Dear Parents:
As the beautiful fall colors
paint a beautiful sunset on
Carver’s Westside, I am con-
tented to let you know that
there are still lots of good
things going on at Carver.
Yes, 8th grade completed
their Boat Project with tedi-
ous work put into it. Our stu-
dents are graced with such
work ethics, collaboration
and the menial tasks of de-
sign, multitasking and the
focus on results was such a
humbling experience for a
teacher and administrator.
I should not forget the 7th
graders and their shelter pro-
jects. Benevolence and team-
work created some NICE
waterproof shelters. Al-
though the shelters ranged
from mole hills to tall cathe-
dral teepees, again it por-
trayed project team work and
results. As the beauty of the
project lies in the eye of the
beholder, I must say it was a
sight to behold.
Yes, don’t forget the Dance
December 10, at Carver
7:00pm -9:00pm.
Principals’ Honor list
amounted to approximately
150 students. Fantastic!
These students enjoyed their
special treat to Incredible
Pizza
We had the Veterans’ Day
Assembly and had the pleas-
ure of a WW II veteran Mr.
Aldret as a guest speaker.
Leadership classes, Choir
Classes and Band classes di-
rected the entire program.
The program was organized
and reverent.
Tulsa Audubon is celebrating
its 75th Anniversary, and we
were treated to a special per-
formance of Adventures
with Audubon starring Brian
“Fox” Ellis who is one of
America’s greatest naturalist
and artist. Listening to his
tales of adventure in a rich
French accent enflamed with
the wildness of nature’s song
was breathtaking. Thank you,
Ms. Duvall for setting this up
for Carver.
Enjoy the fall and remember
to Fall into a Book with your
children, as I will do the
same with about three books.
Fall into a Book as the Win-
ter break approaches.

Volunteers Needed for
PTSA Spring Fundraiser
REALLY!
We need parent volunteers for our spring fundraiser. We need helpers to solicit donations, organize performances, manage the international bazaar, clean up and more. Know somebody who owns a restaurant? Love to work directly with the kids? Enjoy baking? Handy with decora-tions? Remember a great idea from your stu-dent's elementary school fundraisers? We'll take any of these skills and whatever else you've got! Will you please help make this event a success? We promise to keep in-person meetings short and do most correspondence via email or phone calls.
We need volunteers to step up before winter break, so please contact committee co-chairs Stephanie Walston at
918/592-3431 or [email protected] or
Cari Bashaw at 918/698-1001 or [email protected].

Carver PTSA - Nominating Committee
It is hard to believe but it is already time to begin looking for PTSA Officers and Committee Chairs for next year. The nominating comit-tee will form at the February PTSA meeting and will be tasked with coming up with a slate of officers for next year. If you are interested in being on the committee or would like to be involved in PTSA next year, please let us know. PTSA is a great way to get involved at Carver. Please contact Karen Bruns ([email protected]) if you have questions or are interested in helping out. We have a lot of officers/chairs who are 8th grade parents and we are excited to welcome new parents with new ideas. Please consider getting involved next year.

Football Notes from Ms. Deana Holt: The end of football season is always hard for me. I
miss the time spent at practice and games; I miss the parents and our visits. We ended the season with a banquet at Carver. That was one of my best ideas. Yeah, turn in equipment and have dinner - equip-ment wasn’t stacked all over my classroom! Well, more like it was thrown in the store room. (I’m afraid to open the door.)
We recognized all A students with a plaque and A/B Honor Roll students with a medal. It was awesome to recognize 8 players with straight A’s and 31 with A’s and B’s. I doubt any other school could boast as I can about having 39 Honor Roll players. Thanks to Coach Myers for supervising study hall every day. The Tomlinson family provided snacks for the football study hall kids. Joi McCondichie took over the snacks the last half of the season. I can’t thank them enough for the time and effort they spent making sure the players had something healthy in their stomachs before practice. Joni Schnoor spent hours making corsages, hats, and mittens for Homecoming, and Cheer and Dance members and their parents spent numerous hours making posters and candy bags. Thanks to everyone that helped make it a memorable event. A special thank you to Janet Duvall for the unique glass-blown footballs for me and the coaches!
My chain crew were always ready to carry those markers up and down the field - can’t beat that on-the-field view of the game. I cannot begin to mention everyone by name, but thanks for all of your help to make the 2010 football season a BIG success. I will miss the 8th grade parents and the countless hours we have spent together for the last 3 years. I wish them luck in High School, and remember Carver is always here. See you at Homecoming 2011!

