The supremacy of ideas .

The new PLATFORM family of aerial work platforms is yet an-

other demonstration of Merlo’s superb design and innovation.

It represents the next development stage of access platforms.

Conforming to the EN280 Standard, it combines the lifting per-

formance of a traditional self-propelled boom platform with the

rough terrain mobility of a telehandler and a travel speed more

akin to a truck-mounted platform.

Performance and safety are assured throughout very variable

operating conditions.

The heart of the system is a self-propelled chassis with hydro-

pneumatic suspension. Mounted upon it are a fully enclosed and

furnished operator’s cab and a two man work platform supported

by an articulated telescopic boom. The new series has three mo-

dels, with up to 30 metres working height and two man 225 kg.

This new concept completely eliminates both the loading and

unloading of traditional self-propelled platforms and the limited

off-highway performance of truck-mounted platforms, with con-

sequent savings of time and labour.

HIGH-TECH EXCELLENCE

Proportional controlsThe operator controls through proportional levers all the boom movements and the auxiliary services.

Side mounted engineThe use of a 4-cylinder engine provides reliability and provides more torque.

Hydropneumatic suspension A high technology choice which guarantees ride comfort and best operation when working on tyres.

High ground clearanceMerlo axles were designed and produced in-house specifically for a better rough-terrain capability.

Power where it could be needed The platform is provided with a 220V

electrical connection and either a water or air system with quick connector.

Versatility without equalThe attachment of the platform to the boom permits rapid transformation between transport and working modes.

Total protectionAll the operating components of the boom

assembly are placed totally within the boom, for maximum protection and reliability.

Auxiliary electrical pumpAn auxiliary electric pump provides emergency power to retrieve the platform.

A moving counterweight (not MPR20) automatically assures optimal stability in the most exacting of applications. The main structure of the machine is surrounded by the ‘Ring of Steel’ - a solid 70 mm diameter steel bar - which is a structural part of the chassis, and protects against site damage.

EXCLUSIVE FEATURES

High resistance tyresThe smoothness and comfort

of pneumatic tyres with the safety of a solid tyre.

Less wasted energyThe hydraulic circuit features a Load-

Sensing variable delivery piston pump.

Optimal stabilityA moving counterweight automatically

assures optimal stability in the most exacting of applications.

The fly-jib has autonomous elevation (90°) and the platform can slew 180° around the vertical axis.

The new Merlo mobile access platforms ensure maximum performance and safety levels in even the most demanding operating environments.

Safety without compromiseThe on-board safety system ensures an automatic and continuous as-sessment of machine stability in every operating condition, leaving the operator free to concentrate on other parts of the job.

Ergonomic controls and clear instrumentationAll the controls, both in the cab and in the basket, are easily reached and operate intuitively. The instrument panel affords an immediate and easy check of all the machine’s essential operating parameters.

Maximum versatilityThe construction is designed with clean lines and minimal obstructions to permit working within confined spaces.

Amazing manoeuvrabilityIntegrated design of all components leads to incomparable compact-ness. The ease of handling and precise positioning, together with a lively engine, give exceptional manoeuvrability.

Excellent service accessThe positioning of the engine, transmission and the hydraulic system make routine servicing very easy, with excellent access. Also, service engineers can work in safety from ground level.

The new cab, a new standard to beat• 995 mm internal width• Innovative et functional design • 360° visibility• Structure conforms to IS0 3449 (FOPS)• Ergonomic controls and intuitive motion• Window seals of slimmer profile to increase glass area• Manual air conditioner (optional)

Easy entryCab entry through the fully-opening door is facilitated by wide, self-cleaning steps and a flat, obstacle free floor.

The speed change is electrically controlled with switch conveniently located at the side of the steering wheel.

The Finger-Touch direction control lever allows the driver to select between forward and reverse without taking his hand from the steering wheel.

The joystick gives the operator full control of boom and upperstructure in one lever.

THE WINNING CONCEPT

Total safetyPLATFORM machines can operate in complete safety with the chassis up to 3° out of horizontal. The machine’s automatic stability control-ling mechanism blocks any further aggravating motion of the boom whenever the limit of stability is approached. The operator receives an audio and visual warning signal and is able only to return the platform to a safer state.

