Welcome

Welcome to our 2019 / 2020 catalogue and thank you for your business during 2018. We hope 2019 is at least as positive as 2018 and the industry continues along a positive growth path.

We cannot go too far these days without mentioning Brexit, but I am happy to say I believe we have done all possible to ensure we are prepared. We export to many countries outside of Europe already and I believe we have acquired the specific know how and disciplines to deal with whatever comes our way. We have been working on ensuring our plants will be widely available in the UK and continue working relationships with other UK young plant companies in a positive collaboration. On continental European, USA and Japanese markets we have experienced growth on all ranges this year and we continue to use Netherlands as our shipping hub for EU and direct shipping from Dublin to USA and Japan by air. We are continuing to strengthen our ranges of high impact, hardy foliage plants for containers and all of these are ideal for a UK / Ireland climate as well as continental European conditions. Bio-security has been a continual focus for us over the last 5 years. As we evolve our strategy as a niche specialist producer, we apply tight, self-imposed as well as national and EU regulations and only plants raised from tissue culture are brought onto the nursery from external sources. All our EverColor® and other big line mother plants for cuttings and division are produced in our own facilities in Ireland. Since December 2018 our EverColor® brand is now officially accepted as an EU registered trademark. Strong interest has remained in vibrant, easy care patio container foliage plants for solitary and mixed planters and our EverColor® series is going from strength to strength internationally and sales numbers growing positively. Consumers generally are showing more interest in health benefits of plants and plant-based food and we are evolving product lines to work with this trend. Our new Paradise sweet potato range being one of these initiatives. Keep tuned in as we evolve more programs that add

value to the consumers spend as well as our nursery client’s margins. Last year’s catalogue introduction mentioned our track record in innovation and I am pleased to say we continue to evolve new products and place new product development at the forefront of our daily effort. We can improve this effort still as a specialist focus and we have structured our business to do so in the last twelve months putting more specialization into our food crop development which we will have more news about later in 2019. This year we will also roll out a new website and branding in our company and this work is well under way. Our laboratory and nursery research continues to progress and to evolve new plant lines for the coming years. We have added more lines and increased the volume capabilities to respond to demand and new consumer opportunities. I am looking forward to 2019 as a year of great change but constant gradual progress in line with a clear changing consumer demand, led by some fundamental shifts in consumer knowledge access, some positive, some misleading the consumer. You are very welcome to discuss any of your specific requirements regarding plants or trend collaborations with us directly. We look forward to working with you in the future and engaging with you to help in any way we can in the coming years.

EverColor®

In 2014 - 2015 season we introduced our branded EverColor® collection which was the culmination of 8 years work on this range and the end of a beginning for this branded range of sedges.

I am pleased to introduce during 2019 another selection of EverColor® called Everglow, especially for Autumn containers. The collection now comprises of 10 different evergreen Carex selections developed at FitzGerald Nurseries. This fantastic collection can be grown at low temperatures in well ventilated conditions through the winter making it a low energy crop. We can share our growing tips with our young plant customers. For the grower the EverColor® collection presents a fantastic, easy to grow, uniform and programmable

group of plants for seasonal offer in a range of pot sizes. EverColor® varieties can be marketed in 2L, 3L or 5L containers for use as patio plant, single planter specimens or instant landscape solutions. In 10,5cm EverColor® can be used in combination with spring, summer or autumn planters with Heuchera, Viola, Primula or other container bedding plants. For the consumer the EverColor® is a collection of easy to grow, colourful foliage plants ideal for using in containers, living walls and garden borders alone or in combination with seasonal flowering plants.

MyPlant®

It is now over 10 years since MyPlant® was voted best garden plant concept by European Garden press members at Plantarium 2008.

We were of course delighted and honoured by this prestigious award however with the great economic crash that followed we had to bear down and work hard to ensure this niche range and our MyPlant® brand kept its philosophy and core focus on plants with attributes in keeping with this philosophy. Most of these plants are produced from tissue culture. This makes them more expensive as young plants than cutting produced plants but fetching a premium in retail environment returning more profit. Our MyPlant® collection brings together a range of dramatic, functional and colourful patio container plants and high impact foliage plants. These plants

can be used to great effect in small garden spaces and drought tolerance has been considered in the selection process, especially for our container plant selections. MyPlant® is our focus for innovation in those special plants for which FitzGerald Nurseries has become known in many markets. We look forward to introducing many more wonderful trend setting plants through our MyPlant® category over the coming years. MyPlant® is more than a name. It has become a process for the business to evaluate, trial and develop these very different plants and bring them to our customers worldwide.

