Making Columns • F – Find the columns • I – Insert the ts• N – Name the columns • D – Determine the numbers of hundreds, tens, and ones
Labeling Columns • Insert the initial letters for ones, tens, hundreds, and so
on over their respective columns:

Pegboard• Use a pegboard to teach borrowing and carrying. • Use masking tape to divide the pegboard into three rows
and three columns with nine holes in each square • Draw an arrow from right to left on a piece of tape that
separates the bottom third. (the equals sign)
Place Value Cards • Make cards with numbers on one side and tallies for the
number of tens, hundreds, and so on in that number on the other side.
• Strings can be attached to the cards for stringing beads to represent the number in each column.
