It’s that time of year again when we find ourselves short on time as we jump into the hustle and bustle that this season can bring. Stress levels and expectations rise as we all too often become determined once again to make this the “most unforgettable Christmas ever”. While there is something to be said about trying to please our loved ones as well as endeavouring to make memorable memories for them to carry through to the next years ahead, somewhere in all of the gift wrap and tinsel it’s nice to remember that this season also brings to us an opportunity to share and to care about many who are not so fortunate. It does our heart good to know that love and caring can and should go well beyond the confines of our homes and of our own family. In doing so we teach our children those all important and meaningful lessons of sharing and caring and of course we create new memories of “the most unforgettable Christmas ever”.

Look What’s Happening In Our Classrooms

Mrs. Neigel: Students are reading part II of Wonder, the story of a young boy with a facial difference that prevented him from going to a mainstream school - until now! We are working on building vocabulary using this novel and editing and proofreading texts. In Mathematics we are learning about connections among math strands - addition/subtraction, fractions/decimals/percent, probability/proportion. We are learning about contact between Europeans and Aboriginal people in the 1700s and its lasting impact across 300 years. At the moment we are integrating the Arts with our social studies making beautiful dream catchers which include our ideas about early colonization. The students have been helpful and hardworking during the transition from one teacher to another.

Mr. Reed: Grade 4s collaborated to make a suspended drying wrack for hats and gloves, using what they learned about pulley sys-tems to raise and lower the wrack.

Mrs. Osmond: Coding is considered to be the #1 job skill of the future. Not only is it used in the technology world, it is used in mechanic's shops, manufacturing, hospitals, movies. Here is a link to an article which discusses the importance of educating our youth in coding. Mrs. Osmond's class will be participating in the Worldwide Hour of Code event happening in December. The class has been learning how to code using "blocks". The progression will eventually bring us to use the Python Coding system. https://www.fastcompany.com/3060883/the-future-of-work/why-coding-is-the-job-skill-of-the-future-for-everyone

Mrs. Reid Stashick: December is upon us already, where has the time gone? In Kindergarten we are always on the go. The children are nicely settled and the friendships continue to grow. We are working with two sets of Big Buddies these days. Mrs. Neigel's class are our Reading Buddies every Friday afternoon and Mrs. Osmond's Grade 5s are our new Math Buddies every Day 4. Being able to have the close attention of the bigger kids really pays off for both groups, we love our buddy time!! It was lovely to meet with many of our parents on the PA day. Please remember to send in the signed copy of the report card page if you haven’t already so our rec-ords are complete in your child’s file.

Ms. Loevenmark: This month students will be exploring communities during Social Studies. Grade 1s will begin an independent pro-ject about a community helper and grade 2s will create a project on a celebration of their choice (i.e., birthday, Christmas, Hannu-kah, Chinese New Year, etc.). In math we are working on our Number of the Week by displaying 2-digit numbers in a wide variety of ways. We continue to stretch our minds with open-ended math challenges.

French - Mme Bishop: JK/SK's are enjoying playing Math games in French. Grades 1 & 2 are working on a French song for our Christmas Sing-A-Long. Intermediate grades are working on their final projects. Grade 7's are finishing a unit on Entrepreneurs of a restaurant and grade 8's will be making board games.

Mrs. Thomas: It was a satisfying, yet somewhat sad day when we finished reading “The BFG.” No more BFG and his quirky lan-guage. We played the Jabbeling Game and have been busy writing and revising radio plays to perform for the school in Ala-bama. Mrs. Thomas read “The Road to Afghanistan” to us just before Remembrance Day. She had a few questions and messaged the author, Linda Granfield. Linda responded and we are learning more about being a writer. She also sent us a word search for the book. We emailed her to thank her and asked about her working space as we found out that she likes to research. (For an adult book that she has been writing she has over 150 binders that has taken 20 years of research so far and she is still not finished!) Her room is 260 cm by 3 m. We used our nearly found metre and centimetre benchmarks to work out the size. Please have your child show you the size of her office. We are learning more about the structure of a report. (Hint: hamburger) We are wrapping up science (Structures and Pulley and Gears) and heading back in time (Early Settlers and Early Societies)

Ms. Clarke: Grade 7 class is working on creating innovations to improve the building of structures in earthquake-prone areas. They will use their knowledge of strength and stability to help them plan and model the designs.

Mrs. Wasmund: The Grade 8 students have been working on a STEM Survival integrated Unit in Science where they have been busy building huts and bridges. Each student is part of a construction team. They have a total of five challenges to complete and for each challenge they earn points. For their next challenge they will be building a water proof container. Also, the students were introduced to Coding and will be participating in the Worldwide Hour of Code in December. The students are excited to learn coding.

Ms. Mitton: In the Arts, students are working hard on Reader's Theatre plays, making Christmas puppets and have been singing in preparation for the Sing-a-long on December 9th. They are very excited to sing for parents and guests. We hope to see you there!

SNOW DAYS

Listen to Star 96 or 105MyFm for bus cancellations.

If your child comes to school, remember they need to know the plan for pick up. When busses are cancelled

in the morning, they are cancelled for the day.

Also, if your child is a bus student it is not necessary to report the absence.

If your child is a walker...please call to confirm if they will not be attending, otherwise we will

need to make a call home.

Regardless of if your child takes a bus or walks to school, all students

are marked as a G day, the absence does not count on their record.

For any severe weather conditions, parents have the last say

in deciding if it safe to send your child to school.

You can call and leave a message at any time of the day or night on the school voice mail.
