Course Descriptions & Calendar:
Exploring the Dynamics of Leadership: This 1-hour Lunch & Learn
explores in broad strokes three essential responsibilities supervisors and
managers must recognize the 4-E’s of Leadership. Internalizing these
simple but effective principles can help new supervisors and seasoned
managers alike build trust within their teams while avoiding personal and
agency liability. Discovering the multi-faceted functions of a supervisor can set the new leader on
the path toward success and help refocus veteran managers back to staff-centric leadership.

Principles of Progressive Discipline (Supervisors Only): This 1-hour Lunch & Learn delves
into the progressive disciplinary process. One of the most
challenging aspects of leadership, correcting employee
behavior can often be stressful and create conflict. A greater
understanding of the disciplinary steps, the philosophies that
guide the application of discipline, learning how to effectively
document behavior and performance deficiencies can often
help minimize negative outcomes. This course also explores the
different applications of the Performance Improvement
Recommendations (PIR).

Emotional Intelligence: This 1-hour Lunch & Learn
provides useful insights into how emotions shape our
behavior and how we can use this to inspire high
performance. Participants will increase their knowledge of
"EQ" to improve their interpersonal and intra-personal
skills, adaptability, stress management and general mood. A
deeper understanding of emotional intelligence builds an
understanding of how emotions shape who we are, how we relate to others and how to improve
relationships. Participants will leave with tools that shine a light on what EQ is and how to use it
to a greater effect.

cultivating a culturally diverse workforce provides an

FMLA, ADA & Medical Related Issues: This 1-hour Lunch &
Learn provides participants with ADA and FMLA compliance
guidelines for supervisors, including all the tools and practical
knowledge you need to effectively manage your FMLA and ADA
compliance responsibilities.
Specifically, this course covers the ADA and FMLA rules, laws,
and guidelines for employers, as well as the rules for FMLA
intermittent leave guidelines, the ADA Reasonable Accommodation requirements, what
supervisors can do to protect against FMLA and ADA abuse, plus how to manage HIPPA protected

management within the County, helping managers and team leaders

Merit Rules & Hearings: This 1-hour Lunch & Learn course will
discuss the history, purpose and maintenance of the Pinal County
Uniform Merit Rules. Additionally, the application and importance of
the Merit Rules and how they relate to Merit Protected employees will
be discussed delving into how the progressive disciplinary process
unfolds leading up to a possible Merit Hearing. Merit Hearings will also
be reviewed to help participates understand the process and how the fair application of Merit Rules
play a role in that setting.

Supervisor Skill Building Workshop: This 8-hour skill
building workshop combines elements of five Lunch & Learn
courses as well as two core compentency courses. Topics

Note: These classes are open to all Pinal County Employees and Supervisors including
Non-Probationary Employees.
Harassment Prevention (Mandatory Attendance): This 45-minute core
competency course provides volunteers, interns, employees, supervisors,
managers and directors an awareness of the laws and issues relating to
discrimination and bullying in the workplace. It details the actions and
responsibilities for avoiding discriminatory and harassing practices, associated
with race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, and physical or mental disability to create a
workplace free of harassment and discrimination.

Code of Conduct (Mandatory Attendance): This 45-minute course
discusses Pinal County’s dedication to fostering an environment of
consistent fairness and accountability in all of its dealings. This Code
of Conduct Course provides ethics training for employees, elected
officials and County boards and committees. The objective of this
course is to ensure those who represent the County understand the expectations regarding
acceptable practices that are required to maintain the confidence and trust of the public and to
mitigate potential penalties for both the individual and the County.

By-Stander Intervention (Mandatory Attendance): This 1.75
hour interactive course delves into the concepts of how we as a
society intervene in discriminatory situations. Most problems begin
in group settings where we are less likely to intervene. Friends are
usually in a better position to do something. You will be in a
situation in which you can help in the future, so it will be important
to learn safe, acceptable methods of intervene. We all have a responsibility to look out for one
another.
As bystanders, we all have a choice: do nothing, do something to prevent or stop a situation from
worsening, or do something to make the situation worse. We are all called, as American citizens
and public employees, to do something to prevent or stop a situation from worsening. Bystander
intervention training discusses available resources and how to effectively intervene in situations
involving a variety of discriminatory situations.

to identify it, and better protect yourself against these

OSHA/Workplace Safety (Mandatory Attendance): This 1-hour
course introduces the employee to workplace occupational health
and safety. The attendee will learn safe work practices as well as
how to identify and prevent or correct problems associated with
occupational safety and health in the workplace. This course also discusses the role of OSHA in
the workplace pertaining to the responsibilities of employees, managers, and supervisors.
