Environmental

Planning & PermittingWho We Are

MWH is a leading global consultant

in the environmental, water and

waste infrastructure sectors providing

premier consultancy, construction and

programme management services to

government agencies, local authorities,

multinational companies and industrial

clients worldwide

Founded over 100 years ago and now

with over 7,500 staff and offices in 35

countries, MWH has a long standing

tradition of environmental excellence and

a culture of challenge and innovation

which we have consistently used to

deliver best value. In the UK, MWH

has 1,800 staff based in 16 offices

throughout the U.K. and by linking to our

worldwide network our projects benefit

from our local knowledge as well as

global experience regardless of size.

Delivering Environmental Excellence

MWH is committed to the principles of

sustainability and are pioneers in solving

environmental, climate change and

energy challenges. Our environmental

specialists provide experience and

knowledge of the increasingly complex

planning and permitting systems as

well as the wider, environmental, social,

economic and political context within

which they fit.

MWH’s integrated planning and

permitting team has been specifically

created to provide an environmental

consultancy service which allows our

clients to benefit from the synergies

(including lower costs) gained from

having planning and environmental

permitting services provided by the same

team. Their experience and skills have

helped many clients to achieve effective

solutions to complex issues.

Partnership Approach

We have a partnership approach to our

projects working with our clients rather

than for them, to deliver technically

excellent, commercial and pragmatic

solutions which minimise risk and

costly delays.

Our collaborative approach extends to

working with key stakeholders; be they

local councils and community groups or

other professional advisors to ensure all

parties are fully engaged in the project

and understand the often complex

environmental challenges involved.

The Skills YOU Need

We have the flexibility and capability

to meet all of your environmental

needs however large or small. We

can provide an individual specialist to

address a specific local need or we can

provide a multidisciplinary team of in-

house specialists to address all of the

environmental challenges associated

with your project.

As our UK team are integrated into

our global environmental compliance

team, multinational companies can be

assured of a consistent service where

ever their project is located.

Our Proven Expertise

MWH is one of the original members

of the Institute of Environmental

Management & Assessment (IEMA)

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

Quality Mark.

The EIA Quality Mark provides

assurances to clients that MWH is

committed to effective practice, and

the delivery of a high quality service

and product, when leading and co-

ordinating EIAs.

To maintain the EIA Quality Mark

standards IEMA undertakes an annual

review of members’ compliance with

agreed EIA commitments.

Following such a review an

independent assessor stated

MWH’s “EIA management is

very good” and that “adding

value to clients was clearly

part of company thinking”

Our environmental specialists are

members of some of the most

respected environmental bodies in the

UK including:

• Institute of Environmental

Management and Assessment (IEMA)

• Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI)

• Chartered Institute of Waste

Management (CIWM)

• Chartered Institute of Environmental

Health (CIEH)

• Chartered Institute of Water and

Environmental Management (CIWEM)

All of these organisations require

their members to be fully conversant

with new environmental regulations,

tools and technologies. Our team

combines this knowledge with

experience to deliver a range of high

quality environmental projects across

a variety of sectors as the following

projects demonstrate.

Environmental Permitting

& Compliance Services

Client: United Utilities PLC

MWH has been providing environmental

compliance and permitting services to

United Utilities since 2005. In that time

our planning and permitting team have

prepared and submitted over 25 permit

applications for wastewater treatment

sites and assessed each installation

against industry BAT. In addition, our

team has worked alongside the client

to develop a bespoke Environmental

Asset Management tool to demonstrate

compliance with BAT requirements.

The tool has been approved by the

Environment Agency.

Kings Street Gas Storage Project

(Pipelines) Client: King Street Energy

(Cheshire) Ltd

MWH produced an EIA for 58km of

pipelines transporting water from the

Mersey Estuary at Bromborough to

King Street Northwich, and returning

saltwater produced from mining

processes back to the Mersey Estuary

within a SSSI and downstream of the

Mersey Estuary Ramsar and SPA. When

Wirral Borough Council considered the

EIA for the pipelines in 2008, it was

noted that:-

Mid Wales Connection Project

Client: National Grid Electricity

MWH planning and permitting team

is producing the EIA and assisting

National Grid with its stakeholder

consultation process relating to the

routeing of a 400kV transmission

line from a new hub substation in

mid-Wales to a grid connection in

Shropshire, some 50km away. The

transmission line is required to connect

a number of proposed wind farms in

Mid Wales to the National Grid.

These activities will support a

subsequent Development Consent

Order (DCO) application for Nationally

Significant Infrastructure Project.

“The quality of the

submissions put forward

through the ES and the

professionalism the Council

has encountered was of the

highest standard they have

ever seen”.
