The reasons for this may be historical, but it is a sign that the UK has a supply chain with a much lower critical mass at the lower tiers than its main European competition.

Another key fact from a report on the German Aerospace industry indicates quite clearly that quality and delivery performance is no better than the UK, but SME’s invest much more in innovation and R&D.

The primes are making the case for increased critical mass in the supply chain and it appears that Germany has or is achieving that.

This critical mass and the ability or policy to invest in R&D is unlikely to be a coincidence.

The question is ‘does Germany create better conditions for SME growth’?

The barriers to growth can be simple:

• Space constraints and the availability of appropriate facilities.• The cost of expansion. There is no short term return• Financing expansion – support from customers• Management structure and capability to manage growth

The supply chain needs smaller companies. They provide flexibility, a lower cost base, specific expertise and niche capability and the companies are local employment providers. However, lower tier companies have to grow

in capability and strength to adapt to global competition, otherwise they will be vulnerable to non UK competition. Government support schemes need to consider relief of these barriers to growth. SME’s have to recognise that a status quo strategy is a risk in itself.

The Aerospace Growth Partnership has delivered the Aerospace Technology Institute with Government funding of £1billion over seven years with and equivalent match from industry.

The signs are that the emphasis is now moving to ensure we have a supply chain that can sustain this investment. That means growth through financial strength and capability.

That is the challenge!

The Case for SME Growth

By Martin Wright, Chief Executive Officer, NWAA

In 2007 the European Community reported the average size of companies in the aerospace industry varied considerably from country to country. In Germany it was 359, France 210 and the UK 148. Conversely the UK had the highest share of enterprises with 31.8%, France 17.5% and Germany 9.3%.

Strategy & direction in tune with collaborative approachesBy Neil McKay, Chairman, NWAAThroughout the year the NWAA has been evaluating our organisation and strategic direction with a view to utilising our resources efficiently in pursuit of the next phases of regional and national development for our industry.

As always the board has constructively analysed various proposals from the operational team and is keenly supportive of the implementation of the next era of strategic influences.

The NWAA has important impacts on the national agenda and is a big supporter of the Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP) and its requirements for the exciting future of this sector.

The national strategy and direction are in tune with the collaborative approaches common to this regions industry and programme activity demonstrated in ASCE and so the influences on advancing an SC21+ programme and the creation of a National Supply Chain Centre are of a nature very familiar to our practices. It is therefore most sensible that the NWAA have been asked to contribute to the bid for a proposed centre to government in the autumn.

With these issues in mind it is important that we continue to demonstrate the momentum of our programmes and activities and to increase our member services. To that end we are active in increasing the frequency, variety and message in our forums around the region. A varied industry-wide communication on subjects such as the AGP, India and other topical business issues are now regular forum agendas.

A series of quarterly commodity forums are being planned. These begin in late October with a major forum on Robotics

Automation and Tooling featuring national speakers and provoking, challenging business options. Later forums will follow a similar pattern and will include commodities such as Composites, Machining, Process Treatments and Design and Engineering.

These forums will provide a platform for the broader membership and nationally invited audience to respond to professional presentations of best practices and exciting commodity strategy displayed by the respective commodity groups.

These events are intended to repeat annually and drive high interest, member benefit and regional prestige whilst influencing the national picture and agenda.

This added thrust combined with the strength of our continuing programme activities along with a very active UK industry scene positions us with significant best practice data and methodology that we are now able to regularly communicate through a multitude of forums across the year delivering beneficial influence on business and opportunity for involvement in industry challenging collaborations at the right levels.

I urge you to support these major activities and welcome your feedback to myself and the team.

What you value and where we can improve the momentum of our industry is vitally important to us at the NWAA.

Airbus has delivered its 8,000th aircraft – an A320 for the Indonesian wing of AirAsia. The aircraft took off from Toulouse, France on Saturday 3rd August and arrived on the 5th August at its new base in Jakarta.

