Welcome to October on Fort Myers Beach! This month is many Islanders’ favorite month. Our island version of ‘fall’ is in the air (meaning the temperatures typically only reach 85 degrees instead of 95, and the humidity drops to more human levels) and the excitement of pirates and pumpkins fills the air. Pirate Festival will be held on Columbus Day weekend (October 7-9) and this family-friendly event in it’s 11th year continues to rise in popularity with more fun things scheduled than ever before – including a special ‘Love on the High Seas’ vow renewal ceremony and pirate wedding. Arrrr! October is also the month that some fun island events that occur only during season return to the monthly roster: the Caribbean Cruise-In Car Show will be back at Parrot Key on October 4, the Fort Myers Beach Art Association’s Fall Member Show begins on October 12 – and the gallery hours change to the daily winter schedule and activities at Shell Point Village and the Beach Library begin to ramp up.

There are two events scheduled for October that are designed to teach people about sustaining our natural fish stocks: On October 20, the Friends of the Arts host a unique event called ‘Southwest Florida Sustains’, where Islanders and visitors will have a chance to sample sustainable seafood from local restaurants. On October 23, Jack’s Farm to Fork at Pink Shell Resort will host a ‘trash fish’ dinner – featuring savory selections from seafood normally tossed back by local fishermen. Also be sure to get in the fall mood by celebrating Halloween, island-style: for families, there is the popular Fright Night at Bay Oaks on October 21, and Trunk or Treat at Beach Baptist on October 31. For older ghouls and goblins, the annual Zombie Pub Crawl is scheduled for October 28, and local watering holes will be hosting fun, festive costume contests on Halloween night. Pirates, goblins, zombies and cooler temperatures – Happy October!

Meet Yur Pirates, Arrr!

Soon a variety of color-ful characters will be found roam-ing San Carlos Blvd during this year’s Pirate Festival. This event attracts talent from as far as the four winds blow – check out the following bios and see how many you can meet during the event.

BELINDA HADCOCK, EVENT ORGANIZER

A lifelong resident of Southwest Florida, Belinda Had-cock grew up on the shores of the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Her love of acting, theatrical make up and costumes emerged early on when she discovered Halloween, which soon became her favor-ite holiday. In 1993, while visit-ing friends in Kenosha, WI and looking for something to do, Be-linda happened upon the Bristol Renaissance Faire; as soon as she entered the gates, she knew she was home. Over time, Re-naissance Faires translated into Pirate Festivals as she blended her theatrical background with her natural ease on the water to create her own unique Pirate Per-sona. Belinda has been a key part of the Fort Myers Beach Pirate Festival since it began in 2006, and accepted the role of Entertainment Director in 2012. Her roots in the Pirate Community make her a natural fit for this position, and her leader-ship has expanded the festival to include more participation by local merchants as well as members of the surrounding community. Be-linda also owns Skeleton Crew Entertainment, which offers live

pirate-themed events throughout the region.

What better way to en-joy October’s cooler temperatures than by listening to some smokin’ hot blues? And lucky for Fort My-ers Beach, a Florida blues legend performs regularly on neighboring San Carlos Island at the beautiful-ly restored Dixie Fish House – a building that’s a legend in its own right. It is there, on Sunday after-noons with the glistening waters of the back bay as a backdrop, that Joey Gilmore works his mag-ic and leaves the crowd begging for more. Born in Ocala, Florida in 1944, Joey Gilmore’s love affair with the guitar began in his teens. “In the town that I lived in, there was a barbershop,” Gilmore said. “And the barber that owned the shop was a sanctified preacher. He was a minister, and he had this little flat-bodied guitar. It was electric, no amplifier to it. And he would bring it to the shop with him, and he was trying to learn how to play. So, I would get to the barbershop early whenever I would go to get my hair cut, or even after school, I would hang around at the barbershop, be-cause I wanted to get my hands on that guitar. I would take the gui-tar and they had these old wood-en benches. I would lay the guitar

on top of the wooden bench and when you would strum the strings, the wood, the bench, would vi-brate, and the floor would, the sound would resonate, and you could hear it without the amplifier. I learned just from watching him.” Young Gilmore tried to keep his obsession with the instru-ment from his church-going aunt, who was raising him, but word of the talented boy who played at the barbershop eventually got back to her and it wasn’t long before it got to everyone else, too, and

