HISTORY Around the early 18thcentury, the walled city of Willem-stad had more than 200 houses,and there was no place within thewalls for more buildings. The firstexpansion took place about halfa mile east, that soon becamethe suburb Pietermaai. Pietermaai District lends its name from Dutch captain PIETER DEMEIJ who travelled from Brazil to Curaçao in 1674. Initially Pieter-maai was a narrow strip of land between the sea and the Waaigat. Part of the Waaigat was drained, which gave Pietermaai space in width. Residences were built on both sides of the strip. Only after the Punda wall was demolished in 1860, there were also houses built between Punda and Pieter-maai. The suburb then gave the character of entertainment district with theaters and restaurants. On the 23th of September 1877 a hurricane hit Pietermaai District, several houses were completely wiped away and most of them heavily damaged. During the last decennia of the 20th century Pi-etermaai fell into complete decay! Constant developments in the last 20 years helped Pietermaai regain its former glory.

JAZZ WEEK The last week of August, Pietermaai District cel-ebrates Jazz. Inspired by the Cu-racao North Sea Jazz Foundation with a lot of live performances and jamm sessions (Every year we have some familiar faces from the jazz world show up to join a session).
PIETERMAAI PROEFT Every June we celebrate the different tastes of the Pietermaai District. There will be a fine food courtyard showcasing lots of high quality dishes by the chefs of the many restaurants in our district. This of course accompanied by great wines, special beers and Live Music.
CHRISTMAS FAIR Saturday the 29th of November Pieter-maai District transforms into a Tropical Winter Wonderland. Food & drink stalls, Santa Claus, a Christmas fair and live music will give you a reason to be jolly.
PIETERMAAI PAGARA PARTY Wednesday the 31st of Decem-ber ( 11AM) we invite you to join a typical Curacao Tradition. A pagara party! Along the route of this giant firework you will find food & drink stalls and of course music. Beware… this is during the day!
BLUE SEA FESTIVAL More info coming soon.
KINGSDAY Monday the 27th of April we celebrate the birthday of our king (biggest event of the year). Authentic Dutch kids games, live music, food stalls, lots of secondhand and creative art stalls and much more. Don’t forget to wear orange!
