Medals to all the children who had come to the Picnic.

The final event of the afternoon was the planting of the Diamond Jubilee Tree by Susan Belgrave who was one of the founding Trustees of the Millennium Green. It was a very memorable afternoon, a special celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which I am sure will be remembered by the village for many years to come. Hog Roast and Barn Dance Piddlehinton Village Hall What a fantastic evening ! After a delicious hog roast local villagers ‘let their hair down’ and were sartorially unrecognisable dancing the night away to the tunes of the 50s and 60s in ‘Flower Power hippy attire’. Great fun was had by all and the evening concluded with the singing “Land of Hope and Glory’.

Janet Keen NGS at Ivy House Garden, Piddletrenthide 2012 With tables and chairs stacked away, tablecloths laundered and stored and the ‘Garden Open Today’ signs stowed, it’s time to say a big thank you to all the kind folk who helped us at our five ‘openings’ of 2012. To those manning (or should that be womaning?) the tea table, Betty, Prue, Janet, Sue & Mary, we say a very big thank you and to those stalwarts of Ticket Table & Plant Stall, Jane and John Preston, we are eternally grateful for your patience and tenacity, despite the dreary weather we faced on more occasions than usual.

And to all the friends, family, holiday makers and regular garden visitors, we were delighted to see you all and do come again, in 2013!

P Flowers round the Fingerpost Residents have voted by large majority to plan the surrounding triangle outside the Brace of Pheasants with a wild flower and meadow grass mix. The ground will be prepared during the summer for bulbs, short growing grasses and wild flower seed to be sown in the autumn. John Browning P Jubilee Celebration Party & Games - Monday 4th June

Plush residents with their family and friends celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the field opposite The Brace of Pheasants. The village and villagers were festooned in red white and blue. The sun shone as everyone sat down to a cold buffet and Jubilee quiz. Partygoers listened to a selection of music from the last 60 years, courtesy of Plush’s own DJ Kevin Scott – some drawn from the 60 years, some pure nostalgia and of course ‘God Save the Queen’. There were decorated biscuits and make a crown competitions and a good time was had by all. With thanks to everyone who helped make it such an excellent event - to Peter and Jo for collecting all the tables and chairs, and for all the setting up, clearing away, catering and providing entertainment.

In a nod to the upcoming Games, the afternoon included the Plush Olympics. Excited children and quite a few competitive adults took turns throwing hula hoops in the shape of the Olympic rings, performing shotput manoeuvres on ping pong balls, hitting shuttlecocks into buckets, running an egg and spoon race, and throwing a Brace of Pheasants (rubber chickens tied together). The sight of rubber chickens twirling through the air across Jock’s Field was a Monty Pythonesque moment not to be forgotten! London cannot possibly compete !

  • Garden Open Days for the NGS, 2012, at Butts Cottage, Plush We were hoping for 3 days of sunshine this year to make up for the deluge we endured in June 2011, but our fortunes were mixed. It was a wet start in April but 30 hardy souls came along to enjoy the daffodils, tulips, erythroniums, pansies and other spring flowers. By mid-May we had experienced extreme cold, drought and exceptional heat, confusing the flowers, some of which came out too early while others hung back. Nevertheless, although the day was chilly, the sun shone and we were pleased to welcome 85 visitors. One always expects June to be the most rewarding month and in spite of the damp and drizzly day, our marsh-orchids, though fewer in number than in past years, made a fine show amongst the ox-eye daisies, the roses and sweet rocket smelled wonderful, fruit and vegetables were in good heart and our unusual pink-and-cream weigela versicolour proved popular on the plant-stall as well as in the garden - we must take even more cuttings this year !

Over the three openings, we made just over £823 to hand over to the NGS charities. These include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices and 8 others. So, many thanks to all who made delicious cakes, served the teas, sold the plants, parked the cars, sold the tickets and gave our visitors such a cheerful welcome. Also, thanks to all who visited the garden and helped us raise money for such worthwhile causes. Keep your fingers crossed for better weather next year!

