points in their or#it to the nodes or interface points) represent these same

principles as they are "hen most mutually disinclined -- each to the other! 2ere is

a #rief summary of the astronomical #asis for this concept!

    The Basic Astronomy

    $hat is a node% &s "e kno", each planet or#its around the 'un in a large ellipse

"ith the 'un in the center, at one focus! This or#ital ellipse defines a plane

passing through the center of the 'un (3igure 4)! The planes of the or#its of the

nine planets in our solar system do not happen to coincide, #ut instead, arenclined to one another, slightly! The line defined #y the intersection of the

planes of any t"o planetary or#its is called the line of nodes (3igure 5)!

ur solar system has the 'un at its center and this is kno"n as the heliocentric

celestial sphere! (3igure 6)! 'ince all of the planetary or#ital planes pass throughthe center of the 'un, the planes all intersect the celestial sphere in "hat are

called great circles! Therefore, each intersecting planetary plane has a distinct

pair of nodes "ith each of the other planets -- the system of planetary nodes!

The planetary nodes of all the other planets "ith respect to the *arth (i!e! "here

their planes intersect the *arth.s or#ital plane -- ecliptic) and the inclinations of

these planes to the *arth.s or#ital plane are kno"n to astrologers, although they

are not often used! There is, ho"ever, some reference in the astrological literatureto a planet #eing at its node in the plane of the *arth! 3or instance7 8ranus might

#e sighted as #eing at its northern or southern node, and yet seldom (almost

never) do "e find reference to the *arth #eing at this same nodal point (and inthe 8ranian plane), although this happens t"ice a year9 &t these times, the *arth

moves into the 8ranian plane and takes on some of the qualities of that planet!

y point is that "hile astrologers have em#raced and used the concept of

planetary pairs "hen it comes to aspects, "e have fallen short as regards thenodal pairs, although they are at least as physically valid! &strologers have a

plethora or riches "hen it comes to points and techniques availa#le to them!

l no", almost no attention has #een given to the fact that each pair of planetaryor#its intersect one another to produce their o"n set of nodal intersections, that

have nothing to do "ith the or#it of the *arth! It is this last category that is the

    particular su#ect of this article!

*arth is #ut one planet, al#eit a very important one to us, in our solar system!$hat "e are eamining here ("hich are not so familiar, although easily

computed) are the nodes "here any t"o planets. or#ital planes (irrespective of the*arth.s plane) intersect! This article is concerned "ith the location of the entiresystem of planetary-pair nodal points (interface point) as they can #e measured

    along the zodiac!

    Locating the Nodes:

:et.s consider any t"o planets other than the *arth, such as ars and 'aturn! The

planes of their or#its make great circles on the elestial 'phere as does the planeof the *arth.s or#it! $here these t"o great planes intersect one another are

planetary nodes or interface points for this particular planetary pair! Notice that

these points are located slightly a#ove or #elo" the zodiac plane, #ut not right in

t! 'ince "e have only our zodiac as our plane of reference, it is convenient to usethis in order to point out activities in these other planes! 8sing spherical

trigonometry, "e have proected these points onto our ecliptic so that #y

"atching either ars or 'aturn transit a given point in our zodiac (using the

heliocentric ephemeris), "e kno" that the planet (either ars or 'aturn) is

simultaneously at its Interface and eactly in the plane of the second planet! Theresult is an easy "ay for us to tell "hen a planet is at a particular interface point,

#ut using a standard heliocentric ephemeris! No" let.s look at the system ofnterface points from a less technical vie"point!

The Value of Nodal Points in Astrological Work

:et us #riefly revie" the use of nodes in modern astrology7

Nodes7 &s mentioned earlier, astrology is very nodal, more than you might

magine! This article concentrates on the planetary nodes! 2o"ever, ust in

passing, you may "ish to note that standard points like the &scendant and ;erteare nothing more than nodes! It al"ays takes the planes of t"o independent

coordinate systems to create a node! &nd "hile astrologers are a"are that pointsike the ascendant and verte are zodiac points, many are not a"are that the

ascendant is #rought to you #y means of the independent plane of the local

horizon! It is "here they intersect to form a line of nodes! 'till fe"er kno" that

the ;erte is made availa#le #y the intersecting prime vertical coordinate system(again, to the zodiac)! In fact, most of the hot spots of astrology are "here t"o

coordinates systems come together to intersect and create an interesting set of

nodes or points! 'o much of our astrology concerns itself only "ith the zodiacthat there is little a"areness of the many supporting systems of coordinates that

    are also in effect!

and appreciated #y astrologers is the failure to realize these points in their

reciprocity! & nodal point, #y definition, represents the mutual intersection of

t"o independent (planetary or#ital) planes! $e have chosen to call these nodalpoints .Interface Points., as this "ord emphasized the reciprocal nature of any

single point! They point #oth "ays!

a#ove the given plane)! The southern or descending node is a transit from north

to south (a#ove to #elo" the given plane)! ove and #elo" are defined #y the

position of the north pole of the ecliptic! To revie"7

& given planet transits a node, at "hich time it is perfectly in the plane of thesecond planet and continues along its or#it (a"ay from that node) until the point

s reached of greatest latitude ("hether north or south) in relation to the nodal

nterface in question! 3rom that moment on"ard, the planet proceeds to moveto"ard the opposite nodal point and once again directly to the opposite node and

nto the plane of the planet to #e transited! Therefore, matters of interpretation are

some"hat simplified and restricted (at least at first) to an analysis of the various

quadrants7 transit to the nodes and to the points of greatest disinclination (a#oveand #elo") to these nodes!