Joey’s church-based band began playing secular music and often performed in places where they were too young to legally enter. Gilmore moved to south Florida in the 1960’s, where he quickly be-came a popular addition to the lo-cal blues scene and began a long touring career that would take him all over the United States and Eu-rope. Over the last 50 years of his career, Gilmore has shared the stage with such greats as

James Brown, Etta James, Bob-by Bland, Little Milton, Johnny Taylor and numerous others. In January 2006, Gilmore won one of the most distinguished and in-ternationally coveted awards in all of blues - The International Blues Challenge. In 2008 Joey Gilmore was awarded the Blewzzy award for best song, “Blues All Over You’. In 2015 he was honored with Latin World Talent Lifetime Achievement Award. Now firmly ensconced as a Florida legend, Joey Gilm-ore provides a highlight at Blues Festivals and night clubs all over the world as one of the best soul-blues and R&B singers in the business. A true blues and R&B master, Gilmore incorporates new and varied styles in his music – performing original compositions mixed with traditional standards in a high-energy show reminis-cent of the great Blues legends of the ‘40’s and ‘50’s that really gets people up on their feet. Islanders can catch this blues legend at the Dixie Fish House on October 9 and 23rd and be sure to bring your dancing shoes!

His Excellency, Lord Sir Henry Hyde, Lord Governor Plenipotentiary of Her Majes-ty’s Colonies in the New World. He is a gentile British aristocrat, whose position has made him the richest and most powerful man in the colonies. He is as cultured and charming with his friends as he is dangerous and lethal to his enemies. His policy on pirates is “Hang ‘em from the highest yard-arm!”, if they are not in posses-sion of a letter of marque from the Crown, that is. Lord Hyde is portrayed by Timothy Fraley, a classical-ly trained Shakespearean actor with over 35 years of experience delighting audiences with his per-sonal interactive improvisational style. THE SKELETON PIRATE

The years in question

are 1712 to 1725. Pirates rule the sea. Captain Jack Quint sailed these blue-green waters of Southwest Florida alongside some of the greatest known Pi-rates in history. Based in and around the barrier islands of what is now known as Ft. Myers Beach & Estero Bay, he was responsi-ble for the capture of hundreds of vessels, and was feared on land, as well as at sea. He and his crew plundered millions in gold, silver, weapons, women and anything else of value, and killed merci-lessly. Born in December of 1690, Jack Quint quickly learned the ways of the seas from his fa-ther, also a Pirate. In October of 1725, a devastating Hurricane came ashore the entire Gulf Coast of Florida, beaching parts of the rig-gings of his personal ship. The true cause of Quint’s death remains unknown, but it is feared he was sunk in this massive storm, just offshore of where the Ft. Myers Beach Pier stands. Sightings of an undead skeletal figure, that match his de-scription have been reported nu-merous times over the past 100 years on the beaches of South-west Florida...

A Field Guide to Florida: Florida Fighting Conch Florida Fighting Conchs are one of the great shell finds that anyone can discover on Fort Myers Beach. In fact I’ve seen many people taking empty conch shells off the beach. Even I have two conch shells on my desk as I’m writing this article. The Florida Fighting Conch shell grows to 4 to 5 inches long. Most people only think about the conch shell forgetting that, in fact, that shell was at one point home to a snail. At the front of the shell, there are two areas where the edge pinches upwards, allowing the eye stalks of the fighting conch to peek out, while the rest of its body is safe inside the shell. So while most people think that this point on the shell is the back, in fact it’s the front. Conchs (and all other snails for that matter) crawl around on one long foot, while all of its squishy vital organs are tucked away safely in its shell. Its foot also has a sharp, serrated spike to defend itself. They also have an operculum, which grows on the Fighting Conch’s back. It serves as a trapdoor to close the opening of the shell when the snail decides to pull its head, tail, and eye stalks into the protective shell. If in a real bind they use the hardened tip of their operculum, to push themselves forward in a hopping motion called a ‘strombid leap’. This movement helps the conch make a quick escape from predators as well as breaking up their scent trail. The juvenile conchs will bury

