The role of real estate at personal, corporate and national level has changed enormously and it has become strategic as corporate and nations compete for investments and markets, and individuals invest in assets. The life cycle of real estate is complex and multi-disciplinary involving economics, law, planning, construction technology, valuation and finance and principles of sustainability, most of which in applied sense. The real estate education that the School provides is a unique blend of conceptual and practice based learning.

Piyush Tiwari is Professor and Director, School of Real Estate at the RICS School of Built Environment, Amity University. He is also the Head - Property, Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, University of Melbourne and was previously the Director-Policy at Infrastructure Development Finance Company.

He worked as a Senior Lecturer (Property) at the University of Aberdeen, UK and HDFC, India – the largest mortgage firm and has held several academic positions at the University of Tsukuba, Japan.

His research interests include housing economics and mortgages, commercial real estate investment, and financing infrastructure in developing countries and have published numerous research papers on issues related to real estate and infrastructure in journals. Member of education sub-committee of RICS Victoria/Tasmania Local Association, Prof. Tiwari authored “International real estate economics” and “India infrastructure report 2011”. He is currently working on two books, “Real estate finance in the new world economy” and “India’s reluctant urbanization: thinking beyond”.

PRACTICAL TEACHING WITH A HANDS-ON APPROACH

While students learn the principles of valuation in class, they go out, inspect, measure and value residential/commercial properties.

While they learn development process in class, they step in developer shoes and do development feasibility of a greenfield project at the outskirt of a major city.

With a rich mix of academic, research, industry and consulting experience in India, Canada, USA, and Australia in the last 20 years, Prof. Anil Sawhney has built a substantial record of academic leadership and created a strong education, research, consulting, and service program in the area of construction project management and construction management education. He also holds an Honorary Professor position in the School of Built Environment, University of Salford, Manchester UK and Associate Member position in the Centre for Sustainable Development, University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK. Previously, he was a Professor of Civil Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Built Environment, University of Technology Sydney. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a member of the Project Management Institute.

Prof. Sawhney performed consulting assignments for a large number of organizations, including the World Bank and was later appointed to the Bureau of Indian Standards panel for construction project management (BIS/CED29/P1). Prof. Sawhney also serves on the executive committee of the India Design Innovation Education Forum and has been the National Coordinator of the India Student BIM Competition since 2011. Anil works extensively in the area of Building Information Modelling and Lean Construction in close collaboration with the industry. Dr Sawhney is passionate about the effective use of technology in the built environment sector and speaks extensively on this topic in national and international events.

TEACHING DRIVEN BY RESEARCH EXPERIENCES

Current and cutting edge issues such as Building Information Modelling, Knowledge Management, Lean Practices, Offsite Construction, Sustainability, Safety, Productivity, Risk Management and other important aspects of project management are taught in the school.

Teaching driven by research experiences is also an important aspect of teaching and learning ethos of the school. Engaging students in activities that are interactive and driving home the importance of practical aspects of what they learn in the classroom is taken very seriously by the faculty. Numerous strategies are used to accomplish this.

The paper-tower game is used to show students the importance of coordination, communication and collaboration – similar to different phases of a project life cycle including designing, planning, construction, monitoring and controlling.

The airplane game helps students understand the difference between push and pull scheduling.

The LEAPCON game is used to help students gain insights into the lean practices relevant to the construction sector.

INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE

With University of Salford, UK as an international partner, some students are going to study one semester at the School of Built Environment, Salford University.

Our partnership with Real Estate Academy of China (ReaCH) gave our students the opportunity to travel to six Asian cities to get a flavour of international real estate and construction markets.

Series of industry case studies conducted in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore. REAL LIFE CASE STUDIES

A rich portfolio of local and international case studies has been put together for practical learning in areas such as - project marketing, market research and project appraisal, feasibility study, financial modeling, to name a few.

SITE VISITS

Students are being exposed to real life projects via visits on construction sites where they are taken through aspects such as planning, construction techniques, building management services and facilities. Recent examples included visits to Unitech Golf and Country Club, Unitech Golf Course Noida, L & T Casting Yard Site for DMRC, Faridabad and UGCC Burgundy by Unitech. Group, Greater Noida.

CAPSTONE PROJECTTowards the end of their study, students will undertake major piece of guided independent research on agreed topics between the student and their supervisor. It would involve a literature review and an appropriate form of critical analysis of sources of primary and /or secondary data with some field work. A thesis written at the end of the project will ensure the students delve more deeply to synthesize knowledge acquired in previous studies.

The purpose is to enable the student to develop deeper knowledge, understanding, capabilities and attitudes in the context of the programme of study.