As a company operating on the edge of Europe FitzGerald Nurseries more than any company in the industry must always be conscious of our need to innovate. This consciousness has continually driven the ethos and the need for innovation: “Necessity is the mother of Invention”. During this period our focus on foliage plants for outdoor spaces, in particular garden containers, has evolved and our production specialties have evolved to match this niche area. FitzGerald Nurseries is a niche production focused company, we do not do A-Z. We focus on the plant, its suitability to our niche market, the trend it fits with and its suitability to our production strengths. However, we must also find other strengths and we must have a safe route to market.

Over the last 10 years we have worked hard on route to market and we distribute our plants effectively through the Netherlands to all parts of Europe and from Dublin Airport to USA, Japan, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, Middle East and North Africa. We have also turned our remoteness into a strength! Since January 2017 we have developed

our own bio-security strategy system to protect our production against disease and pest contamination. FitzGerald Nurseries does not import any plant material except material produced under sterile conditions in a laboratory - prevention is better than cure. Only mother plants for tissue culture production of new plant varieties are imported into a special quarantined area beside the nursery and our laboratory. Our production in recent years has focused on our main core competencies and much of our production is pre-booked ahead of production. While we carry all our own mother plants we generally only produce to order or order predictions from customers. We have three production sites in Ireland, two nurseries in Kilkenny and one laboratory production location in Co. Wexford and our specialist joint venture sweet potato company in Portugal, Nativaland, handles all agricultural sweet potato production and sales. FitzGerald Nurseries does not trade young plants from other young plant suppliers as we see our company mission as a specialist supplier to our nursery and other young plant company partners.

Plant Production

Over 28 years of production we have gone through phases of change reflecting market demand changes and competitiveness.

Through this strategy we have developed a stunning range of plant varieties focused on our core production competencies and market perception. Every year we introduce at least one of our own bred varieties and several varieties from our breeder partners. The 2019 season is no exception!

During 2019 we will introduce our most recent innovation - the Paradise Sweet Potato collection exclusive to FitzGerald. This range is a major breakthrough in Ornamental edible genetics and resulting from 6 years work with breeders at Louisiana State University to evolve fully productive

sweet potatoes with high impact colour foliage. Watch out for this range marketed in Europe through FitzGerald Nurseries and in USA through our partner Concept Plants. We are also introducing a number of other foliage / flowering plants such as a Russelia range of 4 varieties, Phormium ‘Blondie’ and Carex ‘Everglow’ now in full production. ‘Blondie’ in our opinion will be an outstanding addition to our MyPlant® range and we are convinced it will become an industry best seller. Later in 2019 we will have further additions to our expanding food plant ranges from our Beotanics specialist research activities.

Variety Development

At FitzGerald Nurseries we have evolved an innovation led strategy and our business is heavily focused on developing our own new varieties as well as working with like minded breeders and breeder representatives worldwide.

Irish Primroses™

Our Irish Primrose™ range is continuing to gain recognition amongst the garden media and public as a truly unique and ironically a somewhat innovative step in the development of the primrose in commercial horticulture.

Despite the fact that this style of primrose dates back four hundred years (right back to Shakespearean/Elizabethan times) as a garden trend, commercial Horticulture has lost sight of the beginnings of the primrose as a garden plant of great significance. Our Irish Primrose™ collection

is made up of two distinctive groups. One with distinctively chocolate foliage turning many heads with this uniquely Irish originated dark foliage and contrasting flowers. And one with green foliage and masses of flowers ideal also for mass planting.

The Chef’s Farm

The idea to produce sweet potato like many good ideas came from a question and a challenge: “Is it possible to grow sweet potato in Ireland and Northern Europe?”

The general consensus was “No”, but the question deserved a proper answer. This thought combined with general awareness of the importance of healthy food crops all had impact on the thoughts leading

into the sweet potato project. From there on it was only a small step to add other food crops into this range and we will continue to look out for more.
