Why do you use a golf glove? To control the club? To absorb sweat? Sure, these are

reasons most golfers cite for wearing a glove. But have you thought of a glove as more than

a piece of material? Have you thought of it as game-improvement equipment?

Bionic Classic has 12 anatomical pads for a lighter grip and greater control. Made of high-grade cabretta leather with Lycra motion zones.

Bionic Pro is made of ultra-thin, ultra-premium leather available in limited supplies for the player who wants a super-tight, surgical fit. USGA conforming.

Bionic Women’s Classic is designed specifically to meet the unique shape and characteristics of a woman’s hand. Also made of high-grade cabretta leather with Lycra motion zones.

TECHNOLOGY “No one’s really explored glove technology until now. And I think Bionic has done something so cutting-edge… Now, for the first time ever a golf glove is actually going to be a piece of equipment.” DISTANCE “In my 27 years on tour, I’ve worked with numerous instructors, and every one of them wanted me to hold the club lighter so my arms can be relaxed and so that I can create more speed. Bionic glove actually allows that to happen because more of your hand, or more of the glove, is actually on the surface of the grip.”

ACCURACY “They’ve also created a product that reduces hand fatigue and reduces the amount of torque that you feel in your hands.”

MOISTURE CONTROL “Most of you wear a glove because of the sweat factor… Sweat is what kills your glove… They’ve addressed the issue by putting little terry cloth pads in where you sweat the most… This glove will last longer than any glove you’ve used in your life.”

THE BEST “I’m real proud to wear this glove. There’s no question in my mind that this is the best golf glove ever made.”

Hear what Paul has to say. Go to Youtube.com and search: Azinger Bionic.

Paul Azinger, 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup Team Captain, uses Bionic gloves.

Finally a golf glove that can improve your game

Bionic® promotes lighter grip for longer, more accurate shots.

Designed by a hand surgeon: The hand is the most complicated part of the human anatomy. And it’s the only part of the body that comes in contact with the golf club. This is why Bionic is the only golf glove designed by an orthopedic hand surgeon.

Anatomical pad system:(Orange-yellow highlights.) The pads in the glove fill the valleys in the fingers, palm and thumb. This creates more surface contact on the club. More surface contact means a more relaxed grip for greater clubhead speed, and less twisting of the club at impact for greater accuracy.

Unmatched durability: Golfers who use Bionic say it lasts 2 to 3 times longer than a traditional leather glove. Sweat shortens the life of a glove. Bionic mops up sweat with terry cloths strategically placed on the inside of the glove. Plus, stretchable Lycra zones across the knuckles and between the fingers act as windows for ventilation. Bionic is made of washable, high-grade cabretta leather.

ROYAL LAKES AT LAKEWOOD RANCH GOLF & COUNTRY

LAKEWOOD RANCH GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB INTRODUCES ROYAL LAKES by Mark Bruce, PGA ProfessionalPlay Golf Sarasota – Editor in Chief

Royal Lakes at Country Club East is an 18-hole championship course designed by Rick Robbins in a modified links style. This golf course is located east of Lorraine Road and adjacent to The Ritz-Carlton Members Club and the Lake Club, which is where you will find some of the largest and most beautiful homes in southwest Florida.

Royal Lakes is the third of three private courses at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. The long term plan for Country Club East is to build another clubhouse along with a fourth golf course and a state-of-the-art learning center with practice holes and a practice facility. Other than the links style design, features that make Royal Lakes a unique and fun golf course are the incredible condition of the greens, fairways and tees. Also, every hole can be played as a par 3, called the short course, and is a great place to learn the game at any age. At 1,898 yards, it is fun to play the course as a par 3 with young children or beginners. It has become a tradition to play our “Masters Par 3” event there every April when they are playing in Augusta on the Wednesday before the tournament.

