Pilgrims/ Thanksgiving Unit 2; ColonizationLesson 6What I need to knowWhy did European countries colonize other parts of the world?

2. What geographic features made some locations appealing for colonization?

3. What cultural beliefs did Europeans use to justify their colonization of people around the world?

Hello Everyone! Today we are going to be looking at a well known story of the Pilgrims. Im sure you are very familiar with their story, but there may be some things you didnt know. In order to understand our lesson today, you will first need to remember why countries colonized. In this case we will be looking at the religious reasons for colonization. The second thing you need to remember is the geographic features that were appealing. In this case it was to create a strong community in an already established area more on that later. Lastly, was the cultural beliefs once again looking at the religion behind colonization. 2ObjectivesExplain how environmental conditions and human response to those conditions influence modern societies and regions (e.g. natural barriers, scarcity of resources and factors that influence settlement)

Our objectives for this lesson is pretty simple only one! (read slide)3Guiding Questions1. What factors motivated colonization among European countries?

2. What geographical features were beneficial for colonization? Why?

3. What cultural beliefs did Europeans use to justify their colonization of peoples throughout the world?

5Who are they?Religious Puritans who were living in England.

Wealthier groups

Were being imprisoned in England for speaking against the king and the official religion

Ran to Holland to escape, but found persecution there as well

As you just learned, the Pilgrims were really religious Puritans (and to a degree, separatists) who were trying to escape religious persecution from the King of England. The king created a branch off of Christianity to fulfill his own selfish desires. Since this was not a true branch of Christianity and so many people were not willing to follow this religion because it wasnt true religion. People wanted to reform and go back to the true form. These people became the Puritans (their name referring to the Pure form of Christianity). Trying to free persecution, the Pilgrims went to Holland; but they found persecution there as well. 6MayflowerShip that brought the Pilgrims to the New world.

Originally supposed to be two the other was the Speedwell something was wrong with it, so they ended up filling the Mayflower alone

The famous Mayflower Weve all heard the name. This famous ship was responsible for bringing the Pilgrims to the new world. Originally there were supposed to be two ships (the other was the Speedwell) something was wrong with it so it never ended up going. For that reason, all the Pilgrims ended up going on one ship. 7MayflowerIt was a really long journey to the New world

Original destination was to be in New England

After only 66 days, they began to fall ill and many died along the way

Ended up not reaching their destination and landed in an unknown area

There was some discontent on the ship, so they created the Mayflower contract which became the first form of government in the U.S.

The trip over to the New World was not safe.. Nor was it luxurious. It took a really long time for them to reach the New World and they endured some really rough seas. Their original destination was supposed to be New England They wanted to be able to join the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but after just 66 days many began to fall ill and die along the trip. The skipper became lost and ended up arriving in the wrong location. Because the trip had been so difficult, he refused to go in search of the correct location and forced the Pilgrims to disembark where they were (eventually earning the name Plymouth Rock and the Plymouth colony). Before leaving the ship, the leaders of the colony wanted to settle some disagreements that had arisen on the boat. They created the Mayflower contract which became the first official form of government in the New World. 8What was life like in Plymouth When Pilgrims FINALLY reach destination Call it Plymouth

This was a colony made of wealthy-ish people they did not know how to survive and landed during a non-growing season

Didnt know how to farm

Began to die off. quickly

Once again, once the Pilgrims did finally arrive, it was called Plymouth. The colony was not made of up of laborers they were middle class citizens who were not used to working hard, building their own homes, or growing their own food. They had a rough time adjusting to this way of life and many died from starvation, freezing conditions, and sickness. 9Squanto and the Native AmericansReached out to the Colonists

Gave them food and treated the ill

Taught them to farm

Taught them crop rotations

They would never have made it without them

Thankfully a local Native American tribe took pity on the Pilgrims it took a while for them both to warm up to each other, but they eventually did. The tribe actually had a member who spoke English (Squanto) and he taught the Pilgrims how to farm, tricks to back their fields produce more, and how to build strong and long lasting homes. The Pilgrims would have literally died without the help of Squanto and his tribe. 10Thanksgiving What is it? Well. We all know it as a time off from school and some YUMMY food.

This celebration is to give thanks for a successful growing season. The native Americans were instrumental in teaching the settlers to growing

In honor of this time, the Pilgrims got together a lot of food their grown and caught food and invited the Indians to give thanks for this successful time.

So we all LOVE Thanksgiving the yummy food, time off school, and time with family. The history of this holiday may have been forgotten. It began as a religious holiday that the Puritans always celebrated After enduring such a hard time, the Pilgrims wanted to give thanks to God for surviving and give thanks to the Native Americans for training and saving their lives. They each brought food and shared their harvest in thanks. 11What I didnt Know about it. Follow the link below to learn some interesting facts you may not have known about our special holiday .

Review: Guiding questions1. What factors motivated colonization among European countries?

2. What geographical features were beneficial for colonization? Why?

3. What cultural beliefs did Europeans use to justify their colonization of peoples throughout the world?

Alright, lets review what we learned. What factors motivated? Escaping persecution from the new church of England and the desire to purify the church. 2. What geographic features? Original plan was to join the Massachusetts bay colony, but ended up landing on the sandy shores and were able to move inward and find protection in the woods with the help of Native Americans. 3. Cultural beliefs? They truly thought their only choice to survive physically and spiritually was to leave and create a new community. For this reason they felt justified in their actions. 13
