Geographical location, including climate: The play takes place in Verona. The city is located in northern Italy. The climate is humid throughout the year. The season the play takes place in is summer. Summers in Verona are hot. Mantua is another location used briefly in the play. It is a town in Lombardy. It is just southwest of Verona. The significance of the play’s season and geographical location are that they match the play’s theme of passion. Passion brings up sensory images of fire and heat. 3.Economic environment: The Montagues and Capulets are well off. Their wealth gave

them a position of influence within the land. It is possible that they were feudal style powers. Meaning that they moved from rural to urban as the economy shifted, having to also content with the shift of influence from agriculture to commerce. Guilds drove the economics at the time. 4. Political environment was slightly unstable at points. This partially had to do with all

the corruption within the church. This was echoed throughout Europe. The Lords had influence in politics due to their wealth, but they did not hold a political position of power. The Prince acted as the governor of the city. Based on the script it is clear that their was disunity within Verona. The peasants wanted their Lords to be removed from their place of influence.

5. Social environment was heavily influenced by the Renaissance, although this is not heavily reflected in the play itself. There were a flow of artists coming into Italy. The social environment within the play was tense due to the conflict at the time between the Montagues and the Capulets. 6. Religious environment is Catholic. This explains the friar in the church who acted as a

confessor and sought to bring faith to the people; hence why the Friar Laurence felt the need to bring unity between the Montagues and Capulets. A higher ranking church figure had more power but his responsibility was not chiefly the well being of the people. The pope at the time was Pope Clement VIII. B. Previous Action: At the opening of the play it is discovered that the Montagues and the

Capulets have been fighting for multiple generations for reasons that no one is aware. Fighting between the two households has been an issue several times already. Romeo is in love with Rosalind. Paris has been trying to get Lord Capulet to give him Juliet’s hand. The nurse has been with Juliet since her birth. C. Polar Attitudes:

II. Dialogue A. Choice of words - Shakespeare uses an astrological motif in Romeo and Juliet. Words like “star-crossed,” “moon,” and “sun,” are continuously used as metaphors and similes throughout the play. He uses many phallic symbols, as he does in all of his plays. Romeo and Juliet use religious metaphors when speaking.

B. Choice of phrases - The phrases match Shakespearean language as many of them are in iambic pentameter. The many astrological phrases and metaphors used contribute to the theme of fate.

C. Choice of images - The image created is one of fate or destiny. The image of passion is

also created by the themes and motifs of the play. The extreme diction used within phrases points to the extreme love and extreme hate the characters have for one another. D. Choice of peculiar characteristics (dialect) - The servants are more crude, which helps to separate them at a class level. The friar is much more conservative in his speech than are the Nurse and Mercutio. Romeo and Juliet speak much more romantically then the other characters.

E. The sound of the dialogue - The sound of the dialogue is romantic. It fits with the romance of the plot. It is elegant and intriguing. F. Structure of the dialogue - Shakespeare uses his signature iambic pentameter for most of the play.III. Dramatic Action

Nurse - The nurse is blunt and unafraid of being disrespectful. She is out of line in what she says frequently due to her feisty nature. Mercutio - Mercutio is crude and blunt. Initial character-mood-intensity at the scene opening expressed as:

1. Heartbeat: rate Romeo - Romeo’s heart rate is slow at the beginning of the play. His heart is heavy and he is melancholy. When he meets Juliet his heart rate goes back to a

normal rate. Fights and stressful circumstances cause his heart to race. He tries

to stay calm on the outside, while on the inside he is in panic. After he kills Tybalt his internal and external tempos become very fast paced. Juliet - Juliet’s heart rate is slow until she meets Romeo. After that, her heart is either beating fast because of him, or because of the pressures of the crisis in which she finds herself. The conflict with her father over her marriage to Paris

and her scheme with Friar Laurence to fake her death are also cause for her heart to race. Nurse - The nurse has such high energy, that it takes very extreme situations to get her heart racing. Long journeys, fights with people, and Juliet’s death are examples of things it takes to make her heart race. Her normal fast external pace

has caused her internal pace to slow down over time. Mercutio - Slower, it takes a lot to get his heart racing. His fast external rate has made his internal slower over time. When he is giving long speeches and fighting, his heart rate is fast. 2. Perspiration: heavy, light, where, etc.