The golf course is very long from the Champion tees at 7,339 and very manageable with few forced carries from the Forward tees at 5,260 which are rated for both men and women. Other unique features are 2 large double greens averaging over 25,000 square feet. The par 3 seventh hole and par 5 second hole share a large green and the ninth and eighteenth holes finish on a very large green that wrap around one of the largest lakes on property to finish below the site of the future clubhouse. Like many of the famous old courses, there is a lot of sand but no formal bunkers. All the sand is played as “through the green.” The variety of native grasses and wildflowers along with the many large lakes and wetlands that surround the course make it great for both golf and home sites. In general, the 3 courses offer a great golf experience for all levels of golfers with outstanding service and playing conditions.

Families are an important part of the programming at the Club. Activities like the Easter Egg Hunt, Father-Daughter Dance, Outdoor Movie Night and Family Fun Night Bingo are just a few of the many events that offer entertainment and relaxation for all members of the family. Top quality child care is available during most events. Adults enjoy Learn to Dance lessons, Wine Tastings, Trivia Challenges, themed parties and much more.

As new residents move into Country Club East, new facilities will be added. There are plans for a resort pool with lazy river and tower slide, tennis courts, children’s play area, fitness center and day spa, and a more casual clubhouse than the Country Club clubhouse, giving members more options for dining experiences.

Award-winning Lakewood Ranch is a master-planned community encompassing all aspects of a vibrant community. The seven residential villages at Lakewood Ranch feature pristine landscaping and panoramic views of the interconnected lakes. The preserved wetlands and woodlands weave throughout the neighborhoods to present nature at its very best. If the golf course lifestyle is your dream, The Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club can make those dreams come true. Here, there are endless opportunities to truly enjoy the nature of Florida Golf living.

Just outside the gates of the two country club neighborhoods are the kind of amenities that make Lakewood Ranch such a desirable place to live and work: you never have to go far to play! From polo to parks to world-class dining, to amazing shopping, they’re all within minutes of your front door.

On the final hole of the 1969 Ryder Cup Match at Royal Birkdale in England, Jack Nicklaus stunned the golf world by conceding a two-foot putt to Tony Jacklin, for the first of only two ties in Ryder Cup history. Today,

that gesture is considered one of the finest acts of sportsmanship in golf history and has inspired one of the greatest golf clubs in the country, The Concession Golf Club.

Located on Florida's Gulf Coast, The Concession's 18 hole course sits amid ancient oak hammocks and is steeped in tradition, rules, etiquette, and honor. This extraordinary private course, designed by Jack Nicklaus in association with Tony Jacklin, is a worthy complement to that unforgettable moment in great golf history.

The Concession Golf Club offers gracious Club facilities, including Bistro at The Concession by world-renowned and Zagat-acclaimed restaurateur Sean Murphy. Club Members receive world-class service while

being surrounded by Florida's lush natural settings.

Local Golf Professionals just keep on giving……

For years, local area PGA professionals have given back to local charities and youth sports organizations. Not only have local professionals shared their time, expertise, energy, and effort to reach out to kids about the game of golf, but they have also put their money where their mouth is, donating over $140,000 in the past 7 years to several local charities and youth programs. Primarily these funds have been raised at the Club level by professionals participating in a local Birdie-A-Thon, Golf’s version of a telethon, where professionals solicit sponsorship from members, customers, friends and family for each birdie they make in a round of golf or maybe even a day-long golf marathon. The Birdie-A-Thon program has been successful and the Chapter intends to continue it for years to come.

Recently two area PGA Professionals and SWC-PGA Members, Mark Bruce and Tony Panico, developed another way for the local chapter to reach out to kids playing other sports such as soccer, baseball, basketball, and football. “As PGA Professionals, we are always trying to build bridges for people, seeking to engage them in the game of golf”, says Mark Bruce, co-founder of The PAR 5 Club, a new lifestyle and entertainment membership program that promotes local golf in conjunction with restaurants, area professional services, personal services, and entertainment. Annual membership in the program is only $55.00 and members get online access to special promotions and savings being offered by the vast array of businesses involved, golf and otherwise. The PAR 5 Club also has a fund-raising component to it that allows local sports and philanthropic organizations to keep a healthy portion (30%) of the proceeds collected in a well coordinated PAR 5 Club “membership sales” campaign. “Working with kids that play other sports or who have never played golf is the perfect fit”, says Panico, “If we, as PGA Professionals can give these kids a vehicle to raise the necessary funds for their current sporting interests, the odds are good that down the road they will connect the dots, realizing that golf and local PGA pros helped their cause”.

