Greengs Pilots

This month I would like to address pride: looking first at specific definion.

Oen referred to as sasfacon with self: the happy sasfied feeling

somebody experiences when having or achieving something special that

other people admire. The proper sense of our own value that is the correct

level of respect for the importance and value of your personal character, life

efforts or achievements. Embracing this definion, may I tell you that each

and every me that I am honored to call to order a meeng of our Pilot Cub I

am full of pride. I look out among you all seeing vitality, encouragement,

generosity, good humor and the desire to be just where you are at that

moment. As I move about our community there is never a me that I

idenfy myself as a Pilot that it is not met with a posive response and again

I take great pride in our organizaon.

You are all engaged in acve lives and yet always add Pilot to your

schedules which dear members, is the main reason that our club remains a

successful service organizaon. We certainly would not be if our members

were not proud of their status and did not reach out to share our pride in

Pilot with others. Having said that, a thank you is in order to Diane Trask for

bringing John Trask into Pilot, to Leanne Hansard for Ruthie Roberts Jones, to

Diane Welch for Hilary Reilly, to Shar Barron for Alonia Gainous, Flo Griffin

for Rachel Arazashvili and of course Sylvia Popowski for Pat Masse. You

sponsors take pride in being a Pilot and choose to share that “happy sasfied

feeling” with somebody else so that they too could experience our pride in

what we do as Pilots. Welcome new members for embracing us, will open

fulfilling vehicles in which to serve our community. Thank you Pilots I take

great pride in being among you.

Talk about a fun event! 63 bowlers emerged on the Ormond Lanes on January 20 to join us for our third annual Bowling for your Brain event. The raffle baskets were better than ever thanks to Basket Babe, Diane Welch (I learned so much from her!). We had donations from so many locals including Masterpiece Jewelry, Daytona Lagoon, and Zappi’s Italian Garden Restaurant. Salon 101, Cindy Lee’s Nails & Facial Institute, and Mary Kay (Thanks Jean Stelter!) are going to make us MORE beautiful in 2013. Jay from Jay’s Artwork and local artist Sharon Friedman filled our creative desires with their wonderful pieces. And

the fun just keeps happening with our passes to Cinematique and all the Daytona Fun Parks.

Our sponsors included the Haven Hospice, Gateway Bank, and Humana thanks to Marlene Almanza, Libby Vescovi, and Shirley Pyle. We proudly had their banners displayed above our 15 lanes!

The crew of President Joyce Conger, Diane Dunn, Shar Barron, Libby Vescovi, Leanne & Wayne

Hansard, Jennifer Beckwith, Priscilla Chanfrau, Marsha Lewis, Marlene Almanza, Becky Nero-Wall, John & Diane Trask , Shirley Pyle, Michelle Galbreath and Sylvia Popowski made set-up and clean-up a breeze.

Thanks to all of you!

The final tally is not in. We are expecting to meet and exceed last year’s take. Regardless of the bottom line, bowlers and families are ready for next year. And our wonderful club will be there to make it happen!

Things here in the Mary Ellen Thomas Pilot

Scholarship House have been pre(y busy;

I have been dealing with trying to keep up

with all my work and trying to have

somewhat of a social life, ha ha. SSF is

having it’s 3rd annual 5k in February and

we just made our banner for it, it's not at the house right

now but if I can find a picture of it I will show you!

Each house has to make a different theme for the 5k and

ours is Forrest Gump so I think it should be pre(y

interesHng. We are also doing a video skit for it as well and

we are going to try and get as many people in the house in

the skit as we can, there is a contest between all the hous-

es, so keep your fingers cross for the Pilot house.

We also had a blood drive and a few weeks ago we had a

fundraiser to support the 5k.. Other than

that, not much has been going on, every-

one is just trying to keep up with classes

and get back in the swing of the semester

aJer the holiday.

Dollars & Cents

It is all about the money! Yes, we continue to succeed in our efforts to keep a sound treasury and support the programs in the community related to brain disorders as well as scholarship with our

houses and programs we support at DSC. Each member of the Pilot Club of the Halifax Area should be patting themselves in

the back for jobs well done with each of our fundraising projects for the year. To date we have exceeded our financial goals in all projects. Money is still out for the Bowling for Your Brain but I am certain that when all is in, we will reach the

projected goal. Thank you Pilots for making me, the treasurer, look so good. I only guard and care for the funds, we all work to raise them and thoughtfully dispense the money in the community. Your Dollar Diva, Diane Welch

What are auHsm spectrum disorders?

