Non-Technical Summary Alba Archaeology (Highland) Ltd was commissioned by Adrian Laycock Ltd in November 2011 to undertake an archaeological desktop and walkover survey for a proposed hydro-electric development at Pitmain Estate, Kingussie, Inverness-shire (NH 7339/0527 to NH 7552/0238). Highland Council Historic Environment Team produced a specification for this work. The walkover survey was conducted on 17-19 November 2011 and revealed a few unrecorded archaeological features to the area around Pitmain Lodge to include clearance cairns, head-dyke, buildings and a possible enclosure, as well as a dam and former powerhouse, and water tank for Pitmain House. A number of recommendations have been proposed.

1. INTRODUCTION An archaeological desktop and walkover survey was carried out by Alba Archaeology (Highland) Ltd on behalf of Adrian Laycock Ltd in regard of supporting information required as part of a planning application for a hydro-electric scheme. The development site is a ‘greenfield’ site located around the area of Pitmain Lodge, Kingussie, Highland. The work was conducted as part of planning ref. 11/003121/FUL of Highland Council Planning Department. A specification for the work was supplied to the client by the Highland Council Historic Environment Team (see Appendix 1). 2. BACKGROUND The site is located northwest of the existing public road to the Northwest of Kingussie. Access to the pipeline route is gained from the existing access track to the North of Pitmain Lodge, with an existing track to the proposed powerhouse 1 and dam. The development site is a ‘greenfield’ site within an area of ground comprised mostly of heather moorland, with some rough grazing and scrub woodland to the south of the scheme. Past archaeological work has been conducted to the adjacent house to the NE of the current development in the form of a desktop and walkover survey undertaken by the author in 2009 (Farrell 2009) which revealed no archaeological features. Survey work by the RCAHMS in 1995 (RCAHMS 2005) to the ground close to the development area recorded a number of sheilings (sites 1 and 3) as part of a wider pre-afforestation survey around Kingussie. A survey of maps held in the National Library of Scotland, indicates that the development site is indicated on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1872 as an area of open moorland with a possible building and 2 enclosed fields and the township of Toman an t-Seomair. Almost the same is shown on the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey map of 1903. Later OS maps from 1967 show Lodge and House but not named. Early historical maps do not provide enough detail for the development area, though Roy does show the land to the East of Loch Gynack to be under cultivation.

3. METHODOLOGY The archaeological survey was conducted on areas where any new sub-surface ground works were to be carried out ie intake chambers, pipeline routes, powerhouse, dam and associated works and access roads. A wayleave of c12m wide was made to each side of the proposed pipeline and the route of each access track, areas of works and proposed contractors yard were walked by 2 persons. Walkover was conducted on 17th and 19th of November 2011 in fair weather. Grid references onsite were obtained using a Garmin II GPS using OS data.

5. DISCUSSION The archaeological survey conducted on this site revealed an unrecorded farmstead of 2 buildings and the possible associated remains of a head-dyke or which may relate to another farmstead and clearance cairns of a post-medieval date and separate features relating to Pitmain House (lodge, house, dam, tank, powerhouse) which probably were all built in 1913. 6. RECOMMENDATIONS It is recommended that prior to construction works, that the following be undertaken: - The sites identified around Pitmain House (site 10) be fenced off prior to

commencement of construction works with detailed recording of site; Excavation and recording to be undertaken on the head-dyke from the edge of the existing borrow pit to the area of the Dam as this is likely to be affected by the works.

- Detailed plan being made of the dam (site 11) before its removal. 7. REFERENCES Farrell, S (2009) Report of Archaeological Desktop & Walkover Survey Pitmain, Kingussie.