“We know that each year Junior Golf programs will bring kids to golf”, says Bruce. “Just as important are the kids that are willing to give golf a try when their baseball, basketball, soccer and football season or career comes to an end”. For Bruce, the idea of, “letting kids know we are here”, was born out of personal experience. “I played soccer back in Ohio for six solid years. Select Soccer, Travel Team Soccer, Indoor Soccer, you name it, I played it. Soccer burnout started to set in, so during summer break in 1984 I felt the urge to try another sport. It was golf. “My dad is a golfer, and played regularly back then. I loved to drive the cart more than anything and would tag-a-long with only that on my mind. The PGA Golf Pro would always welcome me to the course and seemed eager to give me bits of info about the swing when he saw a chance. In short, he knew how to peak my interest. Since that summer I have never stopped playing golf and today I view the PAR 5 Club as a way to give back.”

Membership in The PAR 5 Club gives consumers the opportunity to save money at area restaurants, golf courses, auto mechanics, car washes, and many other personal and professional services people use in everyday life. The program is all based online at www.PAR5Club.com and allows members to click and print special savings offers all year long. Panico says, “The PAR 5 Club is an all purpose vehicle. It saves consumers money on things they normally do. It gives youth sporting or charitable programs an opportunity to raise money and give their patrons lasting value, and it marries golf with all the supporting restaurants and businesses involved”.

IMG Academies and the National High School Coaches Association presents “High School National Championships”

Bradenton, Fl. (Jan. 14, 2010) – IMG Academies and the National High School Coaches Association has signed a deal that will help dispel the annual debate of which state produces the nation’s best athletic teams and players by creating official High School National Championships. Tournament style team championships for 7-on-7 football and lacrosse, boys’ and girls’ team tennis and golf will begin at the Bradenton based Academy in the summer 2010, with plans for possible national television coverage and expansion to national championships for 20 sports in the upcoming years.

“Our parent company, IMG Worldwide, has a long history of producing athletic events and has represented an innovative force in developing college sports,” said Sam Zussman, Managing Director of IMG Academies and Senior Vice President of IMG Worldwide. “Similarly, together with the NHSCA, we are committed to developing the type and level of national championships that high school athletes deserve. At IMG Academies, we have been helping develop high school athletes for more than 30 years and have the facilities and knowledge to make these events highly successful.”

Currently, the NHSCA hold championships for 7-on-7 football, weightlifting and wrestling. The NHSCA plans to organize national championships for baseball, basketball, cross country, hockey, soccer, track and field, and other sports in upcoming years.

About the National High School Coaches AssociationFounded in 1989, the NHSCA is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 service organization providing support and leadership

SPOTLIGHT EVENT

JACK NICKLAUS VISITS THE CONCESSION GOLF CLUB by Mark Bruce, PGA ProfessionalPlay Golf Sarasota – Editor in Chief

When Jack Nicklaus visited The Concession Golf Club on March 31, he humored the crowd of media and members with lighthearted jokes, mostly directed at himself – he quipped a time or two about growing older – and explained the purpose of his visit, which was to take a fresh look at the course to see what could be done to make an extraordinary course even better.

“It’s a little like building your dream house,” noted Bruce Cassidy, owner of The Concession Golf Club. “Although it is great, there are always a few things you want to change once you start living there to make it even better.”

Nicklaus agreed. “I think that you can make anything good better, and that’s what we’d like to do,” he said. “We want the golf course to be playable for the people who want to play it. Not everyone is a single digit handicap.”

