SynopsisPima Theatre treats us to another childrens favorite by acclaimed playwright Jos Cruz Gonzlez (The Astronaut Farmworker). This story travels deep into the Amazon with a young boy named Aki on a quest to save his home. When a fire demon threatens to destroy his village and the surrounding sacred forest, Aki departs on an adventure into a mystical world where each animal and plant has its own remarkable voice. On this epic journey he begins to understand his place in his fragile Amazon home amidst the clash of nature and the modern world. The play features a wealth of visual elements, original music, audience interaction, and imaginative sets /costumes (made of recycled material). Themes include contemporary ecological concerns, the power of community, and the knowledge of traditional heritage as a valuable resource for the survival of our planet.

CharactersAK (ah-KEE): a young Amazonian Indian boy. He wants to be a warrior instead of a shaman.

UNCLE WAKOTE (wah-KOH-tey): a medicine man. AKs uncle. A wise man. He also plays a VILLAGE WARRIOR, THE JAGUAR KING, TOUCAN, and POTATO PLANT.

PEREIRA (peh-REH-ra): a ruthless man who wears an eye patch. He is the FIRE DEMON.

MAURICIO (rpao-REE-syo): PEREIRAs assistant. Superstitious and kind. A local.

ESTRELA (eh-STRAY-la): a star maiden. She also plays PIRA (PEE-ra), VILLAGE WARRIOR, GHOST #1, TURTLE, YAM PLANT, and FROG.

SQUASH PLANT: also plays PAXKE (PAHSH-kay), VILLAGE WARRIOR, GHOST #2, and an ENCANTADO, etc.

PINK DOLPHINS, MACAW, SLOTH, SNAKE, PIRANHA, BATS, and COBRA GRANDE (KO-bra GRAHN-djee) are manipulated by the actors.

THE MAGIC RAINFOREST: An Amazon Adventure SettingThe Amazon rainforest.

Where is the Amazon rainforest? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_rainforestThe Amazon rainforest, covering much of northwestern Brazil and extending into Colombia, Peru and other South American countries, is the worlds largest tropical rainforest, famed for its biodiversity. Its crisscrossed by thousands of rivers, including the powerful Amazon. River towns, with 19th-century architecture from rubber-boom days, include Brazils Manaus and Belm and Perus Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado.

How important is the Amazon rainforest?Rainforests are often called the lungs of the planet for their role in absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and producing oxygen, upon which all animals depend for survival. Rainforests also stabilize climate, house incredible amounts of plants and wildlife, and produce nourishing rainfall all around the planet.

What countries have the Amazon rainforest in them? The nine countries that have the Amazon rainforest in their borders are: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.

How much is left of the Amazon rainforest? There are more than 150 acres lost every minute of every day, and 78 million acres lost every year! More than 20 percent of the Amazon rainforest is already gone, and much more is severely threatened as the destruction continues. It is estimated that the Amazon alone is vanishing at a rate of 20,000 square miles a year. Dec 21, 2012

FACTS TO KNOW ABOUT RAINFORESTSTHE GLOBAL COVERAGE OF RAINFORESTSCovering less than 2 percent of the Earth's total surface area, the world's rainforests are home to 50 percent of the Earth's plants and animals. Rainforests can be found all over the world from as far north as Alaska and Canada to Latin America, Asia and Africa. Rainforests are found on every continent across the Earth, except

Antarctica.

There are two major types of rainforest: temperate rainforests and tropical rainforests. The largest

temperate rainforests are found on North America's Pacific Coast and stretch from Northern California up into Canada. Temperate rainforests used to exist on almost every continent in the world, but today only 50

percent 75 million acres of these forests remain worldwide.

THE RAINFOREST AS PART OF OUR GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT AND WELL-BEINGRainforests act as the world's thermostat by regulating temperatures and weather patterns. One-fifth of the world's fresh water is found in the Amazon Basin. Rainforests are critical in maintaining the Earth's limited supply

of drinking and fresh water.

