Advanced Foot and Ankle Care

October is the month when people’s thoughts tend to lean toward spooky things. Plantar warts… are not all that frightening, really. But they do tend to be quite unpleasant to have, and in some cases even painful.

What’s going on with your feet (or your child’s feet) when you start seeing rough, grainy bumps and patches appear? For plantar warts, the source is a virus.

MEET YOUR DOCTOR

Dr. Harvey R. Danciger’s practice is founded on three basic principles: trust, caring and a commitment to excellence in podiatry.

We view each patient as an individual. We view our relationship with our patients as a sacred trust and work hard everyday to deserve that trust. Patients come first!

Plantar warts result when certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) invade the upper layers of skin on the foot (the word “plantar” simply means “of the foot”). The virus can enter through any sort of cut or weakness of the skin, even on a level that you can’t see.

• People who are more likely to contract plantar warts are:

• Children and older Individuals, who both tend to have weaker immunity.

• Others who have weak immunity due to certain conditions.

Those who frequently walk barefoot in high-traffic areas where the virus tends to be more prevalent, such as locker rooms, showers, and gyms.

In addition to the fleshy, grainy growths and thick skin, there tend to be additional telltale signs:

• You may see little black specks among the lesions. These are not “seeds” as some people say, but rather clotted capillaries.

• The lesions will also tend to interrupt the natural lines that run along the skin of your foot.

As noted earlier, plantar warts might hurt, but not always. They will more likely cause pain if they appear in a high pressure area of the foot, such as the heel.

If your warts are uncomfortable, bleeding, or otherwise have any sort of unexpected appearance to them, you should contact us about them right away. (Of course, you should also call us if you simply don’t like them and want to get rid of them as soon as possible!)

What Causes Plantar Warts?

How Do I Know It’s a Wart?

Page 3: Plantar Warts – When Things Go Bump on Your Foot...things. Plantar warts… are not all that frightening, really. But they do tend to be quite unpleasant to have, and in some cases

Part of what makes warts so susceptible to home remedy lore is that, left on their own, they can eventually go away. This can take a long time – up to a year and even beyond – but it can happen.

So when people try a variety of concoctions and techniques to get rid of warts, sometimes the results they see are just the warts disappearing on their own. Naturally, someone might expect it was the remedy that did the trick instead, and then it gets shared all over Facebook.

However, there is very little proof from studies that attempted treatments such as duct tape, Listerine, or apple cider vinegar have much effect on plantar warts. We do not recommend them ourselves, but we also can’t stop you from trying them.

If you do want to attempt a home remedy, most pose no risk of harm. Please do not, however, attempt any treatment that involves irritating your skin or cutting it in any way. That can quickly lead to more trouble than you started with.

And if you have diabetes or poor circulation, you should not attempt any type of self-remedy at all. Your warts are best addressed by a professional to prevent any potentially dangerous complications.

If warts tend to go away on their own (eventually), is there any harm in waiting them out? Potentially, yes.

While the warts remain active, they have the potential to spread. This not only includes to other areas of your feet and body, but to other people as well. You don’t want to be blamed for someone else’s case of warts.

The sooner you begin to address plantar warts with professional treatment, the sooner they will no longer be a problem you or a loved one has to deal with.

Leave warts to cartoon witches. We will be happy to schedule an appointment with you to review your options for a case of plantar warts, and will take a look at any other skin or nail condition you might have as well.