themselves in the sand for the majority of their first year of life, possibly as a means

to avoid being eaten. Full-grown adults will bury themselves as well to hide during the day, but they will come back out at night to eat. Florida Fighting Conchs only eat algae. Although this makes for a bit of a bland diet, this helps the sea grass ecosystem that they live in tremendously. By eating the algae they help keep the algae in check in the sea grass beds, as algae can smother sea grass and kill it. It eats the algae by using its radula, a rough sandpaper-like tongue inside its proboscis (even though it looks like an elephant trunk, it’s a mouth, I promise). With this it can scrape algae off of sand, rocks, and sea grass. Florida Fighting Conchs make their homes from North Carolina to the east coast of Mexico and in the Gulf Coast up to Texas. After periods of intense winds or wave action, hundreds of Florida Fighting Conch can be found washed onshore. So whenever a storm rolls through the Island go and take a look outside after the storm to see these snails up close. Put please don’t bring them home with you. Taking empty shells is fine. However, taking home the live snails involves state fines and is not good for the snails at all - so please leave them on the beach.

From 6-9pm, the large parking area at Beach Baptist Church will be transformed into a Halloween wonderland, all free and open to the public. There will be a Bounce House, concessions, music and more. Check out all the colorfully decorated trunks and have a spooktacular good time!

For those readers who have grown up but still love Halloween, there’s fun for you this Halloween. Even if trick or treating is no longer an option, there are places on the island that are synonymous with Hal-loween. Dress up in style and get ready to party as The Cot-tage – now famous for all things Halloween - is hosting an event

in honor of what is - for many of us - the best holiday of the season. On Monday, October 31st, the Cottage will hold it’s 30th Annual Halloween Bash with ghoulish drink and dinner specials and their popular cos-tume contest! Winners are an-nounced at midnight with cash and gift certificate prizes for 1st and 2nd place individual and group winners. Many more favorite hot spots will be hosting Hal-loween events and were work-ing out the details at press time, so keep an eye on the Sand Paper to get the low down on everything ghoul.

GENERAL COMMENTS:There’s no getting around it - we’re gonna need some time to gear up for the coming election in November! This month I’m feeling a lot of non-harmonic frequencies swirling around in everybody’s mental dust bins, getting ready to be caught up by any passing hot air and scattered around the neighborhood. Don’t you just hate it when people do that? No! Not you - the other guy. With this in mind, this month’s predictions should lead you sufficiently astray.

LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 23)(Said in the whiny voice of Andy Rooney) Don’t you hate it when you get up in the morning and the sun’s already beat you to the coffee. It’s like every step you take is just one step too late. You try catching up by moving faster, but then you end up tripping over the cat. Nobody gets hurt, but this is the moment that you go, “Whoa. What the hell?” And at that moment, you realize what just happened, and a whole lot more. You become god-like. But only for a moment. Then it all goes back to normal. If this doesn’t happen to you this month it should have.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 - Nov 21) Getting a word in edgewise is sometimes like trying to peel the security seal off a childproof bottle, What do they seal that with anyway? Admonishing yourself for having cut your nails you finally resort to forcing your finger into the hole. But since you were squeezing it so hard with your other hand, the bottle almost flies out of your hands. Luckily a cotton ball prevented all the pills from flying around the room. I assume that’s why it’s stuffed with cotton in the first place. Anyway, when you do try to get a word in edgewise don’t be surprised if you end up getting ‘cotton mouth.’ It’s all just part of the conspiracy.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 - Dec 21)Decisions, decisions, decisions. Usually that’s preceded by several, real choices. But what to do when it’s preceded by a bunch of illogical alternate universes? Like, you were just going through Life, having a good old time, and suddenly a swarm off gnat-like alternate realities buzz bombs your face. Why, in situations like this, do we always reflexively swat back at these ‘gnats’? Try not to swat at these decisions so much this month. They don’t call them “No-See-Ems” for nothing.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19)You know, there are a lot of ‘illogics’ floating around the universe these days. They’re like a flock of grackles sitting on the phone lines, trying to figure out which way to fly. Everyone of them is speaking a different language, but when one of them flies they all gotta fly. Hey, even schools of fish do that, don’t they? There’s a natural ebb and flow going through the universe. You’ll be especially tuned in to it this month. Well, except it’s all a bunch of illogics. So then, by the law of averages, all things considered, you therefore should have a better month. If that makes any sense.

AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)Ever notice when you’re sitting at home sometimes you find yourself focusing on sounds far way. On the beach that usually means someone’s singing karaoke somewhere, at least in my neighborhood. It’s what’s called a Wave-Variant Modulation of a Fifth Dimensional Frequency. The source point is the karaoke singer. Unexpected consequences occur, and a neighbor, minding his own business, sitting in his house, is impacted by these sound waves in strange ways. The source doesn’t even know it’s happening. Every time it happens to you this month buy a lottery ticket. Play the frequency number.

PISCES (FEB 19 - MARCH 20) We know that your symbol is fishes, but there is also a north Ireland dialect where ‘pisces’ means ‘pieces’. Astrological scientists delved into this and discovered that when pronounced in that Irish dialect Pisces is represented by the true symbol of fish in pieces, or sushi. The Irish, of course, hate sushi … or so we’re led to believe. There have been reports of secret cults who worship under the sushi symbol. This just might be the month for you to have some sushi, and delve a little deeper into your sign. Just, please - no single malts with your sushi.

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)The sound of one person clapping sometimes comes off as sarcastic. Two people is a little awkward, especially in a crowd. It’s like you’re waiting for something to happen. But when the crowd bursts into applause suddenly everything is alright. Unless it’s like 10,000 people applauding. Then it gets a bit overwhelming. So, what does this have to do with your prediction? Heck if I know. Maybe you’re only supposed to clap when everyone else is clapping (always awkward being the only one, right?). Just make sure you’re not in a crowd of 10,000 when it starts. You’re no lemming.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)Wouldn’t a cup of tea taste good right now? Sure it would. Go fill up your favorite tea cup with hot water. No, don’t grab a tea bag. That’s for dilettantes. Concoct it yourself. Make something up. Don’t forget the honey! Always best to end with honey. Just like a good conversation - end with some honey. Hope you were making a cup of tea along with me. Not just reading this, like a spectator. Cause ‘spectator’ sorta rhymes with ‘tator’, and by ‘tator’ we mean couch p’tater. And that’s not you, right? Course not.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 21)Ever wonder what they mean by ‘radio waves from outer space’? Nobody ever really tells you where they’re coming from or what kind of music format is playing. Is it country, rock, techno or just the weather? Scientists tell you they come from the stars. Okay, say you’re Koreshan and believe we’re inside a giant globe. That means these frequencies we’re picking up are our own, reflecting back at us. Kinda like the thoughts running around in our heads. “Where the heck did THAT come from?” you think, when a stray thought hits you. If that happens try this: Hold your nostrils and blow it out your ears. Do it lightly though - you may need that thought later.

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 22)There will be more people in your life this month. Don’t bother counting them; just believe your perception that there are more. Biologists with scientific degrees have discovered in Andalusian mice the ability to operate their bodies instinctively. The mice have no written language, nor are they aware of mathematics in any form other than food. Why they’re studying mice I have no idea, but there are some similarities between mice and men. When they see food they don’t think first. They run for the food first. That’s instinctual certainty. We have it too. Beware tailgate parties this month.

LEO (JULY 23 - AUG. 22) Ever been around big, honking church bells pealing on a beautiful Sunday morning? That sound rings in the Day of Rest and worship. By raise of hands - how many of you have experienced this? Hmm, exactly half of you have or have not. The Haves and the Have Nots. Civilizations defined, by bells pealing. Okay, that’s a bunch of hogwash, right? You’re a Leo - you know better. Church bells ringing is just that, and a civilization … it ain’t that! You’re a meat and potatoes kinda person (and if you’re a vegetarian it’s because you only eat animals that are vegetarians). Be more yourself this month. Or as much as your spouse lets you.
