“Man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at play.” - Heraclitus of Ephesus (about 535 – 475 BC)
PLAY, an exhibition of sculpture, photography, film and performance, will take place at the NIROX Sculpture Park in the Cradle during October, November and December. The exhibition explores the notion of play as an art form. The aspiration is to present an exhibition that investigates the frivolity of play in conjunction with the reception of the mediums on exhibition, and distract viewers from the formalities and seriousness so often felt when considering art. By taking the exhibition outdoors, PLAY implores viewers to interact, touch and play with the artworks and to reinterpret the notion of play within a contemporary setting.
The sculptures presented in PLAY push the boundaries between the artwork and the viewer, where the viewer is invited to participate in a form of play and engagement with the work. The work thus gains meaning through the viewer’s participation and reception. Similarly, the performance presented during events throughout the exhibition requires the participation of the viewer. The act of interpreting the intended sense, or meaning, while at the same time interacting with the work on an informal level, situates the exhibition within the sphere of disambiguation, where the viewer finds it clear that participation is required in order to understand, experience and appreciate the various works on exhibition.
Installed within the context of the Nirox Sculpture Park situated within The Cradle of Humankind, a sense of roots, memory and looking back is invoked. Viewers and artists explore feelings of nostalgia often associated with childhood memories and the promise of the outdoors, recreation, freedom and amusement. PLAY appeals to the viewer to reconsider older cultural catego-ries of gameplay, to become a protagonist in the strategy of re-interpretation.