The delivery of the 8,000th Airbus aircraft highlights the manufacturer’s position as leader in the civil aircraft market, delivering airlines the most advanced, fuel efficient family of aircraft available today. The product line is also the most comprehensive ever offered by an aircraft manufacturer, covering every segment of the market from 100 to over 500 seats.

“AirAsia has a long-standing, special relationship with Airbus. This is a very special moment for all of us. The people behind Airbus and their commitment in delivering the best product are key to our fruitful relationship, and we are extremely proud to have the 8,000th Airbus as a member of our fleet. It’s the same pioneering, forward-looking mindset and a lot of hard work that have brought both AirAsia and Airbus to their respective leading positions today,” said Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia.

“The excellent fuel efficiency and economics of Airbus aircraft are key

contributors to AirAsia’s success – we are confident that these modern aircraft will enable us to continue our ambitious growth plans.”

“It’s particularly fitting that our 8,000th delivery goes to AirAsia - one of the world’s fastest growing airlines,” said Fabrice Brégier, Airbus President and CEO. “In an increasingly challenging and diverse worldwide economic context, we are more than ever focused on delivering real value to our customers. We will achieve this by continuing to innovate, together with our customers, in all fields of the business to stay ahead of the game and offer the most efficient products and services.”

A new revolutionary monorail system for the F-35 assembly line now extends to the manufacture of tails for the F-35 alongside the aft sections currently using this process.

The first tails in jig on the line belong to aircraft AF57, a Conventional Take Off and Landing F-35 built for the United States. After machining operations the tails will pulse through a series of three stations during which sealants are applied followed by two carbon skins known as ‘structural wet assembly.

At peak rate production tails will move down the line at a rate of one completed set every day.

Andy Higgins who runs the facility said “The empennage line is a major step forward in the transformation of this facility. Since we opened an extension to the facility, doubling its size to 18300m in March 2012 we’ve maintained our commitments to deliver against a demanding production schedule whilst at the same time developing and implementing new manufacturing techniques. The team has done a remarkable job to make the transition happen smoothly.”

With the structural wet assembly line now operational, work continues to put in place the pre machining element of the line which will complete the transformation in early 2014.

The line is the latest stage in the transformation of the state of the art Samlesbury manufacturing facility where the rear fuselage, horizontal tails and vertical tails for the F-35 are produced.

The new line for the tails (or empennage as it is commonly referred to) is built on the same lean principals as the rear fuselage line and allows more units to be produced more efficiently than before. Both feature an overhead monorail system which ‘pulses’ parts down the line for all three types of F-35 aircraft (Conventional, STOVL and Carrier variant).

This summer over 100 undergraduates are receiving high-quality training and gaining a recognised qualification with BAE Systems, across sites in the UK as part of their first ever paid summer internship scheme.

Over a 12-week period, the students will work in a variety of disciplines from engineering to business development.

The summer internship scheme was introduced following successful pilots during the past two years.

It is funded through the government’s ‘Employer Ownership of Skills’ initiative and provides undergraduates with experience of real work at a graduate level. Andy Chapman, early careers manager, said the scheme provides ‘core behavioural and technical skills’.

The internship scheme has been created in partnership with skills body Semta, the employer-led body responsible for equipping the UK’s vital engineering, science and manufacturing technologies sectors with the skills to compete on the global stage.

Record Half Year Sales for DelcamCADCAM developer Delcam is pleased to announce that the company achieved record sales for a six-month period during the first half of 2013. This latest result means that the company has set new record levels of sales in each of the last seven half-year periods.

Sales to 30th June 2013 increased by 9% over the same period of last year to reach £25.0 million. Pre-tax profits for the period also increased over the equivalent period of 2012 to reach £2.8 million. Both results were helped by improved performances across most of the territories where Delcam operates.

