J Day 1 j

COntemPlAtIng PIlgrImAgeHow lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty!.

Psalm 84:1

Prepare Your Heart

Our hearts yearn for that place called home. No matter how many years we spend on earth, or how comfortable we may feel where we live, our hearts long for permanence and security.

If you have known God for any length of time, you have discovered that you are, like Abraham, one of the “strangers and exiles on the earth” (Hebrews 11:13, nasb). Your home is with the Lord. He is the place of comfort—your refuge and strength. Thus, you must set your heart on pilgrimage (see Psalm 84:5). What does that mean? This week, in your quiet times with the Lord, you will discover the importance of pilgrimage and how to set your heart on this great journey.

Take some time now to withdraw from earthly things and draw near to the Lord so you can maintain a fixed eye on Him as He leads you. Spend some time in silence, drawing near to God, asking Him to quiet your heart and bless your time together. You may write a brief prayer expressing your thoughts in your Journal in the back of this book. Place all that has been consuming your heart and mind in recent days at the throne of God.

Read and Study God’s WordPsalm 84 is the focus of your study this week. The author of Psalm 84 is listed in the

superscription as one of the “Sons of Korah.” Commentators think he was either far away from the temple1 or, as a Korahite of the third branch of Levi’s tribe, assigned the humble work of a doorkeeper at God’s temple2 (see 1 Chronicles 26:1-8). Whether the author was present at the temple or not, he clearly loved being in the temple. That is the point of our study. This psalm is a pilgrimage psalm and describes the believer’s desire and faith journey to worship the Lord in His temple. In the Old Testament, the Lord’s temple implies the Lord’s presence. This psalmist longed to be near God.

2. Read Psalm 84 again, meditating on the words. What do you learn about the psalmist’s desires, his statements of faith (what he knows to be true about God, God’s house, one who is blessed, and so on), and his prayers?

The psalmist’s desires

The psalmist’s statements of faith (what he knows to be true)

The psalmist’s prayers

3. Summarize in two or three sentences your most significant insights about the psalmist’s pilgrimage.

4. How would you define pilgrimage?

5. How is your pilgrimage like the psalmist’s? What can you learn from him that will help you on your journey?

J Set Your Heart on Pilgrimage j

Adore God in PrayerClement of Alexandria defined prayer as “keeping company with God.” Commune with the

Lord today using the prayers in Psalm 84. Personalize each prayer. For example, beginning with verse 1 you might say, “How lovely is Your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty. How I long to be near you. You are majestic and holy and worthy of my highest praise.” As you talk with the Lord, remember He is the one with whom you will spend all eternity and He is your great Companion on your pilgrimage. Bring any immediate needs and desires to Him. You may wish to write out your prayer requests using the Prayer Pages in the back of this book.

Yield Yourself to God

It is only by leaving home and taking a pilgrimage that we will begin to see how our own stories are interwoven with the great romance God has been telling since before the dawn of time. It is on this pilgrimage that we begin to see that each of us has a part in the cosmic love affair that was created specifically with us in mind…Entering into the sacred romance begins with a decision to become a pilgrim of the heart.3

Brent Curtis and John Eldridge in The Sacred Romance

Do you live as a pilgrim on earth? Have you engaged in the pilgrimage of the heart? You may wish to express your thoughts in your journal at the back of this book.

Enjoy His PresenceWhat was your most significant insight today in your quiet time? Write it out in the space

below. Carry that thought with you throughout the day, allowing it to remind you of the Lord’s presence in your life.

Rest in His Love“And He said, ‘My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest’” (Exodus 33:14 nasb).

We will explore the powerful truths from Hebrews 11, the Gallery of God’s Great Pilgrims, also known as the Hall of Fame of Faith. So grab your Bible and let’s get into the Word of God.

“By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he lived as an alien in the land of promise” (Hebrews 11:8-9).
