Since developed in 1953, HISAKA Plate Heat Exchangers have been widely used in almost all industrial fields due to the compact design and the high heat transfer efficiency.

We can offer a wide range of standard heat exchanges from0.18m2 up to 2,500m2 in total heat transfer area to meet the

diversified and individual needs.

Fundamental constructionCorrosion resistant thin plates of stain-less steel, titanium etc., are press-formed into heat transfer plates. A sealgasket is attached onto each plate.These plates are suspended from guidebar and bolted together between a fixedframe and a movable frame. Constantspacing between the plates allow thefluid to flow through. The inlet andoutlet connections are fixed onto eitherthe fixed frame or the movable frame.

Heat transfer platesEach heat transfer plate is corrugatedto various patterns to increase itsstrength and heat transfer area. Fur-thermore, the corrugation creates highturbulence and thereby achieve highheat transfer co-efficient. The plate isprovided with passage hole on eachcorner. Each plate is tight-sealed witha gasket fitted in its peripheralgroove.

Flow passageThe plates are divided into A-plate andB-plate, and a passage is formed be-tween these plates. The high tempera-ture fluid flows alternately and in theopposite direction of the other fluid.Thus high efficient transfer of heat isachieved through these plates.A-plate when reversed would becomeB-plate. As such only one type of platecan be used as A-plate and B-plate formost models.

High performanceThe overall heat transfer co-efficient (U-value) ranges from4,000 to 9,000 W(m2·ºC)in water application, since theplates corrugation provides high turbulent flow. This is oneof the reason why plate heat exchanger is so excellent inheat transfer co-efficient. In addition, this eddy flow alsoacts to prevent scales from generating on the plate surface.

Less required installation areaThe lightweight and compact construction reduces the re-quired installation space and the weight to 1/4 and 1/3 ofmulti-tube type heat exchanger respectively. In addition,lightweight and thin heating plate with less liquidhold facili-tates the installation work. The plate type can be disassem-bled for cleaning without isolating from main line, while themulti-tube type needs a additional space for removal of thetubes.

Prevention of liquid inter-mixingSpecial consideration is taken into the gasket so as to protectit from direct attack by liquid. Furthermore, the gasket is ofdouble-seal type so as to permit liquid draining outside theexchanger even in the case of liquid leak caused by its dete-rioration.

Easy change of required capacityAccording to change of the treating capacity, the heat trans-fer surface area can be incremented/de-cremented by un-screwing the plate clamping bolts and increasing or reducingthe number of plates.

Steam available for use as heat sourceThe use of synthetic rubber gasket of special compositionpermits to use steam as heat source, i.e operating tempera-ture range up to 180 ºC maximum.

Minimum heat radiationThe gasket acts to shield heat radiation from the vertical andhorizontal side of each plate. Heat is only radiated slightlyfrom the finned edges of this plate. In addition, the plate frontand rear in contact with the frame surface via air layer min-imizes heat radiation. This heat radiation is normally less than1% of the heating value.

Effective use of inlet-outlet temperaturedifference up to its extreme limit···The construction which permits heat-exchanging in perfectcounter flow with very high heat transfer efficiency makes itpossible to utilize the difference between hot fluid and coldfluid up to 1ºC and less.

The plates are specially selected from various patterns so as to achieve optimum area andcost effective heat exchanger for each unit. These plates can be classified into three maintypes, namely.1. "Herringbone pattern" such as LX-···, UX-···, RX-···, and SX-···2. "Wash board pattern "such as EX-···, and FX-···3. "Special wave pattern" such as GX-···, and YX-···

1. Herringbone patternThe herringbone design in the LX series had corrugations with pitch which are rough and deep. In SX series, the pitch are thefine and shallow, hence LX series are used in application where low NTU is required, and SX series are best suited for highNTU application. UX/RX-type is in between LX type and SX type.

NTU of 1.5 and less is generally referred to as low NTU, and 3.0 and above is considered as high NTU

2. Wash board patternThis type of plate has less metal to metal contact and is nor-mally applied to fluid containing fibers or sludge, FX seriesare mainly used in the food industry, whereas EX series areused more conventional application, the sterilizer serieswould be referred to later.

3. Special patternGX series was developed for the transfer of fluid containingmuch slurry, YX series is used exclusively for vapor con-densation. Please refer to the other section of specific de-tails.

Even in the same series, the heat transfer characteristics of plate differs depending on angle. Shallow angle is suited to highNTU, while steep angle to low NTU. When the plates corrugated in shallow and steep angles are arranged together in a unit,intermediate thermal characteristics can be achieved.

1. Universal gasketsPlate Heat Exchangers are used in almost all process industry, assuch the gaskets are specifically selected based on the operatingcondition of the fluid. A wide range of gaskets are available forHJSAKA Plate Heat Exchangers, such as NBR, EPDM, IIR,FPM, Silicon, etc.●Special Hisaka (S-1) glue shall be applied for bonding

2. Slit-In gasketsThese plate gaskets do not need adhesive. The slit-in gasket isnormally recommended for those applications where frequent re-placement of the gasket is required. Further, without the adhe-sives, odor is reduced. there is no adhesives odor for Food appli-cation.