The strongest overall results continue to come from the USA, the UK, Germany, Italy and China. Delcam saw good growth from its subsidiaries in Canada, France and India, and from its joint ventures in Korea and Thailand.

The Delcam Professional Services subsidiary continued its growth, winning a number of significant contracts for its consultancy and prototype manufacturing services from the aerospace industry.

In the latest report from US analysts CIMdata, Delcam was confirmed, for the thirteenth consecutive year, to be the world’s leading specialist supplier of CAM software and services.

Commenting on the record sales achievements, Delcam Chairman Peter Miles, said, “The first half results were encouraging. We continue to be very positive about our prospects, since we believe that the combination of our strong product offering, increasing automation in manufacturing and our broad range of markets, both geographically and in the number of industries we serve, offers the Group very good scope for further growth.”

100 undergraduates take intern places at BAE Systems

Sarah Sillars, OBE, CEO of Semta said: “Semta believes in earning and learning and we know that there is nothing as inspirational as hands-on experience for any budding engineer.

“All credit to BAE Systems for their initiative in this regard. We are pleased to partner them to help make this happen.

“We hope to create many more such schemes – paid internships – with great British companies that are crying out for young, able and ambitious men and women to join them.

“With more than 80,000 engineers due to retire in the next few years – and order books filling – we have our work cut out to fill the skills gap. This type of initiative can be a big boon to British manufacturing.”

Twenty-two year old James Gartland, studying Mechanical Engineering at Durham University and on placement with the Typhoon aircraft fuel team at the Warton site added: “I’m thoroughly enjoying the internship so far. It has given me a brilliant opportunity to apply some of the skills and knowledge I’ve gained through my academic studies to solve real problems, with real impact.”

The first intake of students on a £6m industry-sponsored bursary scheme has been announced by Business Minister Michael Fallon during a visit to Airbus’ Broughton plant.

The Minister praised Airbus’ dedication to the future of the aerospace industry by supporting the scheme to help meet the demand for aerospace engineers.

The programme which is jointly funded by the UK government and the aerospace industry will recruit 500 people.

The government have awarded 100 bursaries to employees and graduates at the plant to study Masters (MSc) level degrees in aerospace engineering, which will help the sector develop the high-level skills it needs to compete globally.

MEMBER NEWS

The bursaries cover the cost of tuition fees up to £9,500 and encourage participating students to forge relationships with UK aerospace companies through project work and placements.

Local apprentices who manufacture the wings for the new A350 XWB fleet met the minister as he toured the plant.

Mr Fallon said: “It has been my pleasure and privilege to be here at Airbus to see the construction of the A350 at first hand, and to share the first steps we’re taking in this very important industry.

“The Masters programme is an excellent example of government and industry working together to keep the UK competitive, as it will help us meet the urgent demand for engineers in this country.

“We have been successfully operating waterjet cutting facilities in the USA, Canada, Australia and Finland, the UK is a logical extension of these services. This integration will significantly strengthen our offering to our global customer base, especially to customers in the UK.”

As the acquisition will considerably ease the logistics of waterjet cutting services, customers in other European markets will also benefit from a faster, more cost-efficient service.

John Ferguson, Managing Director of ThyssenKrupp Aerospace UK states: “We expect the combination of The Waterjet Group’s and ThyssenKrupp Aerospace’s expertise to deliver further productivity improvements and growth opportunities. The special focus on improving near net shape cutting, thus improving the metal-utilisation, will continue to be part of our strategic goal.”

Steve Smith, Managing Director of The Waterjet Group, said: “This is a very positive and exciting move for the company and its employees. We foresee many new opportunities working with ThyssenKrupp Aerospace and look forward to continue to service our existing customers with an increased level of commitment and service that comes with a larger organisation.”

ThyssenKrupp Aerospace, via its UK subsidiary, has acquired the business activities of The Waterjet Group, based in Darton, South Yorkshire.