When Nicklaus arrived, he played 18 holes with Tony Jacklin, Bruce Cassidy, Chris Cochran (Jack’s lead course designer at The Concession), and Superintendent Terry Kennelly. Nicklaus and Jacklin took a close look at each hole to determine potential improvements. Nicklaus later recapped those changes during a press conference for members and media. Most of the proposed changes consisted of adding a few new tees, expanding tee shot landing areas, and slightly modifying the greens to make them more player-friendly.

Nicklaus clarified to the crowd at the press conference that it is not his intention to make the course easy, but simply to make it more forgiving. “I didn’t find the golf course all that difficult,” noted Nicklaus in a subsequent interview, “but also, you know, not everyone’s gonna play like I do I guess.”

When asked if he was nervous to play with Nicklaus, Mr. Cassidy responded, “Surprisingly I was not nervous, because playing with Jack was like playing with any of the members. He was just one of the guys. A lot of joking and laughter took place while taking a serious look at each hole. It was a very special day for me to play with Jack and Tony – two of the all-time greats of the sport.”

During the late afternoon press conference, Nicklaus opened up the floor for questions and graciously posed for pictures with members. Members and media then stayed for a social hour in honor of the day.

Near the close of the day, Nicklaus reminded the crowd of his commitment to The Concession. “I feel that I’m connected here by the hip, and I want to stay that way. I want to make sure at this golf course that if they ever have a problem, all they have to do is let us know, and we will be here.”

64 PlayGolfSarasota.com

Bill is an affluent diner and loves to write about his dining experiences. He is retired and is a member at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton. He lives with his lovely wife, Rebecca, in Sarasota and Boca Grande. Mr. Tompkins independently rated these fifty (50) area restaurants.

“Sarasota is, in my opinion, a uniquely delightful and charming city. Per capita, it probably offers more quality-of-life features than any other place in the U.S. In addition to its awesome beauty, pristine beaches and bays and great weather, its other endearing aspects include several outstanding golf courses, nine live theatres, a superb art museum, a very good symphony orchestra, a world-class opera and the fifty fine restaurants listed in this review”.

“This review is based upon my own dining experiences as well as input from my wife and several of our food-savvy friends. I made every effort to be complete unbiased and honest. Of course, any restaurant review is necessarily somewhat subjective. Several aspects of a dining experience are matters of taste, opinion and a comparison (to other restaurants) data base. While I hope this review will be helpful to all in selecting future restaurants, there undoubtedly will be some disagreement.” - Bill Tompkins

Rating Formula: In an attempt to be as objective as possible, points were assigned to each restaurant in four categories.

1. Consistent food quality. Finest fresh ingredients that were properly cooked (or prepared), seasoned and presented. Each restaurant rated on a 12-scale, with a 12 being truly excellent, 5, 6, or 7 being moderate or average (or good, but inconsistent) and a 1 or 2 for poor.

2. Pricing. Each rated on a scale on an 8-scale, with an 8 being very inexpensive, 4 or 5 being moderately priced, and a 1 for being overpriced.

3. Service and Ambience. Each rated on an 8-scale with a maximum of a 4 for service and the same for ambience. High ratings resulted from service that was friendly, responsive, prompt, accurate, unpretentious, and appropriate

This applies not only to the server, but to all restaurant personnel encountered, including the person who answers the phone. Ambience ratings were based upon the attractiveness of the décor, furnishings, art, view, setting & design, the quality of the silverware, glassware, and cloth napkins and tablecloth, the lack of noise, the absence of commercial products on table and an overall warm, inviting atmosphere. Fresh flowers always is a nice touch also…

4. Wine List and Bar. Each rated on a 6-scale with a maximum 4 for the wine selection and a 2 for the bar. Highest wine rating resulted from a large and diversified selection of domestic and imported fine wines, plus a knowledgeable person available to offer recommendations when requested. Top bar ratings resulted from full, well stocked bars with skilled and knowledgeable bartenders.

