NORTH AMERICAN
PRECIS SYNDICATE
One in three people 50 years old or older has notbeen screened for colon can-cer, yet screening could helpsave their lives. This statisticis just one of the troublingfindings of a national study by the Colon Cancer Alli-ance, the leading nationalpatient advocacy organiza-tion dedicated to increasingcolon cancer screening ratesand survivorship, and QuestDiagnostics, the worldsleading diagnostic testingcompany. The two organi-zations recently teamed upto uncover the barriers thatprevent people from beingtested for colon cancer (also
known as colorectal cancer),the second-leading causeof cancer-related deaths inmen and women in the U.S.
Screening by colonos-copy, fecal immunochemi-cal tests and other methodshelps identify colon cancerin early stages when it is stillhighly treatable. For this rea-son, the American CancerSociety recommends screen-ing for every man and wom-an of average risk, beginningat age 50. African Americans, smokers and anyone whohas a family history or other
risk factors should be testedeven earlier. Yet the ColonCancer Alliance/Quest Di-agnostics study found thatmany people 50 and overare not being screened. Moreover, the barriers toscreening ranged from thelack of recommendation forscreening by a healthcareprofessional to time and costconstraints. The study alsosuggested that fear of the bowel preparation, side ef-fects and anesthesia typicallyassociated with colonoscopyare additional barriers.
Screening tests like acolonoscopy do a superbjob of catching colon cancerin early, treatable stages, said Jon R. Cohen, M.D.,senior vice president andchief medical officer, QuestDiagnostics. Unfortunately, some people refuse to un-dergo these proven tests because they find theminconvenient and unpleas-ant. Other individuals sim-ply do not understand thevalue of screening, in somecases because a healthcareprofessional has not talked
to them about it.The study also found tha
80 percent of respondentssaid theyd be more likely tobe screened if a convenien blood test were availableBlood tests that detect thDNA of colon cancer tumorsshed into the bloodstreaare available in the U.S. andEurope, but have yet to badopted into medical guide-lines for screening. QuesDiagnostics offers its Co-loVantage blood test to helpphysicians evaluate colocancer risk in patients whorefuse to undergo colonos-copy or other guideline-rec-ommended tests. A positivtest result requires furtheevaluation that may includcolonoscopy.
Any death from colocancer due to a failure toscreen is a tragedy that couldhave been prevented, said Andrew Spiegel, chief executive officer of the ColoCancer Alliance. I encour-age patients to talk to theihealthcare providers abouthe importance of colocancer screening, their risfactors for colon cancer, andthe different screening testsavailable. With increasedscreening rates, deaths frocolon cancer may one day ba thing of the past.
Colon cancer screening saves lives, but many people dont get tested

Happy Hew YearOnce again a new year is beginning. One could say that this is like re-incarnation on a smaller scale. Those who believe in this
concept of re-incarnation number more that 2/3 of the people on earth. The basic belief is that we live many life-times, each timeour spirit incarnates, we are born into a life in which we can learn lessons from the previous lifetime and consequently we becomemore spiritually advanced as we proceed from lifetime to lifetime. I am not about to debate this issue with anyone, but I want touse that concept as we think about the coming new year. Reflecting on the past year what can we learn? What would you do over?
Where can we improve?
We are just finishing 2011. So it is time for reflection. How did we do? I like to use a little memory device called FORMS. It refersto Family, Occupation, Recreation, Money, and Spiritual. Balance in each area will insure joy and happiness this year.
How is your Family? Did any one pass away? If so, how are you doing with grief? There are natural ways to deal with grief. Iseveryone healthy? What can we do to be Healthier? Any new births? What can we do to insure a long healthy life of that newchild? How are your relationships? Is everyone getting along? If not, fix it.
What about your Job? Work is extremely important. If you are employed how can you make the work better? If you are un-employed what are you looking for? You have a chance to find something new and interesting to do. Everyone needs somethingimportant to do. If you hate your job, it is very important to find another one. It is physically and emotionally damaging to do workthat you dislike.
What have you been doing for fun and recreation? Any Travel? Is your recreation restful and rejuvenating? What would you dodifferent? You have to plan ahead.
What about your Income? Does money cause stress in your life? It is important to not say, I cant afford it. Learn to say, Howcan I afford it? That gets your mind working to come up with new ideas about how to generate more money. If there is notenough, take some classes, learn to budget, and learn to get out of debt. Get a second job for a while.Learn to live on less than you earn. Save and invest. Money lessons are very important. What we do nowaffects our future.
How have things been Spiritually this year? Have you been learning and improving? Are you on the paththat you know you should be on? We all drift a little from time to time. It is important to look back to see ifwe have learned from the past and are going forward with better direction than before. It is time for newbeginnings.
Every New Year is an ending and a beginning. Evaluate your SELF. No one else really cares all thatmuch. We have to do this for our selves. What can we do next year, Physically, Mentally, Emotionally, andSpiritually to make our lives better. We need balance. All parts of our lives are equally important and weneed to constantly be evaluating and improving our selves so we can become the best we possibly can.
Make 2012 the Best Year Ever.
