PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Hello Piñon Parents!
Happy Autumn! Fall is definitely in the air. The cool fall air has been very
invigorating during our Move-It Time each morning. It is a great way to start the
day.
We have been busy here at Piñon in other ways. The teachers and students have
settled into their routines, our Safety Patrol is up and running, and many of our
clubs have started. Primary students have finished their initial Istation
assessments, and upper grade students have completed MAP testing. We have
several before school enrichment clubs starting at 7:30 and I have heard good
things from the kids about these experiences.
We had a fabulous Preschool Back to School Night. The teachers set up some
wonderful centers and provided snacks and fun galore. It was a great evening.
Coming up we have a Bond Election Meeting for Pinon and Chamisa parents to
hear more about the election and to help us get the word out. That meeting will
be at Chamisa on Wednesday, October 2nd from 5:30-6:30PM.
PTO will be hosting an evening PTO meeting to see if we can get more parent
involvement. This meeting will be at the White Rock Library on Tuesday, October
8th from 7:00-8:00PM. Please come out and support our PTO. They do so much
for our students and we need lots of volunteers to make things happen. In fact,
the Fall Carnival is scheduled for Saturday, October 19th and we would
appreciate your assistance and participation at this event. If you can help out,
here are two links to sign-up: Bake Sale and Pie Walk. The Fall Scholastic Book
Fair will run from October 18th-25th and be open during the Carnival.
Weekday shopping hours are 7:45 A.M. – 4:15 P.M.
Soon we will be preparing or our first round of Parent-Teacher conferences,
marking a half-way point in the semester. Your student’s teacher will be
contacting you to set up a meeting time. This is a great opportunity to check on
your child’s progress in school and we encourage you to attend. Thank you all for
your participation in your students' education. I am glad to be working together
as a team to help them achieve all that they are capable of, and THRIVE
during their elementary years.

UPCOMING DATES
IMPORTANT ATTEDANCE REMINDERS
It is our policy that parents must come into the office and sign their students in if they are late in
the morning. We are having problems with parents dropping their students off late without signing
them in, and it makes keeping an accurate record of attendance difficult.
It is our policy that parents who sign their students out during the day must wait in the office (or
in the hallway outside the office) for their students to meet them. For safety reasons, we need to
see you and your students meet up before you leave.
Hello Piñon Parents and Guardians!
My name is Lea Ann Alison, attendance clerk for Piñon
Elementary School. In order to account for our students, I need
parents to communicate with me about where your children are.
To report an absence, you have a few options. You can call the
absence line at 663-2681 and leave a detailed message. These will
be checked each morning until 9:00a.m. You can also call the office
during office hours at 663-2680 or 663-2684 to report an absence.
Office hours are from 7:45a.m. – 3:45 p.m. My email is another
option- [email protected].
If your child will not be here first thing in the morning but will be
coming later in the day, please just give me a call to let me know so
it is not recorded as an unexcused absence. For prearranged
absences, there is a form that needs to be filled out. You may pick
one up from the office. If you ever have any questions, please feel
free to call me. Thank you in advance!

When to keep your child home
Any fever over 100.5 without any fever-reducing medication (like ibuprofen or
Tylenol) in the past 24 hours.
Any vomiting in the past 24 hours that isn’t caused by post-nasal drip or
inadvertently gagging.
Any unrelenting or uncontrolled cough.
Contagious or infectious diseases (such as strep throat that hasn’t been treated
for a minimum of 24 hours).
Any condition that makes it uncomfortable to participate in class (such as a recent
fracture or urinary tract infection). The nurse can sometimes provide comfort
measures to keep kids at school.
If you’re unsure if your child should stay home, please consult with the nurse at
633-2687.
Seeking RN’s
If you happen to be a RN or know one, we are in desperate need of substitute
nurses. The good news is that the work hours are school hours, so you still have
the evenings free for family or friends. And you can specify which of the district
schools you’re willing to sub at.

Happy Fall to all! This is my favorite season! Nature shows us more colors, the weather
gives us more opportunities to be outside, and everything smells so good!
Students have finished their artwork for Art to Remember. Order Forms should be handed out the third week of October. Students studied different artists, and different art styles to inspire self-portraits. I think you will enjoy their work! We are moving on to a fiber arts unit. Kinders will be creating felt monsters, based on the book, Monsters Love School, while learning about shapes, colors, and patterns. First grade will be creating felt fish based on the book, Fish Eyes. Second graders will be learning all about owls, and creating owl wall hangings using cardboard, felt, and yarn. Third grade will learn how to sew while creating burlap buddies, based on the book, Glad Monster/Sad Monster. Fourth graders will learn the art of appliqué and the blanket stitch, to create animal pillows. Fifth grade will also look at the book, Glad Monster/Sad Monster, to inspire mini “feeling monster” pillows. Sixth grade will create their own circular looms, and learn to weave using radial symmetry. All of our lessons are National Art Education Standards based, and teach both the elements and principles of art, as well as integrated with many academic common core standards. Our next unit will be a painting unit based on marine and sea life. The unit will be introduced by an art substitute teacher while I am in Europe for two weeks. I’ve written all the standard based lessons for our sub. The classes will run as smoothly as always! I will have lots of pictures of marine and sea life from the Mediterranean to share with the kids when I return. The ninth annual Around the World in White Rock, our multicultural festival, will be at
Piñon on March 18th. If you are interested in running a booth, or doing a performance,
please feel free to contact me. It’s never too early to plan our festival!
Thank you for the support, the volunteers, and over all good creative thoughts you send my way! It’s been a fabulous start to the school year! Creatively, Mrs. Stephanie Rittner Piñon Art Teacher

About Unity Day – Wednesday, October 23, 2019 - Wear Orange to School Day!
Together against bullying. UNITED for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.
Make it ORANGE and make it end! What are your true colors when it comes to showing that you believe that all youth should be safe from bullying? Come together in one giant ORANGE message of hope and support, WEAR AND SHARE ORANGE to color our nation, and even the world, visibly showing that our society believes that no child should ever experience bullying.
“ORANGE provides a powerful, visually compelling expression of solidarity,” said Paula Goldberg, Executive Director of PACER Center. “Whether it’s hundreds of individuals at a school wearing ORANGE, store owners offering ORANGE products, or a community changing a landmark to ORANGE, the vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, sending the supportive, universal message that bullying is never acceptable behavior.”

Box Tops for Education is a quick, easy, and FREE way to support Piñon Elementary.
All you have to do is check your grocery store items for the “Box Tops for Education”
seal (pictured above), clip them out, and bring them to the Piñon main office. You
can even send them with your kids if you don’t have time to stop by the office! The
PTO takes it from there. Each box top clipped earns $.10 for our school.
In case you’ve ever wondered exactly how much money we’ve earned, you can always
check out the Box Tops for Education webpage (boxtops4education.com). It’s easy to
search for Piñon.

they are. Here’s what you can do to help children develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:
Set the example. Let children see you read.

Piñon Library Makerspace
Our Library is a makerspace! The before school
program, and at times in library classes, we will
have a variety of makerspace activities for students
to explore. Students can do hands-on activities that
encourage creativity and learning. Makerspace
activities are classified as STREAM (science,
technology, reading, engineering, art, math)
activities. Additionally, the computer lab now houses
our school makerspace! If you are interested in
sharing your special maker skills with students,
please contact me or your student’s teacher.