Although the combined maximum point total for all categories is a 34, such a rating would be impossible. No restaurant could stay in business if it achieved very high scores in categories A, C, & D unless it had a rather low score in category B. Practically, the highest possible rating would probably be a 30, but 29’s and 30’s should be an extreme rarity. For considering overall value, I suggest that the restaurant ratings be viewed as follows:

• 26 & higher Excellent • 23 – 25 Very Good• 20 – 22 Good • 17 – 19 Above average

SARASOTA’S

B E S T RESTAURANTS

2 0 1 0by Bill Tompkins

Page 67: Play Golf Sarasota.com July 2010 Issue

All restaurants ranked in the top five received superb food quality ratings. All ranked in the top dozen rated superior on service and very good on wine selection. The highest ambience ratings went to Euphemia Haye, Bijou Café (especially in the bar), Fleming’s, Hyde Park, Ruth’s Chris, Pattigeorge’s, Polo Grill, Colony, Chart House and Verona.

This review excludes restaurants located in Anna Marie Island, Siesta Key, Osprey, Venice, and all of Charlotte County. The only parts of Manatee County included are Lakewood Ranch and the northern half of Longboat Key. Private Country Clubs were also excluded. Were it not for these exclusions, there would have been a 3-way tie for number one. Each of Sean Murphy’s splendid creations, The Beach Bistro and The Bistro at The Concession Club, would have received a 28 rating.

Certain specialty restaurants were not rated but worthy of mention. The saloon food at The Sports Page, Evie’s Pizzeria & Tavern and Patrick’s Sports Bar is terrific. The delicious, honest food at Sarasota’s Amish places enhances Sarasota’s overall food culture. For example, Yoders serves the best southern breakfast in town as well as the best homemade pies.

REAL ESTATE PERSPECTIVES

Lakewood Ranch and Country Club East – “No sign of slowing down”

It seems like only a few years ago that the option of traveling east off I-75 on University Blvd. did not exist. As we all know, time does fly, and it has been more than a few years ago that Lakewood Ranch launched its’ unbelievable Master-Planned Community. In short order it has become a whole new city. “The Ranch” continues to expand with new residential offerings and a recent visit to the new Country Club East development, located off of Lorraine Rd. definitely tells me that new construction housing sales are on the rise inside the gates of Country Club East.

The Country Club and Country Club East (CCE) are gated residential villages, offering a variety of lifestyles with Single-family homes ranging from full-maintenance condos to detached villas with maintenance-included lawn service to grand scale estate residences. CCE will feature about 904 units developed around 18 holes of golf. Future expansion and a second golf course are also planned for the future. All lots in CCE will include a Bronze membership that includes dining and pool privileges in Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club. Residents of CCE will have access to several community pools, one open now in the Hazeltine neighborhood, and another beach style resort pool with beach tennis and an indoor recreation space are planned to open in 2011. A nice park just outside the gates and next to Willis Elementary is also planned.

Homes in the Country Club village enjoy dramatic landscapes, preserves and hundreds of species of native wildlife built around the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, with 3 private 18-hole championship courses, Cypress Links, King’s Dunes and now Royal Lakes. The original 2 courses located at the clubhouse in The Country Club Village were designed by Arnold Palmer and are recognized by Audubon International for their environmentally-friendly practices. Royal Lakes at Country Club East is an 18-hole championship course designed by Rick Robbins in a modified links style.

As a part of the official “Green” designation of Lakewood Ranch, all homes will be built to Florida Green Building Coalition standards. This means they will meet rigorous specifications for energy efficiency, clean indoor air, sustainability and drought-tolerant landscaping. Reservations are now accepted for homes and home sites.

