Monitoring Capabilities in XI 3..
Monitor deployment using Probes Probes provide the ability to monitor BusinessObjects system using simulated application
workflows which are run through SDK-based scripts Provided in a Monitoring Add-on package available for download from the Business Objects
Labs
Monitor using system and application tools Using BusinessObjects Enterprise Metrics - can check server availability and other metrics
using the Central Management Console(CMC) Using Web Application server & Database metrics Using System Level components and Metrics like Windows Task Manager
Monitor using third party management solutions like IBM Tivoli

BI 4.0 Monitoring Features
Monitoring is a brand new application in SBO BI 4.0 in Central Management Console(CMC) & is shipped with the platform
Provides Dashboard showing Birds view of SBOE deployment
Status of servers, alerts and KPIs
Uses the metrics exposed by different servers
Maintains history and provide graphical visualization component
Provides threshold notifications
Default watches for all the servers
Integration with SAP Solution Manager through Introscope & IBM Tivoli
View the recent failures on the dashboard screen.
Check system availability and response time
Analyze peak load and peak period for the CMS

Main pillars of Monitoring
Metric - a system of related measure that facilitates the quantification of someparticular characteristic
Probe - utility to check availability of SBOE services by simulating workflows
Watch - is an abstraction of a part of the BI Landscape, provide real-time statusand historical trends of servers and workflows within the SAP BusinessObjectsEnterprise environment.
Alert - is a notification generated by the monitoring application, when a user-defined threshold value set for different metrics applied to a watch is breached.

Monitoring Terms
KPIs - KPIs (key performance indicators) are standard metrics in the SAP BusinessObjects Enterprisedeployment. They provide information about the schedules and log on sessions. For example, a highernumber of RunningJobs indicates good performance of the servers. Alternatively, a higher number ofPendingJobs indicates poor performance and high system load
Dashboard - The Dashboard page provides a centralized view for the system administrator to monitorthe performance of all servers. It provides real-time information on the system KPIs, recent alerts, watches, and corresponding graphs based on the watch state
Health State terminology - The list below highlights the values and corresponding health state:
"0" - "DANGER"
"1" - "AMBER"
"2" - "GREEN"
Derived Metrics - Derived metric gives you the flexibility to create metrics based on the user'srequirements, and then create a watch using this metric. You can create a derived metric by combiningtwo or more existing metrics in a mathematical equation
Topological Metrics - Topological metrics provides you the net state for each service category inBusiness Intelligence Platform. For example, the Crystal Report service gives you the combined healthstate of all the watches related to Crystal servers

Monitoring TermsMetrics
Each server exposes its own metricsSystem level metrics
CPU, threads, memoryApplication level metrics
number of sessions, completed jobsDerived MetricMetrics can be consumed by
other clients via JMXComputed within SBOE by watches
real time graphical view of any metricsearch / filter from toolbox

Monitoring TermsProbes
Monitor different services and simulates the different functionalities of BusinessObjects BI.Health ProbesDiagnostic ProbesCan be scheduled or run on demandThere are 9 default probes.New probes can be created using Probe SDK
Implementation class and a new probe InfoObject (CLI,SDK,DFO)
Typically a Probe returns a Boolean result and a roundtrip time, which can be monitored using a watchIntegrated in CMC and accessed from Monitoring Tool

High Level Architecture (Contd.)
The high-level components in the architecture are listed below:The Platform Java Server (PJS)The Java Management Extensions (JMX) agent/serverMBeansJMX ClientsThe Management consolesTrending Database
The monitoring service is hosted on the Platform Java Server. The application is based on JMX technology. The Monitoring Platform Java Service provides the core services available in the monitoring application.
The Monitoring Platform Java Service provides the following services:Provides the JMX agent service.Creates MBeans dynamically for the SAP BusinessObjects serversProvides lifecycle management for the MbeansProvides a mechanism for registering new probesAllows users to create complex threshold conditions using the metrics of the serversProvides a threshold notification mechanism and sends alertsProvides a trending function by storing historical data.

High Level Architecture (Contd.)
The Probe Scheduling Service that is hosted on the Adaptive Job Server manages the running andscheduling of probes. Hence, the Adaptive Job Server should be running for the probes to run. Themonitoring application also exposes a JMX or Remote Method Invocation (RMI) URL end point. Otherenterprise applications such as SAP Solution Manager and IBM Tivoli Monitoring can connect to themonitoring application and access the SAP BusinessObjects metrics by using a JMX Remote API. Themonitoring application uses a dedicated Derby database for storing historical data for the purpose oftrending

Auditing DB as Monitoring DB
In SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.0, the Monitoring application was packaged withan embedded database (Derby DB), and all the Monitoring information was available in this database. InSAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform 4.0 FP3, users can now also utilize the Audit DB,which is the database where CMS stores the auditing data, for storing monitoring information.Note: At present, Monitoring does not support the 'SAP HANA Database'. Monitoring supports all otherdatabases supported by CMS Auditing