The closing took place on July 31, 2013. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

The Waterjet Group (around 40 employees) was established in 2002 and is a leading UK waterjet cutting company for the aerospace industry.

The company has several waterjets and related value add equipment, a large number of aerospace approvals and to a smaller extent also serves other high-tech industries, including the medical technology sector.

The Waterjet Group operates out of a site near Leeds. With its equipment the company is able to process a wide range of materials and sizes for the European and international customer base.

ThyssenKrupp Aerospace has been working with The Waterjet Group for many years and will be integrating its employees, equipment and technical expertise into the ThyssenKrupp Aerospace global network.

“The acquisition of The Waterjet Group has strategic advantages for us,” explains Jürgen Funke, President of ThyssenKrupp Aerospace.

Kenard’s diversity demands leads to partnership with JemtechAs part of its long-term strategy the Kenard Engineering Group, one of the UK’s leading privately owned precision engineering companies, has built up a broad mix of customers, across a variety of industry sectors. This diversity, particularly in terms of the materials being machined, placed extra demands on the metalworking fluids being used so it turned to Jemtech (UK) for assistance.

Kenard was finding that the sump life of its metalworking fluids was not matching the promise made by its existing supplier. In fact they were only managing six months, or less, between sump changes and the cost of this, along with the inconvenience, drove Kenard to look for a more pro-active partner for its metalworking fluids.

“When we asked the various service engineers that visited us, the general consensus was that we should talk to Jemtech. A process that we initiated about two years ago. During those discussions it became obvious that Jemtech, along with Blaser, could provide the kind of support that we were looking for,” says Matt Cornford, Kenard’s Operations Director.

In addition to guaranteeing extended sump life with its Blaser BC 25 MD fluids, Jemtech also worked in partnership with Kenard to gain approval from a major UK aerospace customer to use its cutting fluids in the machining of aero-engine parts.

Jemtech also committed to provide a weekly service visit to monitor coolant strength and condition. Matt added “This support removed a lot of the concerns that we had and also freed up valuable time of our people, allowing them to concentrate on manufacturing components, not worrying about cutting fluids.”

He started business in a London workshop in 1940 producing capacitors for the military but the threat posed by the blitz forced him to relocate in 1942 and he chose the Lake District, establishing Oxley in Market Place, Ulverston.

Freddy at one time had over 150 patents to his name and encouraged a creative culture, urging employees to look at innovative ways of improving and adapting products. This attitude to innovation, quality and manufacturing excellence has remained at the heart of the company’s success.

By the 1950s the company employed more than 80 assemblers and its growth prompted a move to Priory Park, Bardsea which has been the site of the headquarters ever since.

The business quickly developed an international customer base which led to significant expansion in the United States and in 1976 Oxley Inc was established in Connecticut. An additional component manufacturing facility was opened in Barrow in 1992.

Oxley is now a global company, employing 190 people. It remains a leading designer and manufacturer of electronic and electro-optic systems and components for defence and aerospace markets with exports across the world now accounting for half of its turnover.

Oxley Developments is the UK’s leading manufacturer of advanced LED lighting systems for military and aerospace applications.

Product ranges include night vision goggles, compatible lighting, external aircraft lighting and cockpit upgrades; internal and external naval lighting for ships and submarines and area lighting for both military vehicles and shelters.

A leader in LED technology, the production of EMC filters to prevent electromagnetic interference and the manufacture of interconnect components, Oxley has built its reputation on innovation and excellence designed to enhance the capability of platforms and systems across the world.

Many of Oxley’s products and lighting systems are designed and manufactured to operate in the harshest military environments and meet exacting standards.

The company is known for constantly pushing the technology boundaries and has pioneered LED lighting development both in terms of performance and adding value for customers, with smart electronics to monitor the status of individual lights and deliver intelligent through-life support.