  • Piddletrenthide Flood Alleviation Scheme

The geology of the Piddle Valley is prone to high water tables during prolonged wet periods causing a large number of properties within Piddletrenthide to have suffered significant flooding problems. Groundwater springs lead to flooded highways and gardens, and also inundates the foul sewerage system. A concerted effort has already been made by authorities to address these problems including : • land drainage improvements (District Council and Environment Agency) • highway drainage improvements (County Council) • sealing of public sewers to minimise ground water infiltration (Wessex Water)

The public sewerage system is only designed to take foul flows and not groundwater or land drainage. Should groundwater ingress continue Wessex Water will take appropriate action in conjunction with the Environmental Health Office to remove such inflow but residents can help to protect the environment : • do not connect any land drainage to the public sewerage system • do not allow any groundwater to enter either the public or private sewers • do not put cooking oil, fat or grease down the sink or drain • ‘bag and bin’ ie disposable nappies, wet wipes, female hygiene products etc

    Go for Gold this summer

Dorset Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) are encouraging children and their parents to think about fire safety in their home. ‘Go for Gold’ inspires young people to see how fire safe their homes are by working to achieve a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate. To achieve a Bronze certificate, households need to have a working smoke alarm; to achieve a Silver certificate, a working smoke alarm and well practised escape plan. Young people can sign up for a FREE Home Safety Check or self-assessment pack on our website and when they do, they will receive an exclusive Gold certificate. Youngsters can collect as many Gold certificates as they like, by referring their grandparents, aunts, uncles and other family and friends - with their permission of course !

DFRS provide free Home Safety advice. A member of DFRS staff will visit your home and ensure each premises has the correct number of working smoke alarms, fitting or replacing them free of charge if needed, pointing out any potential risks and offering advice as to how they can be minimised. Visits are tailored to the person, their home and their own unique circumstances.

To take up the challenge to ‘Go For Gold’ and apply for a FREE home safety check and the opportunity to achieve a Gold certificate today, contact us on 01305 252600 or visit www.dorsetfire.gov.uk If you know of someone who may be vulnerable and would benefit from a visit, please get their permission and contact us on their behalf to arrange an appointment.

  • Police

There appears to have been an increase in crime affecting our area including theft of fence battery, tractor weights, spotlights, and diesel from farms and from unattended motor vehicles. Please promptly report all suspicious incidents to help reduce the risks of crimes occurring and increase the chances of apprehending the criminal.

This summer the Dorset population is likely to be increased by visitors on holiday and for the Olympic sailing events at Weymouth and Portland. Many will be out and about, parking at various beauty spots, parks, walks etc so it is a good time to just be reminded of a few precautions :

    • Ensure vehicles are securely locked, leaving nothing on display • Remove all your possessions whilst vehicles are unattended • Use a mechanical immobilizer or steering lock if no immobilizer • Locking wheel nuts can prevent your wheels from being stolen • A professionally installed alarm can be effective in deterring thieves

    And when at home :

    • Ensure doors and windows are locked when leaving home • Even when you are at home, do not leave valuable or important items

on show when you have windows and doors left open • Beware bogus callers, check identities of anyone coming to your door.

Do not let anyone into your home that you are unhappy about; if you are still worried refuse them entry and if you feel safer doing so phone 101 for Dorset Police and ask for advice.

  • Girlguiding in the Piddle Valley

Thank you Piddle Valley News and Views! As an outcome of the article about Piddlehinton Brownies in the last edition we have a volunteer to take over as BROWN OWL from Kerry Moore when she stands down at the end of this term.

Shelley Poole, who moved to Piddlehinton earlier this year, saw the request and remembering the pleasure she had as a girl in both Brownies and Guides and later as Guiding Young Leader, decided to offer her services. She will take over after the summer holidays and the first meeting of the new term will be on Wednesday 12th September at Piddlehinton Village Hall.

Shelley will be looking for helpers at the weekly meetings for girls aged 7 to 10 years, so if you would like to know more, please contact myself (348286) or Shelley direct (01305 753879). PLEASE do think about how you might get involved – you will have fun! Younger girls, aged 5 to 7 years, will be welcomed at Rainbows who also meet on a Wednesday at Piddlehinton Village Hall. Please contact Sarah Goddard (345413).

Lastly, I am sure there are many parents and girls who want to join with me in saying a big thank you to Kerry Moore, Claire Hudson and Di Lawrence for all they have done for The Brownies of the Piddle Valley over the last 2 years.

