Russian III
As you know, Russian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. A full listing of the alphabet has been included for your reference, beginning on page 3. In the Reading Lessons which follow, it is assumed that you have completed the Reading Lessons included in Pimsleurs Russian I and II.
You may remember that stress in pronunciation can change the sounds of Russian vowels, and even some consonants. As there is no universal rule as to the stress and patterns of stress with which each word is pronounced, we have indicated where the stress is to be placed by showing the stressed vowel(s) in boldface.
In the first nine reading lessons, you will continue to practice the pronunciation of Cyrillic letters and combinations of letters. For those who are inter-ested, an English translation of the words and sentences making up each lesson has been provided immediately after the page containing the text for that lesson. Reading lessons Ten through Twenty contain mostly vocabulary you already know, allowing you to see how known sounds and combi-nations of sounds are represented in print. However, its important that as you first read through each
Introduction

lesson, you concentrate on the recognition and pronunciation of the Cyrillic, whether the words are new or familiar.
There are twenty reading lessons for Russian III. These can all be found, along with full instructions, at the end of the program. You can do these reading lessons along with the units if you wish, doing a new reading lesson after every unit or two. However, since the later reading lessons contain known vocabulary taken from throughout the course, you may prefer to do them all together after completing the thirty units.
Introduction (continued)
3Russian III
Cyrillic Alphabet
The Cyrillic alphabet is comprised of 33 letters, listed in order starting below, along with a guide to the sounds represented by each letter. Many Russian letters (mostly vowels, but also some consonants) have more than one sound, depending on the amount of stress given to the letter or its position in the word. The examples listed in the Guide to Pronunciation are approximate English equivalentsas in any language, the pronunciations will vary slightly in different letter combinations.

6Russian III
Cyrillic Alphabet (continued)
In addition, keep in mind that unstressed vowels, especially at the ends of words, will often sound very much like one another. You should also remember that these pronunciations should only be taken as guidelines. Its best to learn and practice the pronunciations that you hear the speakers use, trying to make yours sound as close as possible to theirs, rather than worrying too much about the English equivalents.