The latest innovation from Oxley is the development of the Next Generation High Intensity LED Taxi and Landing Lights; these are low wattage, lightweight and deliver full performance over the whole aircraft operating temperature range. The peak intensity of the landing light is 400,000cd and the taxi light is 42,000cd.

The lights are currently in production for a major aircraft manufacturer and the low maintenance design, resistance to shock and vibration and the high MTBF of over 10,000 hours on the landing light have proved to be popular features for manufacturers looking to reduce costs and increase reliability.

The Oxley Developments Company was founded by Robert Frederick (Freddy) Oxley in 1942. He was an extraordinary man who combined an enquiring mind with a broad capability in designing and producing electronics, starting off as a boy taking apart any electronic devices he could find to discover how they worked, and as a teenager graduating to assembling radio receivers from military surplus parts.

Freddy was soon snapped by the electronics industry and found his natural home in exports when they learned that in addition to his extraordinary technical mind he also spoke five languages fluently and had a working knowledge of several more.

The successful completion of an ambitious and exciting project to create a new state of the art Business Aviation Centre and Executive Terminal at Ronaldsway Airport, marks the dawn of an new era for the Island’s aviation sector.

The stunning new centre has been created by the Private Jet Company and opens a new business aviation gateway to the Island, to enable it to compete with leading UK and European centres that already offer high-class facilities for business/private jets.

The Private Jet Company was first incorporated in 2007, and has rapidly developed its own niche market. It’s a bespoke solution that is focused on a close personal relationship with clients, and which can cover all bases in terms of initial purchase of the aircraft and its registration, to maintenance and day-to-day operation. The Private Jet Company has dedicated crews at the disposal of clients whenever they require their services. Furthermore the intricacies of technical documentation, flight planning and hangarage are all part of the service.

The opening of the new centre at the Island’s airport has gone hand in hand with an aggressive marketing initiative to land the Isle of Man a share of the lucrative transatlantic private /business jet market. Presently aircraft use airports such as Prestwick (Scotland) and Shannon (Ireland) for re-fuelling and technical stops. But now, The Private Jet Company believes the Island is poised to land a significant share of the business.

Evidence suggests their confidence is well founded. The company’s client base has risen by between 65

and 70 per cent in just three years, and with the new Business Aviation Centre and Executive Terminal now on stream, the sky’s the limit.

Facilities at the new centre are impressive, and cover all the demanding day-to-day requirements of the Business aviation sector. There’s an executive lounge, VIP Passenger facilities, conference room, ample complimentary parking, pre-cleared immigration for passengers and crew, on-site security screening (if required) and a dedicated quiet room with shower facilities.

The centre is located away from the main terminal and offers substantial hangarage, able to accommodate aircraft up to, and including, Bombardier Global Express 8000. A full fuelling service provided by Shell is also offered, along with extensive support services (de-icing, lav/water, oxygen and nitrogen top-ups, interior and exterior cleaning.

The new centre provides the Private Jet Company with room to expand, and provides a timely boost to the Manx economy, as it seeks to diversify and grow.

Private Jet Company spokeswoman, Caly Roberts, said the move into the new centre marked an exciting period in the company’s history: “We are still feeling our feet in the building, but it’s already been incredibly busy. We believe the centre will be an asset for the whole of the Island, and apart from giving us the space to grow and develop our services, there will be a positive spin-off for other service providers, such as hotels, taxis, fuel suppliers and a host of other businesses. It’s been a long and difficult process to get to where we are, but now it’s onwards and upwards.”

IOMAC Apprentice Technology VisitsEach year the apprentices from the Isle of Man Aerospace Cluster join together to visit companies to see technology and capability typically not available on the Island, as part of their overall training.

Year 2 apprentices from Ronaldsway, Swagelok and GE Aviation visited the Rolls-Royce casting facility in Derby and the AMRC in Sheffield.

In the morning they visited the ‘Factory of the Future’ which consisted of some of the world’s latest engineering machinery, including a GCM-Series Waterjet machine and a 3D computer display that allows the user to explode and move sections of a component assembly drawing.