It should be mentioned that you don’t have to live here to play here! Membership at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club is open to non-residents. A 60-day “Get Acquainted” Membership is an ideal way to see if this is the right fit for you and your family. Plus, an executive membership in the Platinum and Gold categories includes deposit payment plans and reduced dues for those under age 45.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Continued from page 77

These are all fairly simple things a golfer might concentrate on to hit the

golf shot they want. While not complicated swing thoughts, there is one very

complicated characteristic they have in common. The feet. Consider that the

structure of the foot and ankle involves 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than a

hundred muscles, tendons and ligaments.

There aren’t many adjustments a golfer makes with these anatomical

masterpieces, and as demonstrated above, none are all that drastic either.

However, the health of your feet can have a significant effect on your ability

to play the game. Dr. Amy Palladino operates A.L.P. Chiropractic & Orthotic

Center in Sarasota and says 50% - 70% of her patients are golfers, and those

that come to her with foot injuries see a direct correlation to their scoring.

“The majority of the golfers that I see have found that a good foundation has contributed to good scoring,” Palladino said.

“Without a good solid foundation every muscle in the body has to work that much harder to accomplish a specific movement

such as a powerful and controlled weight shift in the golf swing.”

When you consider the astounding amount of stress that feet endure on a daily basis, it’s not hard to understand why

golfers and non-golfers alike end up with a weakened base. With every step, you put three to five times your body weight

on your foot and when running, it’s five to ten times. Not only that, but as Mackenzie Jones, co-owner of Fleet Feet Sports

in Sarasota explained, the human foot was designed to traverse three dimensional surfaces and therefore have three points

of contact. Jones expanded saying, “The natural terrain they walked and trees or hills they climbed provided early humans’

feet a fourth point of contact, but today, walking or running on flat streets and sidewalks is like putting hundreds of pounds

on a three legged table.”

What’s more, foot discomfort and injury can have a detrimental effect on the entire body. “The majority of the time

people don’t connect that their back problem could have something to do with their feet,” Jones said. “You’re feet flatten out

over time and if the foot isn’t supported a bad angle can develop in your ankle which transfers all the way to your knees, hips

and back.” These problems are especially common in Florida where people wear sandals and flip flops regularly. “That’s the

worst thing you can wear for your feet,” Jones said. Continued on page 80

That brings us to the question of what to do if you’re experiencing foot

pain. At home, Dr. Palladino said you can roll the bottom your foot back

and forth over a frozen water bottle or tennis ball. This effectively stretches

and soothes the muscles on the bottom of the foot. However, the continuous

pounding feet take makes it very difficult to get more than temporary relief with

home remedies. To actually solve foot problems, professional attention is the

best option. Dr. Palladino and Ms. Jones provide two of the elite foot services

in Sarasota. Their products and services can relieve pain and get your game

working in full swing whether it’s golfing the area’s many elite courses, running

the Ringling Bridge or any other activity.

Dr. Palladino knows Sarasota and the most common ailments of its residents

and visitors well. She’s never practiced anywhere else. “After I graduated, I made

a pros and cons list comparing the places I wanted to live,” Palladino recalls.

“It was between Boston and Sarasota. When I got to golf, I put the list away

because Sarasota was the winner.” In her 19 years here, Dr. Palladino has not

only treated patients in her office, buy also has extensive experience casting,

evaluating and manufacturing custom foot orthotics for weekend warriors

and professional athletes alike. “Each foot is different in some way,” Palladino

explained. “People on their feet all day, high impact runners and athletes, those

with hip and knee replacements can all benefit. A custom orthotic is made

specifically for each foot for each patient makes the best combination of support

and balance.”

Ms. Jones caters to the Sarasota area’s runner and walker, of which there is a

vast crossover with golfers. “Sarasota is so active, it’s really fun,” Jones exclaimed.

“A lot of our customers are over 60 and they are running marathons. You don’t

get much of that in the Midwest [Jones is from Ohio].” She and her team at

Fleet Feet Sports use their Fit Process to measure, weigh, and analyze your foot

to detailed specifications. They even take video of customers on a treadmill to

breakdown their gait and find the best shoe for each individual’s needs. What’s

even better about the service is that it doesn’t cost any extra, “It’s just what we

do,” Jones said.

