    SECRET   WORK

    THE BOOK   OF   THE   LODGE

    INTRODUCTION

Mbert   Pike’s   The   Book    of    the   T,odde   was   published   in   1872,in   a   limited   edition.   It   has been   our   finding   that,   outside   of the   vaults   of    the   Supreme   Councils   for   the Southern   andNorthern   Jurisdictions   of    the   United   States,   and   severalGrand Lodge   libraries,   this   document   is   not   to   be   found.   Of the   “Secret   Work,”   no   complete   copies   appear   to   exist outsideof   the   Supreme Councils.

As   Brother   Pike noted   (p   14, Book   of    the   Lodge)   “This   Ritualis   intended   for   instruction   only, in   the   States   of    theSouthern   Jurisdiction,   where   there   are   no   Lodges   workingthe   Ancient   and   Accepted   Scottish   Rite;   to   be   studied   andunderstood   before   investiture   with   the   fourth   degree.   For,without   it,   the   system   of    that   Rite   is incomplete,   and evenlike   a fabric   without foundation.”

It   may   be   correctly   assumed   that   Pike   had intended   thisRitual of   the   first   three   degrees   of   the   Ancient   and   AcceptedScottish   Rite,   Southern   Jurisdiction, as   a supplement   to   the“American Rite”   Degrees   1   through   3,   and   not   a   replacementfor it.   This   to   provide   that   “post—graduate”   instruction   sonecessary to   allow   an effective transition   from   the   one   Riteto the   other.

Due   to   a   prevailing provincial   mentality   that   exists   amongthe hierarchy   of    Freemasonry   today,   the fear that   Pike’sRitual   would   supplant the   existing   American   Rite   Degrees,   haseffectively   buried   this   important   document   in   the   hope   thatits   implied   “threat”   would   somehow   disappear.   But   such   is

    not to   be   the   case.

It   is   with   great   pleasure that   we,   who   are student’s   of Albert   Pike’s   philosophy, and   of    the   Ancient   Mysteries   ingeneral,   publish   Albert   Pike’s   The   Book   of   the   Lodge

The   Secret   Work,   as   provided   here,   to   these three   degreeshas   been   faithfully reconstructed   from   fragments   of    theoriginal   document,   plus   esoteria   from   French,   Spanish,   andLatin   American   manuscripts   that   existed   from   1830   through1880.   In   determining   the   nature   of    the   esoteria and   how

best   to   apply   it,   we   adopted   methodologies   used   by   AlbertPike   in his   Degrees   4— 32.   It   is   our   contention   that thisSecret   Work    is   true   to   the   intent   of Pike’s   Ritual,   and   thatany   variances   (unless otherwise   noted)   are   purelyunintentionaL

    SECRET   WORK

    THE BOOK   OF   THE   LODGE

    I n   th e   middle   a g e s ,   when   the   church   o f   Ro m e,s i t t i n g   on the   ruins   o f   the   f a l l e n   empire,   reigned   supreme

o v e r   consciences,   Masonry,   claiming   a s   i t s   patron   Saint   Johnthe   Evangelist,   needed to   require   similar   tests   and   trials.Like   the   early   Christian   mysteries,   it   was   adiscipline.”   For,   during   whole   centuries,   a   word,   the   leastindiscretion,   a   gesture,   was   a   death warrant.   The   miter   andcrown   were   then   in   league   together against   man.

The   Inquisition   classed   Masons   with   Jews   andheretics,   and   dealt   with   them   by   the   tender   mercies   of torture.   To   be   a   Mason   then,   was   to   expose one’s   self   to   the

same   dangers   as   surrounded   the   Christian under   Nero   andDomitian.   The   existence   of    the entire   Masonic   body   wasinvolved   in   every   initiation.

Masonry   comes   more   directly   from   the   mysteriesof    the   sun,   and   those   of    Mithra, in   Persia. There   theaspirant   commenced   by   easy   tests,   and arrived   by   degreesat   those   that   were   most   cruel,   in   which   his   life was   oftenendangered.   N o   one can   be   initiated,   says   Suidas,   untilafter   he   has   proven,   by   the   most   terrible   trials,   that   hepossesses   a   manly   soul,   exempt from   the   sway   of    every

    passlon.

Masonry   has   softened,   but   has not   chosen   todispense   with,   the   ancient   tests;   for   it   is not   in   freecountries   only   that   she exists;   nor   is   it   in   them   that   sheplays   the   most   important   part.   Neither,   even   in   these,   isthere any   guarantee   of   the   eternity   of   freedom,   or   that   thepowers   of   government   may   not   be   usurped   by   those   to   whichmasonry might   become   dangerous,   and   would   be   hostile, unless false   to   its   mission.

    (TO   THE   SENIOR   D E ACO N)   Give   m e   the   SacredWord.

SD:   The Sacred   Word   cannot   be   pronounced.

The   Sacred    Word   of    this   degree   is   “boaz”,   but   is   variously pronounced    as   “bohaz”   and    “booz.”   In   the   Grand    Orient    of  France,   the   Sacred    Word   of    an   Apprentice   is   “ja kin   (jachin) “. In   addition,   the   Rites   in Europe   make   use   of    a   “Word   of    theSemester”   to   be   used   as   a   password.

The   March   of    an   Apprentice   is   on   the   left    foot.   In   theGrand    Orient    of    France,   the   March   is   the   same   with   theexception   that    it   is   on   the right   foot.

The   Battery   of    this   Degree   is   “*   *   *“,   but    in   the   Grand Orient   of    France it   is   “**   *“.

    THE BOOK   OF   THE   LODGE

V M :   My   brother,   there   are   two   signs   of    a   FellowCraft   Mason:   the   Sign of    Order   is made   by   standing   andplacing   the   right   hand,   half-open,   palm   upwards,   on   theheart,   the   four   fingers curved   and   the   thumb   raised   in   theform of    a   square.   At   the   same time   the   left   hand,   fullyopen, is   raised   to   the   height   of    the   head,   the   palm   inadvance,   and   the fingers   clenched   with   the   thumb   raised   ina   square,   the   elbow   close   to   the   body.
