Planning Apps 1.0 is an initiative of the summer 2013 Special Topics in Urban Planning course in the School of Planning, College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati. It is the product
for practice. This is not an exhaustive list of apps because new apps are being developed daily, but this list will help
The research began with participation in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) called TechniCity. TechniCity was a
further by exploring apps that apply to specializations of urban planning, but found that there were multiple apps that could be used for multiple purposes.
“App” is short for application. Traditionally, this was a generic term for any standalone bit of software that runs on top of a computer’s operating system. In information technology, an application is the use of a technology, system, or product designed to streamline efficiency. There are different kinds of apps. there are applications for desktop computers, called desktop applications, and those for mobile devices, called mobile apps. There are also web applications requiring the use of the Internet. Apps are becoming more widely used on mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones, which are changing how people interact with cities.
that an app can help you do that, whether you are a Planner or not. Planning Apps 1.0 is intended for anyone interested in exploring and learning about places. A few examples of what you might learn about include economic development, demographics, real estate, community engagement and related topics. This resource is intended to
broad swath of current apps and their potential uses.

Using this app is as easy as snapping a photo. Just select any color from within a picture and you can match it to a Sherwin-Williams paint color, get coordinating colors, or create custom palettes. Search, browse, adjust, save, and even share colors.

Description- Community PlanIt is a project of the Engagement Game Lab at Emerson College. Description: This app allows you to collect, record, and export the demographics, including the race, gender, and age group, of the people at a meeting or event. Upon opening the app, you can set up a meeting and easily slide through and tally the demographics of the people in attendance. This is useful to planners and officials holding public meetings when assessing the diversity of public and community engagement analysis. For ease of analysis, all of the data is exported as a .csv file, which can be opened by programs like Microsoft Excel or imported into a Geographic Information System.

Institute of Health’s known chemical database. Using U.S. street addresses to create and maintain a personal place history, My Place History allows you to gather general information about the distance to specific events, hazards, or exposures, and unlock a wealth of geographically relevant health information. Description- Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. Facebook is primarily known as a social network tool, however it can also be used as a community engagement tool within the planning profession. Description-This app allows you to submit a claim of housing discrimination for review by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity. Your fair housing rights are protected under Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act). If those rights have been violated, you can use this app to file a claim of housing discrimination with HUD.
Description- This app can be used in place of a more expensive handheld GPS device. It allows you to mark waypoints when you are out surveying a site and save them directly onto a map. Then you are able to calculate direction, distance, and area. All of these locations can be saved and exported as a .DXF file (used in AutoCAD) for further analysis and work. The data that you collect can also be transformed to any coordinate system for use in a Geographic Information System (GIS).

Description- With this app, commercial real estate professionals can quickly identify retailers who are likely to benefit from opening a new location in a particular area. Description- Sitegeist is an app that helps you learn more about your surroundings. Using census data, the app presents solid data in a simple at-a-glance format to help you tap into the pulse of your location anywhere in the United States. Beyond demographic data, the app offers insights on housing, popular spots through Yelp, and even local weather. The project presents localized information with straightforward infographics so you can get back to enjoying your neighborhood. The app was created by the Sunlight Foundation with input from IDEO and support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. This is a great app if you are in an area you have never been and are curious the social makeup of that area or even the area around your home. This app can be used to find a plethora of information regarding the location you are currently at.

Description- StreetSeen is a project of The Ohio State University which extends Google Street View in order to allow people to experiment with evaluating cities. Description- This app is meant for traffic data collection. It collects the number of movements, trip generations, parking, vehicle classification, and pedestrian and bicycle counts. It is collaborative, so multiple surveyors can access the same information and add to it. This kind of accounting and recording tool would be easy to use during a transportation planner's traffic study and numbers collected can be saved for comparison in later projects.

Description- Umi is a new, Rhino-based design environment for architects and urban planners interested in modeling the environmental performance of neighborhoods and cities regarding operational energy use, walkability and daylighting potential. Umi is being developed by the Sustainable Design Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with support from the National Science Foundation and the MIT Energy Initiative.
Description- Walk Score gives a score based on an area’s walkability. Walk Score has a scoring system algorithm based on factors such as distance to amenities like schools, restaurants, parks, etc. The other part of Walk Score shows available apartments for rent and the associated score. Walk Score’s mission is to promote walkable neighborhoods to improve our environment, our health, and our economy. They believe that walkable places make you happier and healthier.
