Abstract

TheSpaceGeodesySatelliteLaserRangingsystem(SGSLR)isbeingdesignedwiththegoaloffullautomation. LessonslearnedonNGSLRand othersystems arebeingimplementedinSGSLR. AutomationwillbeachievedinstageswiththefirststagebeingremoteoperationalcapabilityattheMcDonaldandNy-Alesund SGSLRsystemswhenmanyoftheoperationaltaskswillalreadybeautomated. Ultimately,SGSLRwillsendscienceandmonitoringdatato,andreceivecommandsfrom, theSpaceGeodesyNetworkOperationCenter (SGNOC),similartothewayspacecraftnowoperate. Thehardwareandsoftwareneededto achievefullautomation,andthestagesof implementationwillbediscussed.

u ParticipatingonanFAARegulationCommitteeandleadingtheefforttomodifytheregulationsforoutdoorlaserusetoincludeautomatedlaseroperations.Neededtobeabletore-enablethelaserwithoutahuman.

u PlanninganddesigningthecomputersystemstoensuretheyarecompliantwithincreasinglystringentNASA(andNorwegian)ITSecurityrequirements.Automatedsystemsmustbeextremelysecure.

u Workingtowardautomatedcloudrecognitionalgorithmandsoftware.Weneedtoautomaticallydeterminewhentoswitchtrackingtoanotherpartofthesky.

u Workingourwaythroughthedecisionpathsandwhat-ifsofanautomatedsystemtoensurewehaveallofsafetyandallofsecurityplannedforandcovered,andgettherequiredNASAapprovals.

PathtoFullAutomationu Initialoperationduringinstallationwillbelocal(operatorin

theSGSLRshelteroperatingsystemthroughRAT).u Duringcommissioningthesystemisexpectedtoberemotely

operatedfromnearbySGPoperationsbuildingusingRemoteAccessTerminal(RAT).Testingoftheautomatedoperationswilltakeplacepart-timewiththeoperatorwatchingandpart-timeonitsown.

u Aftercommissioningthesystemswillbeoperatedremotelyformultipledaylightshiftsperweek,whileallowingthesystemtoperformautomatedoperations,mostlyatnight.

u Theknowledgegainedduringtheseperiodswillallowoptimizationoftheautomatedoperationsresultinginfullautomationinthefuture.

u EngineersatGoddardpickupreportsintheiremailsonwhathappenedateachsystemandthepreviousdayperformance,aswellastrendsoverthelastweek,month,year.

u Engineershavethecapabilitytoremotelystopoperationsatastationandtorunremotediagnostics.

u On-sitetechniciansperformroutinemaintenanceonSGSLRandVGOS.Ifneeded,engineerscantalktechniciansthroughmorediagnosticsandsomerepairs,watchingthroughstreamingvideo.Mostsubsystemswillbedesignedtohavecomponentsreplacedwithon-sitesparesorsparesshippedfromthecentralfacility.