&ctivation of the Interface Points themselves needs no lengthy introduction here

since there are many fine tets availa#le that spell-out every possi#le planetarycom#ination! 'tudents are referred to

particular individual, "hile a part of this "hole system, is usually more active

and concerned "ith one level of their lives than "ith the others (at least at any

    given time)!

Interface analysis has proved to #e a great help in locating the specific level(chakra or plane) and planet to "hich an individual naturally responds! nce this

s revealed, information is easily forthcoming of direct interest to the individual

concerning the particular plane of life and initiation in "hich they are findingthemselves involved!

3or a more complete description of these various planets or chakras -- please see

my article >&strology of the 2eart7 The hakras> on this su#ect! The #asic idea

may #e epressed here in one sentence7 the key to the outer "ill al"ays #e innner or in other "ords7 the key to a given planet (chakra) "ill usually #e that

planet "hose or#it is immediately "ithin or inside the planet in question!

& perfect clear eample7 the planet immediately "ithin the *arth.s or#it is ;enus

and for all time the *arth has #een ever concerned "ith ;enus or love and, in

fact, divine love has al"ays #een put forth #y the "orld.s spiritual lights as thevery key to life on this planet! This is equally true for all planets from and

ncluding 'aturn into the 'un! (The outer planets have a different significance)! Itshould #e understood that, although "e live #y virtue of our #irth on this planet,

"e are not #y that fact automatically in full realization of our *arth eistence! In

fact, initiation "ithin inner planes (planets) is a gradual process of graduation #y

degrees! The maority of us have great difficulty "orking through (for instance)the 'aturn ('atan), ?upiter (succession), and ars (marriage) to even get in

possession of the *arth (the 2eart or child) much less graduating to the inner

planes of ;enus (divine love), ercury (light of love), and on to the 'un ('elf or4111-petaled chakra)!

&s remote and >flo"ery> (or vague or a#stract) as this language may seem to

some readers, it is important to understand these various planes and to realize

that "e in fact find ourselves endlessly involved, evolving, and revolving throughthis life! &t any one time a given individual "ill #e taken up "ith concerns of a

given plane! It #ecomes of great importance to the counseling astrologer to

accurately indicate at "hat level and plane the life is #eing etended or occurringand to "hat plane the individual may #e referred to for light and a clear idea as to

    the questions they may have!

In practice the role of the astrologer often involves directing and referring

ndividuals to the level or chakra "hich happens to #e the key to their currentife.s concerns! Interface analysis can help astrologers to more accurately and

"ithout personal #ias determine the levels or planes to "hich a given individual

responds as "ell as the key or level to #e recommended as a "ay to inner planes! In the past, astrologers have often #een limited and restricted in their practice to

those chakras or planets in "hich they personally may have taken initiation

(understand from personal eperience) and they have primarily "orked "iththose clients "ho eist on an outer planet or plane of initiation from their o"n

    evel!

  • 8/13/2019 Planetary Nodes

    7/25

It is possi#le using Interface analysis for the astrologer to accurately determine

and to direct a client to the appropriate level or plane regardless of "hether he or

she personally has (or has not) taken that initiation! To do this "ith accuracydemands a relatively a#solute frame of reference to "hich all matters may #e

referred! The simple structure of our solar system is such a frame and "hen

properly understood and rigorously applied much of "hat amounts to guess"ork

n the practice of astrology is removed!

The Astrologer of this A!uarian Age

I "ould like to mention #riefly some #enefits of a more personal and yet still

a#solutely useful nature! To cite a personal instance in the life of this author7 In

my natal heliocentric configurations, I have the planets ;enus=Neptune=?upitermutually inclined to each other! & source of concern and confusion (especially in

younger years) for me involved encounters "ith those "ith "hich I didn.t #y

nature get along! 'ome folks took a dislike to me! I al"ays "ondered "hy and Ispent an un"arranted amount of energy and time searching myself to discover

"hat had I done to offend or to deserve such a reception!

It "as most satisfying and fascinating to discover in the helio natal charts of

these individuals "ho seemingly took offense to myself that they had one ormore planets at the changing-line or square point to my natal ?upiter=;enus or

Neptune! In other "ords, they "ere most definitely disinclined to the planets to

"hich I "as #y nature perfectly inclined! 'eeing this spelled out to me in these

natal configurations has helped me to realize the simple fact of thesenclinations=disinclinations and to let pass the opportunities to search and

question myself as to the fault on either part for the event! n the other hand, I

"as startled to discover that in almost every instance, my closest personal friendsall had the same planets at the same degree and that this degree "as an Interface

point that "as perfectly complementary (inclined) to myself! This "as (in myife) a rather remarka#le discovery and one "ith the most practical kind of

#enefits to me as to the time and energy previously "asted in a useless self-

    eamination! *nough said!

    A "ystem of Notation

It remains for us to discuss a convenient system of notation #y "hich to representthese Interface points as they are found in a given chart! 'uch a system must

nclude the planets themselves in their order from the 'un out"ards! & vertical

column (like the spinal column) is perhaps sym#olically the most correct! (3igure

    @)

Taking a particular natal or event chart (heliocentric only), "e eamine each

planet.s position and compare these positions to those in one of the ta#les at the

end of this article! $e "ill "ant to notate activity at #oth the Interface points and

the square or changing-line points! To the right of the vertical column "e notateall planets that #y transit at an interface point! $e dra" the sym#ol for the planet

(at the Interface point) net to the sym#ol of the planet in "hich plane the transit

    occurs!