Telescopic boom It has a single articulated base, with telescopic segments.Advanced research into ever more efficient solutions has led to the development of a hydraulic extension system which simultaneously controls the movement of all boom sections. which slide on adjustable low-friction pads. All the components of the mechanism, the hydraulic piping and elec-tric lines are mounted within the boom assembly, to guarantee their best protection against damage. The articulated boom is a completely new concept. Telescopic seg-ments have a hexagonal section high yield steel structure ensuring increased rigidity and enhances performance.

Controls for hydropneumatic suspension have been regrouped into a wide lateral console.

Main 220 V electric switch. Water or air quick connector and 220V electrical connection.

Platform controls

The operator has a full set of ergonomic and proportional controls for driving and steering in the platform, with automatic control of maximum speed. An automatic system maintains constant speed of turret rotation and boom movement independent of boom extension. This ensures that starts and stops are smooth and progressive for better comfort and precision.

The engine is a 4-cylinder turbo Deutz unit. Liquid cooled, it develops 74.9 kW (102 HP) at 2400 rpm.

AT THE HEART OF POWER

Self-propelledPLATFORM machines are able to drive upon the roads with complete autonomy at up to 40 kph (where national regulations permit), driven from a fully furnished operator’s cab. Once upon a worksite, control is transferred to the basket at up to 6 kph with the boom stowed and 1 kph with it raised at up to full working height.

Full-time four wheel driveAll four wheels are permanently driven. The rear axle has a differential lock to ensure best traction on poor ground.

The latest high-tech hydrostatic transmissionThis system has many advantages and a broad possibility of control at high power levels. An infinite speed adjustment is available simply through the accelerator pedal, rather than using the gears of a conventional transmission, freeing the driver to concentrate on the job.The forward/reverse lever can be easily operated without taking a hand from the steering wheel (the Finger-Touch system) and speed control is achieved purely with the accelerator.

Braking systemThe hydraulic service brakes are 4 large diameter dry discs with floating callipers, operated with servo assistance, mounted internally on the output shafts of each differential. Dual hydraulic circuits are provided for additional safety. The independent disc parking brake is fitted to the main transmission drive shaft. A ‘fail-safe’ design, it is automatically operated when the engine stops. The operator is also able to apply the brake whenever required.

Three steering modesThe four drive wheels are steered with hydraulically assistance. Three steering modes are available, with automatic resynchronisation should the wheels become unsynchronised. The adoption of low maintenance spherical bearings assures maximum reliability. Controls are available both in the cab and in the aerial platform.1 Front wheel steer (for road use - cab only control).2 Four wheel steer (provides minimum steer radius).3 Crab steer (provides sideways motion whilst retaining the longitudi-

nal alignment of the machine).

The axial piston pump with Load-Sensing control ensures a rapid response to all operator requirements.

Load-Sensing hydraulic systemThis device acts to vary the hydraulic oil flow delivery automatically adapting it to the needs of the hydraulic service elements being used. The delivery is always equal to that requested by the joystick stroke so that power dissipation is reduced to a minimum. Making it highly cost effective in terms of reduced consumption rates and greater component duration. The working pressure is 210 bar.

Hydro-pneumatic suspension - Automatic frame levellingAn automatic chassis levelling system is built into the hydropneumatic suspension, assuring stability on laterally or longitudinally inclined surfaces. The system assures maximum comfort for the driver by eliminating pitching when travelling at maximum speed.

Three modes of operation provide for a wide range of applications:

• In ‘automatic’ mode the intelligent reaction of this unique suspension to ground conditions is ideal for low speed travel over rough terrain and for high speed travel on the roads.

• ‘Manual’ mode permits the driver to vary the setting of the suspen-sion units to level the machine on uneven ground. Correction of up to 9° (16%) laterally and 5° (9%) longitudinally is available.

• For operating on-tyres, the suspension can be ‘blocked’, locking the suspension units and providing the best stability.