Fleet Feet Sports is located just south of downtown Sarasota, west of

the Trail in Southside Village on South Osprey Avenue. They are open seven

days a week and can be reached at (941) 894-3338 or FleetFeetSarasota.com.

Grip, Check Your Stance, Align… And Read This Before you Swing

While many people consider golf a low-level physical activity,

there is a potential risk of suffering serious injuries. For golfers, a

chance of winning a U.S. Open is over one in a billion, but the chance

of developing back pain is better than one in two. Unfortunately, at

least 50% percent of all people over the age of 50 will report having

had some back pain at least once in their lives and this number is

even higher in those who play golf.

No matter what kind of pain a golfer has, a slow and consistent approach to prevention is a must. First, it is important

to develop an ergonomic swing. It will help with control, distance and lessen stress on your joints and spine. Second, pre-

game warm-up is essential. Take time before you begin, to stretch. This is one of the most important steps to avoiding injury.

Gentle back and neck stretching will allow for warming up of the joints and ligaments. It will also allow for muscle memory

to take over your swing mechanics, thus avoiding awkward swings and “bump-and-runs,” which can put undue stress on

your lower back. Start your training session on the practice range with the club with which you are most comfortable, and

swing at 25-50% of force capacity until you feel that you are maximally warmed up.

Another preventative measure is to strengthen the forearm muscles when you’re off the course. One easy way to do this

is to squeeze a tennis ball five minutes a day. You can also use a lightweight dumbbell, lowering the weight to the end of your

fingers and then curling the weight back into your palm. Do this ten times on each hand and then do wrist curls as well.

Lastly, for those with chronic or intermittent back pain, lumbar stabilization and trunk strengthening exercises are vital.

Poor flexibility and muscle strength can cause minor strains that lead to more severe injuries. If you’re looking for some easy

exercises to help strengthen your back muscles, try these suggestions from the American Society of Orthopedics:

1. Firmly tie the ends of rubber exercise tubing. Place it around an object that is shoulder height (like a door

hinge). Standing with your arms straight out in front of you, grasp the tubing and slowly pull it toward

your chest. Release slowly. Perform three sets of 10 repetitions, at least three times a week.

2. With the rubber tubing still around the door hinge, kneel and hold the tubing over your head. Pull down

slowly toward your chest, bending your elbows as you lower your arms. Raise the tubing slowly over your

head. Perform three sets of 10 repetitions, at least three times a week.

In case of acute pain (something that starts suddenly without warning; swinging, for example) it is important to

immediately stop playing. Rest, ice, and over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications (if approved by your physician)

may help. If the pain does not go away within the first four weeks, or if it is associated with numbness or weakness, a visit

to a medical doctor may be necessary.

COURSE MANAGEMENT: The season of “Major Championships” is upon us. The

common denominator used by all tour players in majors is course management. Majors require extra thought and preparation. They also require the planning skills of a chess grand master in order to succeed. Everyone can learn from the course management strategies employed by tour players that can help shave shots off their score, without any swing changes!

First, watch how the tour players stand on each tee and visually plan how to play each hole. They often work from the green backwards, carefully planning their ideal tee shot position and thus setting up a good approach yardage to the green.

Second, identify if the hole is one that you can attack or one that forces you to play defensively. Some holes, especially at

a major, are good “par holes.” The same applies at your club. If you are playing a defensive hole (a difficult hole), you need to take no risk off the tee. In general, par fives and short par fours are attack holes and long par fours and par threes are defensive holes.

Finally, work on the shots that help you score. Practice pitching the ball precisely 80-90-100 yards. Then work your game plan around leaving that yardage to the green as often as possible. Avoid the gamble involved with attacking a pin that is hard to get to. Play to the center of the green and two-putt.

Put a little extra thought into your game next time out and you can save shots without any need for swing changes!