AuHsm spectrum disorders (ASDs) are a group of developmental

disabiliHes caused by a problem with the brain. ScienHsts do not

know yet exactly what causes this problem. ASDs can impact a

person’s funcHoning at different levels, from very mildly to severely.

There is usually nothing about how a person with an ASD looks that

sets them apart from other people, but they may communicate,

interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most

people. The thinking and learning abiliHes of people with ASDs can

vary from giJed to severely challenged.

AuHsHc disorder is the most commonly known

type of ASD, but there are others, including

“pervasive developmental disorder not

otherwise specified” (PDD-NOS) and Asperger

Syndrome.

Our Membership program meeting offered a couple videos presented by John Trask, of the Veterans Day program that some Pilots along with the Rolling Thunder presented. They worked with the homeless and disabled veterans, cleaning and clothing them with other volunteers from the Community, sponsored by Rue & Ziffra, PA. They were also successful in

finding a home for one of the Veteran family. Thanks are offered to all who participated.

What a wonderful time to install 2 new members too. Diane Dunn also reminded all of us that we are ALL mentors to all the new members. Always be available to answer questions, if

you don't know the answers, then this is a good time to research it and learn the answer too.

Remember, if your friend or neighbor hasn't joined, it's

probably cause she hasn't been asked! Remember, Pilot is

"The Organization of Choice"!

Pilots Visit the Marcody Ranch

The day was breezy, sunny and full of excitement for the

visiHng Pilots. Our group consisHng of members Sylvia

Popowski, Diane Welch, Pat Masse and Joyce Conger

entered the world of Hope Reins TherapeuHc Riding Cen-

ter at Marcody Ranch with a tour conducted by ExecuHve Director, Hope Rosenthal

and Pilot Hilary Reilly. Hope Reins is one of nearly 800 NARHA member centers

throughout the world, and NARHA advocates for EAAT, Equine Assisted AcHviHes

and Therapies. Their brochure states, “Whether it’s a five-year-old with Down

Syndrome, a forty-five-year - old recovering from a spinal cord injury or a senior

ciHzen recovering from a stroke, research shows that individuals of all ages

who parHcipate in EAAT can experience physical and emoHonal rewards.”

We observed while trained volunteers assisted in mounHng and riding for several

riders living with AuHsm. These riders ranged in age from childhood to adult and

many were accompanied by Social Services from the Duval Home. Debbie and her

associate Suzanne bring several of their residents to the ranch on a weekly basis

and acclaim some of posiHve effects that this therapy has on the parHcipants.

AuHsm oJen causes frustraHon with the in ability to interact verbally and over

Hme, these riders begin to overcome their emoHonal challenges by developing a

unique relaHonship formed with the horse leading to in-

creased confidence, paHence and self-esteem. One young

rider has evolved over the past four years into an accom-

plished equestrian, entering a horse show competeHon. The

joy on her face along with so many others in this program

certainly put joy into our hearts.

We want to thank Pilot Reilly, (a trained volunteer in the

program) for making this visit possible and opening another

road on which our club may want to travel. See more in the

newsle(er about their upcoming fundraiser and contact

Hilary Reilly if you would like to know more or take a tour.

Meanwhile think about our how we can become part of this

stellar enterprise in assisHng brain health and brain related

injuries our Plans of Work is just around the corner.

Each year we host a fundraiser called “Hope Reins Annual Show What You Know Day”. In addition to receiving financial donations from our community businesses, local professionals donate their time to perform in our Show. Perhaps the best part of the day is when our very

own riders – those who attend Marcody Ranch as well as those who are in the Hope Reins Therapeutic Riding program – perform!

This is an all-day event Saturday, March 16 from 10 to 4 pm attended by our parents and friend as well as members of the community at large. It is a wonderful time for those in the community to stop by and

see all that Hope Reins & Marcody Ranch have to offer. Friends of Hope Reins donate items to be sold in our Silent Auction. We have an area set aside for volunteers to “man” the tables and take bids. Toward the end of the day, we announce the winners. The Silent Auction is the cornerstone of our fundraising for the day. Entry tickets, a raffle, and a portion of the proceeds from sales

from our food tent sponsored by “A Gourmet Catering Affair” are the other sources of our funds raised. Last year, we netted around $1,000. Needless to say, we hope to raise even more this year!

We seek help in obtaining items (horse related would be great!) – however, anything that is interesting and unique would be appreciated. We do not usually create baskets for the bids, but, we are open to suggestions.

Sincerely, Hilary Reilly
