Overview of an industry on the moveBioeconomy, circular economy, biodiversity, sustainability,… Our day to day life is full of these words that represent as many opportunities as challenges. Challenges because we know that the only consistent framework in which we will develop long stan-ding activities is the one that will be compliant with the limits of our planet, that we feel everyday more and more under pressure.Opportunities, because we also face in our everyday life the need to transform any challenge into a positive outcome, because we know that we will not resolve today’s and tomorrow’s challenges with the tools that could be part of the problems. And biobased solutions can contribute to solving many of our common challenges.
In these times of volatility in many areas, from raw materials prices and availability to customers wishes and market trends, we are also more and more confronted to the diversity of com-peting solutions. Each solution tries to fulfi ll the evolving needs of customers, who have a more acute view on the product and its meaning and whose loyalty is to be constantly rejuvenated. The biobased solutions we want to promote have to demonstrate their accuracy, in terms of function, price, compliance with sustai-nable development. We see them getting closer to consumers. Some recent polling studies show how attractive these biobased solutions could be in the eyes of the consumers, once they are explained how different by essence they can be. Do we have the right words for this?
Plant Based summit 2019 will once again offer to all the actors of the biobased world to meet and build together a sound unders-tanding of what are the benefi ts of these solutions, how each one is facing and solving the different challenges on the markets as well as on technologies. It will be the unique opportunity to learn from each other’s successes and diffi culties or even failures, and

13:00 - 15:15Workshop
Conversion of sugar beet pulp components into value added products for home & personal care and performance materials
- Dr. Daan VAN ES, Senior Scientist for Organic Chemistry & Catalysis, WAGENINGEN UNIVERSITY & RESEARCH
In this session we will present our latest developments in the conversion of sugar beet pulp components into value added products for home & personal care and performance materials. We will show the latest results in pectin-based sulphur-free anionic surfactants, an innovative, green and sustainable processes for the production of galactaric acid and a unique bio-based chelating agent and building block. An important part of the session will be to learn from the audience what they expect and require from bio-based surfactants and other functional chemicals.Sponsored by: PULP2VALUE CONSORTIUM
15:15 - 17:30Workshop
When waste becomes design: How to make more money from a side-streams of sugar beet pulp
- Philippe WILLEMS, Founder and managing director, ORINEO
This session will present a strategy to create more value for side-streams from the agro- and food-industry by leveraging on their rational (functionality), emotional (colour, texture, odour, etc.) and intuitive (perception of the original feedstock) values. Various examples are presented to illustrate this approach, in particular from the BBI JU project Pulp2Value. Attention will also be given to the integration of this approach in biorefi nery concepts. A signifi cant part of the session will be to discuss the Pulp2Value approach from different perspectives with the participants.Sponsored by: PULP2VALUE CONSORTIUMIMPORTANT NOTICE: This workshops will be held the day prior to the event’s opening. Please note that the access will be granted and free of charge for everyone.
