International Day of UN Peacekeepers 2014
UN Peacekeeping: A Force for the Future • USGs of DPKO-DFS have approved a campaign to support the 2014
UN Peacekeeping priorities of modernization and efficiency, harnessing the global attention provided PK Day on 29 May.
• 'UN Peacekeeping: A Force for Peace. A Force for Change. A Force the Future‘ aims to build political and public support for UN Peacekeeping operations
• Specifically to raise awareness among the: – Peacekeeping partnership (TCCs, PCCs & FCCs, policy makers,
academics and NGOs) that: UN Peacekeeping is modernizing, with an emphasis on innovation (new tools and approaches) and delivering value for money;
– Broader informed public that:
Today’s peacekeeping is a vastly different operation to its original conception. For the communities we serve, UN Peacekeepers are a force for peace, for change and for a better future.
UN Peacekeeping: A Force for the Future Messaging global level
– Slogan: ‘UN Peacekeeping is a force for peace. A force for change. A force for
the future.’ – UN Peacekeeping is modernizing to ensure it is a force ready for tackle today’s
and tomorrow’s peace and security challenges – UN Peacekeepers are a force for a better future for the communities we serve
Messaging currently being developed on four priority areas:
– Prioritizing innovation and technology to tackle new challenges Examples include ‘Innovation and technology taskforce; UUAVs; low tech eg cell phone use for protection
– New ways of working with others Examples include partnerships with ECOWAS, ECCAS, IGAD,
– Achieving efficiency and value for money Examples include reduction of per capita costs for peacekeepers; digging for water in Mali;
– New approaches to ensure peacekeeping is flexible and dynamic Examples include the Force Intervention Brigade, public –private sector partnerships for field support
Messaging at a local level
– Missions and UNICs encouraged to develop messaging to support the campaign in their markets as appropriate,
Timing
• Launch of the campaign for Peacekeepers Day 29 May
• Unlike previous themes, this marks the start of a long running
campaign (from May to October)
• Activities are still being added to the programme. We want more ideas from missions and UNICs.
Some key moments and activities
May 22 Multimedia campaign launch for the International Day of UN Peacekeepers using the theme ‘A Force for Peace. A Force for Change. A Force for the Future’
Mid-May UN Foundation launch of the annual ‘Thank a peacekeeper’ campaign. PAS to seek cross promotion and tie in with ‘A Force for Future’.
Late May Launch of the expert panel on innovation and technology
May 25-29
Media outreach for UN Peacekeepers Day with international and UN media outlets.
29 May Op-ed ‘A Force for the Future’ by USG Ladsous; including launch of USG Huffington Post account.
29 May USGs attend events for the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, including guest at the spokesperson’s noon briefing, and photo-op at NASDAQ tower
Early June
DPET organised panel discussion ‘Women: a Force for the Future’
June / July
USGs take part in Twitter and Weibo chats with general public
August Expert panel on technology and innovation regional seminar
15 Sept Media outreach for the transfer of authority in CAR
21 Sept International Day of Peace: PAS to seek cross promotion of ‘A Force for the Future’ messaging, including at the Peace One Day music concert in Goma.
Mid Sept Start of 69th General Assembly: UN Peacekeeping to consider hosting a side event.
Mid Sept Op-ed ‘Global contribution for global peace’ by USG Ladsous highlighting the contributions of Member States (TCCs/PCCs/FCCs) to the partnership of UN Peacekeeping.
Late Sept USGs take part in a panel discussion on technology and peacekeeping at the Social Good Summit.
Early October
USGs invited to the UN Foundation ‘Thank a Peacekeeper’ closing event, receiving letters of thanks and participating in ‘A Force for the Future’ themed panel discussion.

What we need from you
• For the campaign – Share mission stories that support the ideas of the campaign (can
be low tech or high tech) – Flag the people that are behind these stories to be interviewed – Content to go on the innovation map
(eg UNMIL mobile courts, MINUSMA robots for demining, UNMISS waste management engineers)
– Local activities / events to support the campaign
• On PK Day (whether you use the theme or not)
– Tell us what your mission is doing – Flag mission web or social media content to be promoted – Send us photos of your events
