This guide does not apply to clean room areas. 2.0 REFERENCES Pipe hangers and supports, materials and design shall be in accordance with MSS Standard Practices SP-58, SP-69, SP-89 and SP-90 and also conform to the latest requirements of the ANSI code for Pressure Piping B31.1 and Chemical, Petroleum Piping B31.3. 3.0 GENERAL 3.1 Temperature for the hangers and supports per this guide, except when otherwise specified or permitted, shall be within the pipe line fluid temperatures of -20° to +750° F. The parts of hangers and support in direct contact with the pipe shall be considered to be at the temperature of the pipe line fluid. Parts not in direct contact with the pipe or entirely outside of any insulation may be considered to be at 1/3 of the pipe line fluid or at ambient temperature, whichever is greater. 3.2 Hanger and Support Loads as follows shall be used in determining the weight to be supported or the forces to be resisted: 3.2.1 Weight Effects: Dead Load - Weight of all permanent loads (pipe, valves, insulation, etc.) Live Load - Weight of the conveyed fluid including snow and ice where applicable. Test Load - Weight of test fluid. For fluids lighter than water, the weight of water shall be used. 3.2.2 Dynamic Effects Impact forces, shall include vibration, and the greater of either, wind or earthquake forces. The weight or forces to be taken by the hangers and supports shall be the most severe combination of weight and dynamic effects. 1.0 SCOPE

This guide covers the selection and design of hangers and supports for process and utility piping. This guide does not apply to clean room areas.

2.0 REFERENCES

3.0 GENERAL

3.1 Temperature for the hangers and supports per this guide, except when otherwise specified or permitted, shall be within the pipe line fluid temperatures of -20° to +750° F. 3.0 GENERAL, continued

(particularly on laboratory buildings) on the supporting structure (building steel, etc.) shall receive consideration. Where vibration is deemed to be of particular concern, Grinnell Series 300 Springloaded hangers shall be used.

3.2.3 Slide Surfaces

All piping supports and guides having steel to steel sliding surfaces shall have liberal coating of graphite paste applied during installation. Where pipe supports or guides rest on concrete, sliding contact shall be achieved by imbedding a slide plate in the concrete and lubricating as above. Sliding contact between concrete and steel is prohibited.

3.3 Materials

Hangers, spacers, small plates, lugs, etc. may be commercial quality carbon steel provided these items are not subjected to temperatures over 650°F. Grinnell Co. materials are considered as being a representative of the required quality. The use of other suppliers' materials of equal quality shall be considered. Grinnell figure numbers are used in all following pages of this guide. Note that where copper lines are installed, either copper hangers or plastic tape-lined steel hangers shall be used.

4.0 USE OF THE GUIDE

4.1 Procedure

4.1.1 Using the PH, PA, PG or PS number corresponding to the hanger or support selected, reference shall be made to pages 4-28 for recommendations.