Romeo - Romeo mainly sweats under his armpits and his forehead. It is light most of the time, but very heavy once he kills Tybalt. Since the stakes have been raised he is under much more pressure. Juliet - Juliet only sweats after she meets Romeo. Before that she really had no reason to unless she were running. When she sweats it is her forehead and

armpits and is a result of the stressful circumstances surrounding her secret marriage and her husband’s banishment. Nurse - When the Nurse sweats, she sweats everywhere. She is getting older, therefore it takes a lot of work for her to chase after Juliet. Her nerves that come into play when she starts assisting Juliet cause her to sweat frequently for reasons

other then physical fatigue. Mercutio - Mercutio is often out of breath from energetic monologues. He sweats everywhere physically possible when he sweats. His legs and arms may just get very warm, but everywhere else he sweats. 3. Stomach condition

Romeo - Romeo’s stomach is in knots when the play begins. He is a love-sick puppy. After he sees Juliet he has butterflies at even the thought of her. Once he finds out she is a Capulet, he still has butterflies, but they are combined with a bit

of stomach tension at the prospect of the situation. This is relieved once more

after she declares her love for him. His stomach condition changes again after Mercutio dies and he kills Tybalt. After that he becomes nauseous because of what has happened. There is a lack of appetite throughout the play for him. Juliet - Juliet’s stomach is normal until she meets Romeo. Then she has butterflies. Her stomach condition does not change until she finds out about

Tybalt’s death and Romeo’s banishment. Then there is nervous tension in her stomach. She also experiences a lack of hunger with this news. Nurse - The nurse is always hungry. She does not experience any unusual stomach pains until she is assisting Juliet. Suddenly she is much more nervous. She feels sick and empty when Juliet “dies.”

Mercutio - Mercutio may try to have as many adrenaline rushes as he can, but rarely does his stomach have nervous tension. His death may be the first time that his stomach gets tight. 4. Muscle tension Romeo - Any muscle tension that Romeo would have at the beginning of the play

would be from slouching as he moped. As conflicts grow his center becomes his head as he tries to figure out what to do. When this happens he has muscle tension in his back and neck. He has muscle tension throughout his whole body when he fights. Juliet - The first time Juliet has muscle tension is when she is waiting for the

Nurse’s report from Romeo. She does not have muscle tension again until she finds out that Romeo is banished. Then she carries it in her shoulders and neck. Her center seems to shift from her heart to her head. Her muscle tension comes when her head is her center. Nurse - The Nurse’s muscle tension comes from her age. She mentions her stiff

joints. Stiff back, stiff legs and shoulders seems to be the source of her tension. There is muscle tension in her shoulders when she discovers Juliet is dead. Mercutio - When he is angry he holds the tension in his lower back. He is so care free that usually he does not have muscle tension. However, he does get worked up at times. When this occurs he hold his shoulders back and head tall to assert

himself and be strong. 5. Breathing: rate, depth

Romeo - Romeo’s breathing is slow and heavy initially as he is having a pity

party. When he is with Juliet his breath is light. He breaths deep and heavy when fighting. Juliet - Normal except when she is conflicted then she has short, fast breaths. Nurse - Always breaths heavy whether indicative of internal tempo or not. Mercutio - Heart is always ready to race but is often calm. He tries to work i up.

V. Idea A. Meaning of the title: Shakespeare named his tragedies after the tragic hero, and in this case heroine also. He could have used something very creative and romantic such as “Two Star-crossed Lovers,” however he did not. Using the names of the characters reminds people of their humanness. It acknowledges the romantic elements without

ignoring the tragedy of the circumstances. The “and” suggests the union of the two as one in life and in death. Romeo’s name being listed first correlates with the fact that he killed himself first. B. Romeo and Juliet is a play about passion. The extreme love and extreme hate that the characters feel for one another is what reminds readers and audience members of their

humanness. That is what makes these character relatable. People tend to be most impulsive when they are most passionate. However, acting on this can have consequences. 1. “A glooming peace this morning with it brings, The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head. Go hence to have more talk of these sad things: Some shall be pardoned, and some punishéd, For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”

2. “From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life, Whose misadventured piteous overthrows; Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.” 3. “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet,”

4. “I am afeard, Being in night, all this is but a dream, Too flattering-sweet to be substantial.” 5. “Wisely and slow: they stumble that run fast.” 6. “These violent delights have violent ends, And in their triumph die, like fire and powderWhich as they kiss consume.”
