Pioneer Middle SchoolAccelerated Curriculum Night
Our goal is to provide parents and students with the information they need to make an informed accelerated curriculum decision.
Enrolling your child into accelerated curriculum courses is a family commitment.
G.E.M.Great Explorations in Mathematics
The GEM Program is designed to accelerate students two years inmathematics. Since some students are already good technicians, they canfollow rules and apply those rules to routine exercises. GEM students needto go one step further, analyzing non-routine problems and digging beneaththe surface in order to see the beauty, elegance, and application of themathematics being learned.
Advanced Mathematics
• Very challenging and designed for students who are mathematically talented.
• By the end of middle school, students will be accelerated by one grade level.
• The middle school student will have the opportunity to complete high school Algebra I Honors in 8th grade.
• The student successfully completing the Algebra I Honors course will earn one high school mathematics credit when they enter 9th grade.
GEM Mathematics
• Extremely rigorous • Accelerated by two grade levels.
• 6th Grade – Pre-Algebra• 7th Grade – Algebra I Honors• 8th Grade – Geometry Honors
• Designed for mature, mathematically talented students. • Assignments are regularly given which may require many hours beyond
the school day to complete. • Students are continuously monitored and must maintain GEM criteria.• The student successfully completing the Algebra I Honors course and
Geometry Honors course will have two high school mathematics credits when they enter 9th grade.

Mathematics Progression
• If your child qualifies for the GEM program, you may select either:
• Advanced 6th Grade Math
• GEM-6 Math
• Both courses accelerate the student in mathematics, allowing them to eventually reach the highest levels of mathematics in high school; AP Calculus and AP Statistics.
G.E.M. 6 - Entrance Criteria
• Level 5 on Fifth Grade Math FSA (Minimum scale score 346)
• Level 4 on Fifth Grade Reading FSA(Minimum scale score 336)
• Teacher Recommendation
Meeting entrance criteria does not guarantee academic success.
G.E.M. Entrance Criteria
GEM-7• Successful completion of GEM-6 with a grade of B or higher
AND• Average of 75% or higher on district semester examinations
GEM-8 – (Geometry Honors)• Successful completion of GEM-7 with a grade of B or higher
AND• Average of 75% or higher on mid-term examination
AND• Passing score on the Algebra I End-of-Course Exam
G.E.M. Exit Criteria
• Any student who earns a C should be placed on probation. If the student receives a D or an F in the quarter after being placed on academic probation, they should be exited from the program.
• At the end of the school year, any student who does not have a course average of B or above and an average of 75% or higher on district semester examinations should be exited from the program.
• Any student who does not pass the State End-of Course Algebra or Geometry Exam should be exited from the program.

The Duke Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP)
• Duke TIP’s Seventh Grade Talent Search helps academically talented students identify their strengths, develop their abilities and interests, and celebrate their achievements.
• Students qualify for the 7th Grade Talent Search by scoring at or above the 95th percentile on the 6th grade Reading or Math FSA.
• Enrollment provides benefits that last through the end of high school, including the opportunity to take the ACT or SAT, specialized publications, college prep advice, and access to educational programs.
• 76 students qualified for the Duke TIP program in 2018-2019!
What can I do as a parent to help my child experience success in accelerated Mathematics?
• Place an emphasis on the process of learning and not on “answer- getting”.• Express the importance of Productive Struggle.• Do not share your negative beliefs about mathematics with your child.• Do not equate math with computation, but as problem-solving.• Reward efforts, not grades.• Do not attempt to oversimplify things.• Do not help them “too much”.