    The Twinning Association

    twinned with Longueville, Normandy

The visit from our French friends in mid-May was a great success despite patches of bad weather ! 21 Longuevillais aged between 12 and 73 spent two days seeing the sights of London before driving down for their long weekend in the Piddle Valley. We entertained them with a skittles evening, local visits including Salisbury Cathedral, the Fleet Air Arm Museum and Lytes Cary and ended with a wonderful dinner and concert in the Memorial Hall. As gifts, the French brought with them a striking watercolour of Longueville village centre, with church and red telephone box …. and seven bottles of champagne !

The French were delighted with their stay and we are now planning next year’s visit to Normandy to celebrate our 20th anniversary together.

Huge thanks to all our members, especially the host families who were so generous and hospitable….. and to Stuart and Heather at the Thimble, who have continued to provide us with a home from home for the Twinning, to Becky Green and her team, who prepared a fantastic dinner and to Dave Bowen, Mike Botterill and Magdalena Atkinson, who gave us a wonderful concert of French songs as a finale to the weekend.

  • Parish + District Council ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Piddle Valley Parish Council Meetings The Piddle Valley Parish Council meets in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall, normally on the last Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm. Meetings start with a “Democratic half-hour”, during which any local resident may personally raise direct to the Council any matter that affects the Valley community. So, if you have something important to say, please either contact your local Parish Councillor or raise it during the start of the next meeting.

Next meetings scheduled are: 31 July and 25 September (No August meeting)

PARKING by the School, by Jaspers and at Piddlehinton There has been concern raised about the manner and the number of vehicles parking close to the school at start and end of their day. These are generally parents dropping off or collecting their children, but the congestion created, particularly at the entrance to Northover Close, is a significant safety hazard. It is appreciated that parents have safety concerns for their children, but with the level of traffic also using the valley road at those times, this additional and crowded parking is actually increasing the very dangers that parents are seeking to minimise. If it is not possible to walk your child to school, can you please park well away from the school entrance and with consideration for the residents and other road users.

Highways are also looking at the problems caused by the number of vehicles parking during the day between the Old School and Jaspers, where sight lines along the road are limited and problems with the single lane traffic meeting are an issue. The Police have also been asked to review the issue of parking close to junctions, particularly at Piddlehinton Cross.

FIRST RESPONDERS Following a well attended demonstration by St John’s Ambulance service before the last Parish Council meeting, interest has been expressed in setting up of a First Responder scheme in the valley to provide emergency medical support to victims of cardiac arrest pending the arrival of an ambulance. Training and partial funding are available, but in order to proceed it must first be established that there is a sufficient number of volunteers both willing and able to reliably commit to being “on call” on a rota basis, to maintain a continuous service over a significant period of time. If you wish to become involved in such a scheme, please contact Terry Cowley on 01300 348247.

FLY TIPPING The Parish Council has been asked to investigate the problem of people dumping garden waste in public areas, particularly along the path from Smiths Lane to Egypt in Piddletrenthide. There are an increasing number of dead shrubs, piles of hedge trimmings etcetera at the Smiths Lane end and at Egypt a large compost heap is developing. The extent of the rubbish is spreading and quite unsightly. Can we please remind everyone that not only is fly tipping unsightly and can be a health hazard, but is also a criminal offence. Garden waste can be taken to the recycling centre at St Georges Rd, Dorchester or collected by the Council for a small fee.

  • Have your say in the future development

    of the Piddle Valley -

    The Piddle Valley Neighbourhood Plan

As previously outlined in News & Views a small group of local people was recentlyinvited by the Piddle Valley Parish Council to conduct a feasibility study into the possibility of producing a Neighbourhood Plan in accordance with the recently enacted Localism Bill including data already collected for the Parish Plan.

The new legislation allows local communities to play a more positive role in planning decisions bydrawing up a Neighbourhood Plan which may include specific policies which to meet the needs ofour particular community but are not included in the present Local Plan. However, these have tobe in line with the general strategy of the District Council. This new procedure couldalso accelerate the planning process.

The scope of a Neighbourhood Plan is not restricted to building development. It may involve issuessuch as business, employment, transport, local amenities, tree planting and renewable energy.

The Working Group has now met on 5 occasions and members have attended presentations byWest Dorset District Council and the Campaign to Protect Rural England. They have alsobenefited from the help of Cerne Valley Parish Council who have been one of the front runners inthe implementation of their Neighbourhood Plan within West Dorset.

From this experience it has become clear that there are still a number of uncertainties about theNeighbourhood Plan concept, not least over the questions of the cost of such an exercise, the specialist skills required and the amount of hard work involved.