Carver’s Student Council Members Travel to Moore,
Oklahoma for the 2010 Leadership Conference.
On November 9th, Carver held its
annual Veteran's Day Assem-
bly. Sgt. Knox's Leadership
classes handled all of the introduc-
tions, and the Color Guard did a
very nice job Posting the Colors.
Our guest speaker, Mr. Paul An-
dert of Tulsa, shared his stories
from being in the military during
WWII. Mr. Andert was involved
in a number of major battles in
the war, including the landing on
Omaha Beach on D-Day 1944.
Mr. Andert has published a couple
of books on his experiences and
was kind enough to donate copies
to the CMS library. The Carver
orchestra also did a wonderful job
with music, and Mrs. Frakes’ 8th
grade ensemble of young ladies
Brantley was driving one of the
Stryker vehicles that entered
Kuwait during that final draw-
down phase. He shared pictures
he took in Iraq with the stu-
dents. PFC Brantley talked to
the students about his “Heroes,”
the men and women who serve
our country everyday. He also
told the students it is important
for them to work hard in school
and to get a college education.
Many students have been in-
spired to write letters to our ser-
vice men and women thanking
them for their commitment to
our freedom. PFC Brantley is
the son of Mrs. Teresa Smith
(6th grade, CMS English).
performed a very moving med-
ley of songs. Our Carver stu-
dents made a great impression
on Mr. Andert, who has spoken
at many of the schools in the
Tulsa area. He wrote a nice let-
ter to the editor of the Tulsa
World about how respectful the
students were and what a great
job we had done with the assem-
bly. Way to go, Wildcats!
The students were also given a
presentation by PFC Brantley
with the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd
Infantry Division, who was the
last combat unit to serve during
Iraqi Freedom. In August, we
watched the news as the last
combat unit made the 400-plus,
mile trip out of Iraq. PFC

6th and 7th grade students were treated to an Assem-bly by Brian “Fox” Ellis. He gave a “Chautauqua” presentation of John James Audubon. John James Audubon traveled North America in the early 1900’s and drew pictures of birds and mammals to docu-ment all the beautiful wildlife throughout the United States. There are Audubon societies throughout the United States today, named in honor of his work with depicting wildlife.
Brian “Fox” Ellis held the students’ attention with humorous tales, pictures and educational activi-ties. He also conducted a writing class in which the students wrote poems, haikus and diamantes using birds as the focus.
He is a prolific writer of books and articles and is a widely sought after speaker for school groups and naturalist societies.
We were able to have him at our school through a generous donations from the Arts and Humanities Council and the Tulsa Audubon Society. This year is the 75th anniversary of the Tulsa Audubon Society and the presentation was their “gift” to the commu-nity. Featured in the box to the right is one of the poems written by Samuel Taylor-7th grade
THE OWL, by Samuel Taylor, Carver 7th grade
The Owl sleeps in the light
Waiting, waiting, until the night
And when it sees the moon on first sight
It stretches its wings, ready for flight.
In the night, its wings always flap
Looking for a bug, for its beak to trap
And when the sun finally shows
It returns to its nest, for its daily doze.

There is a sweet compe-tition between Mrs. Jami-son, Mrs. Spavins, and Mrs. T. Smith's A.O.I. classes on who will be Sweetest Elves this Holiday Sea-son. Each A.O.I. class will collect items for D.V.I.S. from Nov. 29th to Dec. 17th, 2010. The purpose is to assist the efforts of displaced women living at the (D.V.I.S.) Sojourner Tran-sitional Home. These women are on a mission to overcome past do-mestic violence experi-ences and re-establish their lives and independ-ent living conditions for themselves and their children. Therefore, we
are
are collecting items like toiletries (deodorant, shampoo, lotion, etc.), gently used or new clothes for ba-bies to adult women, and household items (cleaning supplies, towels, bot-tles,etc.). This will allow for our well rounded and com-munity service driven stu-dents to give back to the community, while receiving
a sweet reward.
Our efforts are in combina-tion with Tulsa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to collect over 250 items for DVIS. Our goal for Carver is to col-lect at least 30 items per par-
ticipating class.
As a way to thank the stu-dents for their hard work, each teacher will provide a decadent holiday sweet party for her class on Dec.
17, 2010 during A.O.I. only.
If you would like to help in any way by donating items for D.V.I.S. or helping with the decadent holiday sweet party, please email Mrs. Tametra Jamison at [email protected]
with any questions. Thank you for being a blessing to
someone in need!
Love,
Ms. Jamison, Ms. Spavins
and Mrs. T. Smith