THE ABUNDANT LIFE AND IMPORTANT RESOURCES THAT RAINFORESTS SHARE WITH USA typical four-square-mile patch of rainforest contains as many as 1,500 flowering plants, 750 species of trees, 400

species of birds and 150 species of butterflies. Rainforests provide many important products for people: timber, coffee, cocoa and many medicinal products, including those used in the treatment of cancer. Seventy percent of the plants identified by the U.S. National Cancer Institute as useful in the treatment of cancer are

found only in rainforests. More than 2,000 tropical forest plants have been identified by scientists as having anti-cancer properties. Less than one percent of the tropical rainforest species have been analyzed for their medicinal

value.

THE THREATS TO RAINFORESTS, INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AND SPECIESRainforests are threatened by unsustainable agricultural, ranching, mining and logging practices. Before 1500

A.D., there were approximately 6 million indigenous people living in the Brazilian Amazon. But as the forests

disappeared, so too did the people. In the early 1900s, there were less than 250,000 indigenous people living

in the Amazon. Originally, 6 million square miles of tropical rainforest existed worldwide. But as a result of

deforestation, only 2.4 million square miles remain. At the current rate of tropical forest loss, 510 percent of tropical rainforest species will be lost per decade. Nearly 90 percent of the 1.2 billion people living in extreme

poverty worldwide depend on forests for their livelihoods. Fifty-seven percent of the world's forests, including

most tropical forests, are located in developing countries. Between 2000 and 2012, 2.3 million square kilometers

of forests around the world were cut down. That's roughly the size of all of the states in the U.S. east of the

Mississippi River.

Animals That Live in the Amazon Rainforest According to The World Wildlife Fund, over 427 species of mammals, 1,294 species of birds, 378 types of reptiles, 427 kinds of amphibians and 3,000 species of fish live in the Amazon rainforest, along with a vast array of plants and other organisms. Many more that have not yet been studied and categorized live there as well. Here are just a few of the Amazon rainforests most famous animals.

Anacondas live in wet areas such as swamps, marshes and streams mainly within tropical rainforests like the Amazon. They are agile in the water, and because they have eyes on top of their heads, they can watch unseen for prey. Famous for swallowing their prey whole, anacondas eat many types of animals, such as wild pigs, turtles and even jaguars.

The howler monkey uses its loud call to warn other animals to stay out of its territory. It eats mainly fruit, and lives in groups of 10 to 30 howler monkeys, which include both males and females. The largest monkey in the Americas, it also produces one of the loudest calls, which can be heard for up to three miles.

The jaguar lives in the rainforests of Central and South America, although it used to live as far north as the southwestern United States. They remain the largest cat in the Americas, and the third largest in the world. They can grow to more than 300 lbs. and eight feet long (including the tail), and can swim and climb well. As a charismatic symbol of the rainforest, they inspire people to protect the vast tracts of land they need for survival.

Famous for its unusual appearance, the poison dart frog emits a poison from its skin that can paralyze, and sometimes kill, its predators. Its bright coloration, rather than camouflaging it, warn predators to stay away. The different species of poison dart frog bear many colors, such as gold, copper, green, blue and red, and many are extremely attentive to their young. Some species even carry their eggs and tadpoles on their backs.

Sloths have long arms for climbing trees, and long fur. They live in the rainforest canopy and eat mainly leaves and fruits. Known for sleeping a lot (up to 20 hours a day) and being sluggish, sloths are so slow-moving that algae sometimes grows on their coats. If attacked, however, they fight fiercely. Two main species of sloths exist: two-toed and three-toed sloths.

Dolphins, otters and many other animals live in the rivers of the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon river dolphin, often known as the pink dolphin, is the largest and most common river dolphin on the planet. It eats fish, occasionally feeding on shellfish or turtles as well.

The scarlet macaw has a high level of intelligence and has a long lifespan, sometimes living 60 years or more. Scarlet macaw populations have been devastated by poaching, fueled by the demand for keeping exotic birds as pets. Other factors, such as degradation of their environments, has threatened these birds as well, as Bruce Bavar discusses in his book, Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw. Conservation organizations are working to help this species thrive, and it remains a spectacular sight in the Amazon rainforest.