3. PTFE cushion gasket (T.C.G)Though our own development, HISAKA pioneered the use ofPTFE cushion gaskets for the Plate Heat Exchanger. It is normal-ly used in applications where conventional synthetic rubberwould have limitations due to the corrosiveness of the fluid beinghandled. With this new development, the Plate Heat Exchangerscan be applied in much wider field than before due to the chemi-cal resistance and the durability of PTFE.●Special double adhesive tape shall be applied for bonding

Features1. Excellent chemical resistance against most chemical especially organic solvent.2. Due to the elastic center core of the T.C.G gasket, it does not require strong

tightening torque during the assembly of the unit. Thus reducing the chances ofplate deformation due to over tightening.

3. T.C.G gasket can be used for one side only, if the non-corrosive fluid is runningin the other side where conventional gasket can be used.

Recently, in Central Cooling System required capacity ofwater for cooling of process equipment is becoming very large.To cope with this trend, HISAKA has developed UX-l00series Plate Heat Exchangers having its connection nozzlediameter of 500mm, which is applicable for flowrate up to

5000 m3/h by single unit.The number of units to be connected in parallel in CentralCooling System can be reduced, thus installation space andcost can be saved.

UX-100 Series Plates

HISAKA use one of the largest Press Machines in the world to manufacture the UX-100 series plates.The 40,000 tons giant press machine allows the UX-100 series Jumbo size plate to be manufactured withthe following unique features.

Flexible Design* Plate length, several lengths available.* Corrugation Angle, 30º, 45º, 60º and their mixed combi-

nation.Thermal length of UX-100 plates are adjustable by its di-mensional length and corrugation angles. By having corru-gation angle of 45º, more compact design can be achievedrather than mixed combination of 30º and 60º only. By ad-justing the plate thermal lengths to the required thermalcondition, the heat transfer surface area can be optimized,thus reducing the cost of the Plate Heat Exchanger.

Less Fouling* Flat area near port holes eliminate fouling at opposite cor-

ner of plates.Large flow goes through the flat area to the opposite cornerof heat transfer area. This provides even flow distribution atentire surface areas which brings efficient heat transfer andeliminate fouling deposit.

Unique Corrugation* Vertical corrugation also helps even flow distribution.* Horizontal corrugation eliminate plate's bending.

To expect long periods continuous operation for seawater cooling application, we recommend:1) Sea water filter with opening of 3mm or less (for UX-100 series) is recommended.2) Electrolysis / Chlorine dozing is recommendable to be free from clogging of mussels and marine

growth. If it were not available, we would advise alternative ways depending on site condition.3) Periodical CIP cleaning without disassemble heat exchanger, is recommendable.

WELD WELDED PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER(WHE)High heat transfer co-efficiency owing to uniform distribu-tion of flow to entire heat transfer is by special plate's pat-tern. CONDENSERPLATE TYPE CONDENSER

Plate Type CondenserHISAKA developed the plate for exclusive application tovapor condensing in large volume. HISAKA plate typecondenser of lightweight and compact construction has theheat transfer performance of 2 to 3 times as high as the con-ventional multi-tube type and, in addition, their required in-stallation space and weight are respectively 1/2 to 1/3 of themulti-tube type. Corrosion resistant metal such as stainlesssteel, titanium, High Nickel alloy, etc. are selectively avail-able as the plate material.

YX-80 SeriesAdvantages1. Heat transfer co-efficiency is about 2 times as high as that

of multi-tube type. The condensing surface is always se-cured and the heat transfer co-efficient is improved be-cause condensed drain is immediately discharged to out-side.

2. To reduce more vapor pressure drop than the convention-al plate type, special consideration is taken in combina-tion of the vapor line plates and the cooling water lineplates.

3. Cooling water consumption equivalent to about half ofthat in conventional type.

4. The use of T.C.G gasket on the vapor and cooling mediaexpands the application to wide field.

5. Easy cleaning and inspection of plates.

6. Easy change of the condensing capacity by increasing orreducing the number of plates.

GX MULTI CAP PLATE

For Slurry Containing Liquids

GX-21 provide plates clearance of 10mm for both hot andcold sides, so that heat regeneration can be performed be-tween hot and cold slurry.

Mixed plate arrangement between GX-21 & GX-22 (calledGX-23), gives biggest plate clearance of 20 mm at one side,which is available for large size particle.

GX plate provides excellent performance for particle con-taining liquid, such as slurry (PVC, latex.), sludge (quench-ing oil, plating solution, crystal (sodium hypo-chlorite, so-dium alminate, etc.)

GX series plates have bigger forming depth. Larger corruga-tion pitch and less metal to metal contact points, comparingto conventional plates, which are keys of better performancefor slurry, sludge and crystal containing liquid.

Recently, NTU designed for HVAC application is becoming higher and higher. By adopting large temperature changebetween inlet and outlet, circulating flow rate can be reduced. The following shows the difference in required circulatingsecondary flow rate for the duty of 1000RT.

CleaningIf the exchanging performance deteriorates, the plate surface must be cleaned.The performance decrement can be just judged by checking the operating temperature and pressure drop.It is recommended to predetermine a proper cleaning interval according to actual operating condition.

Check the gasket surface and the gasket sealing line. If any foreign ma
