From The Principal’s Office

It was a bonus to have some amazing sunsets and sunrises and an extra day to enjoy last weekend. I hope families enjoyed some extra time together to do something special. Munch, Munch, Munch Pack Goodness in your Lunch Box

Planning ahead is the key to providing a healthy lunchbox for your children when they are school. Like most of us, children appreciate some variety: sandwiches, wraps, rolls, cut up ready to eat fruit and vegies, yoghurts, pieces of cheese, dried fruit, as well as muffins, slices, and the occasional treat. There is some interesting and alarming data from the Gippsland area which is well worth considering …

Only 54.2% of children aged 4-12 are meeting daily recommendations for fruit intake and 3.9% meeting recommendations for vegetable intake. 18.8% of children aged 5-12 years exceeded the recommended screen time of two hours. We know healthy children learn better so let’s give all children the chance to achieve their very best by eating well and getting active.

Gearing Up for the School Fair The excitement of the School Fair is building every day this week with donations and final arrangements been put in place in this last week of preparations. Thank you to those hard working parents who have put in many hours to plan and organise for this event this year. This is a major fundraiser for this year and has been well supported by local businesses. The money raised from the fair will go directly into purchasing more technological devices to enable all students have easy access to reliable equipment across the curriculum. We really do need more helpers on the day to lend a hand rather than expect the few to do all the work. Please let us know if you can help out, if even for a short time.

Our Chaplain Hello everyone! I was at a church gathering on Sunday and the question was asked- what do you do when faced with difficulties? It was an interesting question because it did not say what do you do if you are faced with hardship, but when you face difficulties. As you can imagine the responses were varied. There was one response though that has stuck with me. An older lady started to share about the difficulties her parents (now passed away) faced living through a world war. She shared how her parents had a shortage of food, the loss of life and the general upheaval to family life during those years. This lady shared that her parents faced the difficulties by supporting each other and supporting others in their local community. No –one could take the hardships away, they had to learn to get through the very trying times and needed each other to do it. There is so much talk about building resilience in children. But what I think it means is supporting kids when they are going through hard times, so they can bounce back and take on life. It doesn’t mean, taking that hard time away or ‘fixing’ it so that everything is right. It means giving our children the skills they need to get through the situation. Because we are all different, we are all going to have different ways of coping in life and different areas we need support in. One of your children may need support with their maths, one may need support separating from you at school, one may need no support at all (at the moment!) but what we need to do is to support our children through it. Primary schools generally and particularly Drouin West welcome the opportunity to partner with you with whatever situation your child needs help with. Please come and talk to us if you need some help getting your child through some tough times. Building resilience can result in raising courageous and independent children. Thanks to all those who have returned parenting notes. I will let you know as soon as I hear from Parentzone-Anglicare when our parenting course will be starting. Thanks to those who have returned their children's Seasons for Growth permission notes. I am placing children in groups now and these groups will take place over term 2, 3 and 4. I will send home confirmation notes when it is sorted.

Take care! Wendy Ronalds School Chaplain
