The memory of a place
The Pyrenees, Catalonia’s spinal column, boasts an extensive and valuable architec-tural and cultural heritage.
A source of inspiration for writers and pain-ters, and cradle of an ancient culture, they
conceal Romanesque churches, monaste-ries, castles, archaeological complexes andmediaeval towns, along with some fifty mu-
seums. Sacred sanctuaries of great beauty, places of worship and stones imbued with history.
The Romanesque architectural style shines in its own right and no better example can be found than the set of churches found in
Vall de Boí, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The area is brimming with extremely valuable architectural jewels,
such as the monasteries of Santa Maria de Ripoll or Sant Pere de Roda, the abbey of Santa Maria de Gerri, in Gerri de la Sal, the church of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà,
Solsona Cathedral or the church of Santa Maria d’Arties in Val d’Aran...
Vestiges that bear witness to the passage of time lost in memory, at the birth of Catalonia’s history. The art of every period
can be felt everywhere. Just relax your eyes and savour it.

/ 23 /
Celebrating character
Customs and traditions come together following the cycle of the seasons in an expression of living culture crammed with legends, feasts, dances, songs and popular festivals. Coinciding with
solstices and equinoxes, religious in nature or with pagan roots, festive occasions and gathe-rings have over time contributed to forging the special character of the towns in the Pyrenees.
Sardana dances, revetlles (celebrations on the eve of saint feast days), parading groups of giant
figures and devils, children’s shows and feasts bring families together to celebrate in style.
From the flying sparks and gunpowder of the Patum de Berga (a festival dating back to mediaeval times and declared a Masterpiece of
the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO), the Crema d’Eth Haro (the burning of a fir tree trunk in the town square) in Les and Arties or the blazing falles (torches) of Alta Riba-
gorça to celebrate the festival of Sant Joan... to the high jinks of Solsona Carnival; the descent of the raiers (river rafters) on the Noguera Pallaresa
river; the Catalan sheepdog trials in Llavorsí, Ribes de Freser and Castellar de n’Hug; the Tura Festival in Olot and the Casament de Pagès (Country
Wedding) in Ripoll, among many other festivities.
Conscientious and hard-working in everyday life, but enthusiastic and welcoming when it comes to festivals, the Pyrenees are full of traditions and reflect the essence of authentic country life.

Nature and palate
The gastronomic wealth of the Pyrenees makes it a pleasure to sit at the table and sample the mountain cuisine: game, wild mus-hrooms, cheeses from cow and sheep milk, cured sausages...
Pyrenean cuisine gets the very most out of local produce, using the knowledge passed down through generations to surprise even the most demanding palates. Veal from the
Catalan Pyrenees (with denomination of origin protected status), free-range chicken, lamb, river trout, pâtés, sea and mountain rice dishes, escudella i carn d’olla (pasta broth
followed by stewed meat and vegetables), olla aranesa (Aranese stew) or trinxat (mashed vegetables) and tomato-rubbed bread… Dis-hes that incorporate influences of the nearby
Mediterranean and of the high mountain, with superb seasoning and accompanied by excellent wines with denomination of origin protected status.
A cuisine with ancient recipes, prepared patiently over a low heat. A combination of strong flavours and powerful aromas. Fregi-nats (fried organ meats), trinxats (vegetable mashes) and sweet and sour dishes can be
sampled at a large number of fairs and shows throughout the year.

Historical crossroads
To discover the real Pyrenees you have to go beyond the traditional stereotypes.
Sometimes is it necessary to go off the beaten path to find new surprises around each corner. Criss-crossing trails and links between the mountain and the plain. A land
full of character with plenty of routes to explore it from top to bottom. One thousand kilometres along the GR 11, the star of the
southern Pyrenees, along the GR 211, fullof history in its role of connecting the people of Val d’Aran, along the GR 107, which follows the old route of the Cathars, along
the so-called Camí dels Bons Homes (Road of Good Men), or along the GR 92, which starts in Portbou and contains long
coastline stretches, many of which use the old camins de ronda (coastal footpaths).
Walking for the joy of it through history and nature along the many sign-posted trails that can be found in the natural parks. And if you prefer pedalling to walking, there are
special cycle touring routes that follow the old cog railway line: the greenway of Vall Fosca, right next to the Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the
Cog Railway Route, the Iron Route or the Coal Route.

The contoursof the territory
From Cap de Creus to Val d’Aran, each and every town has its own personality.
The high mountains in Catalonia constitute an open area whose towns boast physical differences and diversity in terms of econo-
mic history but also a common denominator: their character.
Cities and towns with a splendid past that are still market and trading centres today where their inhabitants gather.
Counties that have been directly involved in industrial activity since the 18th century and others that have developed as agricultural areas until the arrival of tourism, which has
become their economic mainstay and is very wide-ranging in nature.
A heterogeneous mosaic that blurs the county boundaries and at the same time brings them under the same umbrella: the Catalan Pyrenees.