The apprentices said that this technology

was interesting to see, and gave them a greater understanding of where the aerospace industry is heading.

The afternoon was spent at the Rolls-Royce casting facility. Here, the apprentices were shown how wax patterns were formed, assembled and coated in a ceramic composite, which when dried create the castings for the components.

Visiting this facility gave them a first hand experience of this process they had studied and a greater understanding of this casting method. The apprentices were also shown the inspection and NDT facilities, where they saw examples of castings that had failed and what features in particular caused them to fail.

ISO QA joins Isle of Man Aerospace ClusterA company which guides businesses through complex but increasingly important ISO certification standards has been invited to join the influential Isle of Man Aerospace Cluster (IOMAC).

The invitation to ISO QA Isle of Man Ltd came from IOMAC chairman Adrian Moore and the company’s directors, Kevin Burnell and Lee McLellan, were officially welcomed during the Cluster’s latest forum at St John’s Mill, Tynwald Mills.

Mr Moore said: ‘We are delighted that a company of the calibre of ISO QA Isle of Man has accepted the invitation that sees the Cluster become a collaboration of 22 companies.’

The forum was also attended by David Bailey, executive director of North West

Aerospace Alliance (NWAA), and Kelvin Davies, of BAE Systems, along with Cluster representatives.

Mr Burnell said: ‘We regard membership of IOMAC as important recognition of the work we do in guiding companies through the complex requirements of very diverse standards they are now expected to achieve and maintain.’

These include ISO9001 Quality, ISO14001 Environment, ISO18001 Health and Safety, ISO27001 Information Security and ISO50001 Energy.

ISO QA Isle of Man Ltd also conduct commercial energy audits, looking at how companies can best use the energy and also how to save energy costs.

The Year 4 apprentices visited the Airbus site in Broughton, where they saw wings for the A330, A340, A350 and A380 being assembled.

The apprentices were amazed by the size of the facility and the experience gave them an insight into the further manufacturing and assembly techniques used in the aerospace industry.

The Cluster offers cost-effective, joined-up solutions for its global blue chip client base.

As part of the North West Aerospace Alliance, one of the most active aerospace clusters in Europe, the IOMAC is part of one of the most influential ‘aerospace hotspots’ in the British Isles.

Mr Moore said: ‘We are able to provide design and manufactured solutions with a reputation for one-stop shop capability and the utilisation of an international supply chain.

‘We are proud to say we are partners to virtually every major civil and military project in the world today.’

Trichloroethylene (TRI) has been added to Annex XIV of the REACH regulation on April 21, 2013. As a result of this inclusion the use of the solvent will only be possible after the sunset date (April 21, 2016) if authorisation is granted. Hence all users are required to evaluate suitable alternatives to substitute TRI before the sunset date.

As a complete solution provider for customised cleaning processes with solvents, SAFECHEM Europe, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow), assists customers in this important evaluation process.

For applications in which TRI is indispensable and cannot be substituted, SAFECHEM and Dow are in preparation to apply for authorisation of the substance for the use in industrial surface cleaning in ‘closed’ machines.

Authorisation will only be considered if an end user can demonstrate with data evidence that proves no suitable alternative is available. This requires information which lists all efforts to identify possible alternatives and reviews the technical and economical feasibility and availability of the substance.

SAFECHEM and Dow have started to prepare the dossier to apply for authorisation of TRI on behalf of its supply chain.

The application will only include the industrial use of TRI in surface cleaning in closed cleaning machines considered as Best Available Technology (BAT) and defined by the European Chlorinated Solvent Association (ECSA).

Furthermore it will be limited to applications in which the substance cannot be substituted or substitution cannot be realised before the sunset date.

Networking will form a key part of the evening and VIPs from within the Aerospace Industry & Government representatives from both the UK and France have been invited. This year our Guests of Honour are:
