Chancellor Pradeep KhoslaPradeep K. Khosla, a distinguished academic leader and electrical and computer engineer, began his tenure as UC San Diego’s eighth chancellor on August 1, 2012. Chancellor Khosla previously served as dean of engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. There, he set the strategic direction for undergraduate and graduate education and research, and was elected University Professor, the highest distinction a faculty member could achieve. He also initiated undergraduate curriculum

reform, successful diversity efforts, multidisciplinary research centers and graduate offerings, and international programs.Chancellor Khosla is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Engineering, an Honorary Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, and a Fellow of the American Association of Artificial Intelligence. He is also the recipient of numerous awards for his leadership, teaching, and research, including the 2012 Light of India Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the George Westinghouse Award for contributions to improve engineering teaching. In 2012, he was named as one of the 50 most influential Indian-Americans by SiliconIndia. He received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, and his master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon.

Dr. Gerardo ArellanoDr. Gerardo N. Arellano received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in the department of Comparative Ethnic Studies. An interdisciplinarian and cultural historian by training with significant administration experience, his work focuses on the intersections between transnational popular culture, Mexican diaspora, and U.S. cultural history. His research interests include post-secondary educational achievement and developing institutional capacities at the undergraduate and graduate level, with

a focus on Chicano academic and leadership success. Dr. Arellano’s work has been published in the Berkeley Human Rights Review and Borderlines peer reviewed academic journals. He has over 15 years of experience working with underserved students of color at the community, high-school, and university levels. In addition to his faculty responsibilities in the departments of American and Chicano studies at CSU Fullerton, he was the graduate learning specialist coordinator of program research and monitoring for the EPOCHS grant (a 2.8 million dollar federal grant designed to increase the academic success, enrollment and retention rate of Latinos in graduate school at CSUF). Dr. Arellano loves to work with students and he has extensive experience advising and collaborating with graduate and undergraduate student organizations.
