Steven Jobs introduced the Apple II in 1977

This was the first personal computer marketed for home use, and it cost four times more than a personal computer costs
today
Rapid growth of technology since 1977, and it isn’t likely to slow down Details
Since 1977, computers have become part of many aspects of life, and the Internet has experienced explosive growth.
Do the Math
Details
Consider when your parents were born. How old were they when the Apple II was introduced?
THINK
Learning can be easier when you’re younger, and that is part of the reason adults have difficulty with technological devices. You are young and computer use is
second nature to you because you have grown up with technology.
THINK
How are you going to keep up with each technological breakthrough reported in the media or hyped by the marketplace?
Topic Is about …
Adults and technology
Many adults lack the skills to successfully operate computers and other technology

A Day No Pigs Would Die
How a boy (Rob) matures as he learns to deal with death
Different kinds of death affect how we respond to it. How we respond to different kinds of death shows how mature we are.
Some deaths are natural & easier to accept than others
Some deaths are senseless & difficult to understand & accept
Some deaths are necessary but still difficult to deal with
Saving Mr. TannerÕs cow, Apron, from death
Watching a crow kill a frog
Watching a hawk kill a rabbitShooting a gray squirrel for fun
RobÕs fatherÕs death
Letty Phillips drowns her child
Letty Phillips commits suicide
HussyÕs death after being weaseled
Slaughtering the pig, Pinky, for food for the winter. Pinky was RobÕs companion.
Acceptance of this kind of death showÕs maturity.
Non-acceptance of this kind of death (and wanting to prevent it) showÕs maturity.
Acceptance of this kind of death showÕs maturity.

Always Sometimes Never
peaceful resistance
using non-violent ways to protest and change unfair laws or policies
Resist as a way to draw attention to the problem
Resist using peaceful tactics
Addressing a law, practice, or policy that is unfair or unjust
Requires many to participate for it to be effective
Reactions to it are violent
Takes several times to work
Must take the consequences of your actions (go to jail)
Make more enemies that friends
Never use it just to get your way.
Never use violence or harsh language.
Never works if you just do it by yourself.
Peaceful resistance can work to change unfair laws, but you need support from others, and you need to plan on it working slowly.

Class system (classes to stay )
Competition ( at all costs)
Largest & fastest ever
Don’t need many life boats because ship
“Unsinkable” (over-reliance on )
1 steel hull --too thin &
Didn’t heed ice because didn’t need to worry about it
Rich - upper deck (luxury)
Middle class - middle decks
Lower class - lowest part of ship (steerage)- not valued
Rich - highly valued, thus more
More luxury = less
Fastest speed to break record crossing time = unable to
Largest ship = more
Broadest space (thus more attractive)= less life boats

Key Topicis about... Government Systems
Unitary
Central government has ultimate power
State & local government have limited or no power
Independent states have their own power
Central government handles only power granted to it by the states
No nations have this now
Compromise between national & state governments
A mix of unitary & confederal, but Federal law is supreme.
Federal law cannot override state & local law unless they conflict with Fed. law
Confederal Federal
'uni' = one ...as in only one power at the "top"
Republicans would like for the U.S. gov. to be a lot more like this
...different ways governments are structured or organized
Most countries have this form of government
* Articles of Confederation* Confederate States of Am.
United States today
Some approaches to government are better than others.

The Merchant of Venice
The Bond The Three Caskets The Rings
Custom = leave part of body (limb) as guarantee of loan
Antonio accepts bond of pound of flesh near his heart
Antonio doesnÕt count on shipwreck
When itÕs time to pay, Shylock doesnÕt want money anymore. Feels despised & seeks revenge
Doctor finds a way out so that Shylock will accept the money & not the flesh
Portia needs to choose a husband & decides to marry the one who will find her portrait in the casket that she has chosen.
Prince of Morocco & Prince of Arragon seek Portia out for her money & not for herself. They choose most valuable caskets & lose.
Bassanio wants Portia, chooses lead casket, & wins her hand
Portia & Bassanio are married
Portia & Nerissa want to prove their husbands faithfulness.
They trick husbands into giving ring to doctor and his clerk (who are really Portia & Nerissa in disguise).
Husbands prove their loyalty.
Each gives husbands a ring on condition that they will always wear them.
Three ŅloveÓ stories in one play that Shakespeare uses to teach lessons about good and evil.
Shakespeare uses these three stories to emphasize that usury (Skylock) and greed (PortiaÕs suitors) are vices, and as such, must always be punished. Good must triumph over evil.
