There is no shortage of handy quotes from well-known political figures extolling the virtues of tourism as a conduit of peace, tolerance, and understanding in our global village. Since ages, travel has been one of the great forces for peace and understanding. As people move throughout the world and learn to know each other, to understand each other’s customs and to appreciate the qualities of individuals of each nation, tourism industry has come up as an integral part of our economy.
Tourism has experienced continued expansion and diversification, and it has become one of the fastest growing
and most important economic sectors in the world, benefiting destinations and communities worldwide. This World Tourism Day celebrates Tourism’s role in Job creation with UNWTO’s overarching focus on skills, education and jobs.
As one of the big job creators in India and abroad, Tourism industry has shown uninterrupted growth and resilience. India has already moved up six places to rank 34th on World Travel and Tourism Competitive Index 2019 released recently by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Indian travel and tourism industry is eyeing a bigger share of the world tourism pie.
We hope that the spirit of travel never ends, along with the equitable growth of the nation.

“Every year, with the advent of summer, people flock towards cooler climates to escape the heat, which, in a country like India, is provided mostly by hills and mountains. They provide cooler temperatures and stunning beauty to recharge one’s mind and body. Everyone wants to capture such moments and preserve them digitally. The social media does a fine job to remind people about such memories periodically, allowing one to relive those moments, and strive to visit more such places. On the other side of such a beauty, is trash. Incessant growth, with complete disregard towards environmental impact on the part of service providers, combined with vehement apathy towards civic sense and trash disposal responsibility on the part of the tourists, gives rise to a scenario where the trash eventually becomes so unmanageable that the sole reason people visit such places becomes the opposite. And once such a scenario is reached, the whole ecosystem fails, ranging from natural to economic calamity. But then, India is huge. A new “virgin natural beauty” is discovered, and people start flocking to the next best thing, leaving behind their discarded beauty, and responsibility.”

WHY TRAVELLING ‘RIGHT’ MATTERS?
Travelling places ‘right’ matters. Travelling places ‘left’ behind with plastic and trashes only litters :D
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page,” wisely pointed out St. Augustine. I wanted to start this article with this quote because traveling has become one of the most essential parts of our lives. Sometimes one travels to exotic places and some others keep it simple and local, but just the act of getting out of our homes and experiencing new places, new routes, new food, new people and even new languages is intrinsic to our nature.
Nowadays, people are inspired to travel because they’re curious and fascinated by the world around them. Which is great! The world is a beautiful, exciting place. But travel can have negative impacts on that world we love so much. Which is why responsible travel matters.
When you visit different places you can’t ignore what’s around. To procure the best out of the nature, the power is in keeping it sane. Whether you call it responsible, sustainable, or eco-friendly, it all basically means traveling in a way that minimizes impact and gives back to the places we visit. Promoting this type of tourism is critical if we want to continue enjoying the natural beauty, the culture, and the interactions that make travel so special.
Traveling helps us to understand things that are outside of our control and puts in perspective what we used to consider the absolute truth. How insignificant our town looks when we see it from 30, 000 feet from the air? How can we think that whatever the rules are in that minuscule place are the same for all the world? Technology is supposed to help broaden our minds, but in the end, a person can use every tool available to communicate only with the people they know. Their little worlds are brought to the virtual life but they remain little, they remain ignorant.
When we fall in love with a new place, we have the locals to thank. They are the ones who cherish those places as home. They work there, live there, love there, and infuse those places with the culture, color, and personality that ultimately draws in the tourists.
MORALE: The only thing you should be leaving behind after your travel is your foot prints, not your food prints.

With this year’s WTD theme “Tourism and Jobs: A Better Future for All”, it could not have been more fitting as job creation is something on top of the governments’ agenda in every country. And not only does it create employment but also stimulates new investments in different sectors and creates revenues. It is important for the industry as well as government to ensure that tourism must not be outcome-based but look at long term sustainability thus leading to equitable growth opportunities for all.”

“India is a treasure trove of cultural resources, strewn across its length and breadth. In year 2014-2015, Government of India with Ministry of Tourism launched the Swadesh Darshan Scheme to integrate and develop theme-based tourist circuits in the country. The idea behind it was to support local communities, generate employment, integration of local social fabric without jeopardizing the environment and provide a unique experience to the tourists.
Amidst all the development initiatives, it is prudent to adhere to environmental guidelines as well. Often pristine locations in the country have borne the brunt of unforeseen mass tourism activities (e.g. Leh-Ladakh the issues of waste management, water crises and impact on local ecosystem started surfacing). As such, it is crucial to have mechanisms in place to sustainably manage critical services such as water, waste disposal, power generation etc. (an example of a sustained and well managed eco-tourism destination is Matheran, Maharashtra).
Engaging local communities and enterprises in decision making and development processes would not only lead to a more informed tourism development, it would also inculcate a sense of ownership and result in effective operations and monitoring and lead to sustainable and economically feasible tourism development models.”