On the other hand, some issues have become very clear to the group, such as the need to identifythe particular needs of the local community and to produce a practical working plan for localpeople to use over the next decade.

It is vital that all who live and work in the Piddle Valley, can play an active part in shaping its futureby expressing their views. To this end it is proposed that a presentation on the Neighbourhood Planwill be held on Saturday 13th October at Piddle Valley First School, followed by a chance foreveryone to have their say on the possible way forward. Further details of the event will be givenin the next issue of News & Views, but please put the date in your diaries now !

Working group currently consists of Richard Drewe (Chairman), Councillor John Cox (Chairman PiddleValley Parish Council), Councillor Jacqui Cuff (West Dorset District Council), Councillors Terry Cowley,David Saxby and Jane Willitts (Piddle Valley Parish Council), John and Dot Browning, Peter Chance andSue Hennessy. Sally Lloyd Jacob acts as the Link Officer with West Dorset District Council.

  • Piddle Valley CE VA First School ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

”Piddle Valley is an outstanding school. Achievement is consistently high for all pupils because of very strong leadership, outstanding teaching, an exciting curriculum and rigorous tracking of pupils’ progress.” (Ofsted 2012)

Recognised as an ‘outstanding’ school in its Ofsted inspection in March 2012, Piddle Valley First School is very proud. The school was judged under the new inspection framework widely publicised as raising the bar, with only 4% of schools expected to fall into the outstanding category. Despite the new standards, a grade 1 for outstanding was awarded under all four of the areas for inspection: Achievement of pupils, Quality of teaching, Behaviour and safety of pupils and Leadership and management. Due to the timing of the inspection just before the end of the spring term, the full Ofsted report was published only at the beginning of the current summer term.

Headteacher Mrs Tracy Jones, praised the school community “I am very proud of the staff and children who work so incredibly hard on a daily basis and have now been officially recognised for their outstanding qualities. The school has worked hard since the last inspection in November 2008 and has benefited from excellent leadership and support from the Governing body, the previous headteacher and the local community. While we continually strive for improvement in our practices and will focus on provision for more able pupils, we are thrilled to have our dedication to our children recognised.”

Tony Monds, Chair of Governors responded “I am delighted that the consistent hard work of the whole school community under Tracy’s inspirational leadership has been recognised in this way. Ofsted’s judgement is a significant milestone in our sustained programme of continual improvement designed to allow each and every child at our school to fulfil their God-given potential.”

The children, staff, Governors and community celebrated the accolade together, with ice creams in the beautiful school grounds.

Mrs Tracy Jones, Headteacher [email protected] Wow ! What a term it has been !

“Piddle Valley is an outstanding school” is what we were told during feedback from our recent Ofsted inspection. A couple of weeks later we were also given an outstanding grade for our SIAS inspection ! If you would like to read the full reports you can click onto the links on our updated website.

We are very excited by our solar panels that were installed over the Easter holidays. Not only will it save the school money it teaches the children an important environmental message.

  • This term. Robins and Woodpeckers visited Corfe Castle on what was probably the wettest day of the year but they didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits. Year 4’s have just returned from a fabulous few days at Leeson House where they walked to Dancing Ledge on the Purbecks, learned orienteering, went pond dipping and made environmental art. They also went to Corfe Castle where they enjoyed some very gory stories!

All classes have taken part in our enterprise challenge where they have to make as much money as they can. Events included cake sales and a fun activity day. Buzzard’s class held an art exhibition where parents were invited to donate money to ‘buy’ the children’s artwork. All the work had a floral theme done as part of their ‘Glorious Gardens’ topic.

Talking of gardens, we have been making the most of dry weather and are making good use of our beautiful gardens and outdoor area. The raised beds are now planted up with flowers and vegetables and we are looking forward to an abundant harvest.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations came early to our School. The children had a brilliant tour of Piddletrenthide where they learnt about village life sixty years ago. A fascinating experience so a big thank you to all who took part and especially Amy Chambers for organising it. Children returned to school for a party lunch and games on the field and the day was rounded off by cutting a magnificent cake made for the occasion by Lucy Mitchell. We are now looking forward to the rest of the summer term. All classes are doing Olympic themed topics; we have an ‘equality day’, sports day and our summer production ‘Scheherazade’ amongst many other things. As always thank you supporting the school.

    Cath Rothman, Assistant Headteacher

    Feathers pre-school
