HISTORYSCHEDULE
The Glencoe Invitational was
established in 1992 to allow
for more amateur tournament
golf for players from Western
Canada. Over the last 24 years,
the event has evolved into one
of the highest ranked amateur
tournaments in Canada and
also receives international
recognition.
The tournament is listed on the
Golf Canada Order of Merit as
well as the World Amateur Golf
Rankings (WAGR).
The WAGR ranks the top amateur
golfers in the world on the basis
of their average performance in
counting events on a rolling cycle
over the previous 52 weeks. The
Invitational field is typically made
up of those in the top 50 on the
Golf Canada Order of Merit, and
the top Canadian players listed
on the WAGR. Over 50% of our
players are between the ages of
19 and 22. Past tournaments
have included players from New
Zealand, USA, Mexico, Canada’s
National Team and players from
across the country. To date, 66
former participants are now
playing on various professional
tours around the globe. You may
recognize our 2005 Champion,
Graham DeLaet who is one of
the highest ranking Canadian
playing on the PGA tour.

Jared du Toit is our 2016 Glencoe Invitational Champion! Congrats to one of our newest Privileged Intermediate Members. Jared was +2 over 54 holes of stroke play. Conditions were not easy with the wind and the challenging course setup. Thanks to our Turfcare team for the course conditions the players were once again very complimentary about our Forest course.
Coming in second place at +4 was Emmett Oh from Bearspaw. Tied for third at +5 was Evan Holmes from Earl Grey and actually one of the newer members of our Food & Beverage Department as well as Matt Williams who is also one of our newest Privileged Intermediate Members.
Once again thanks to all of our sponsors, volunteers and staff that make this event possible!

Calgary-born, B.C.-raised golfer Jared du Toit among players to watch at Glencoe Invitational
Wes Gilbertson, Calgary Herald
There’s a good chance, a few years back, that you might have spotted the smooth-swinging youngster during one of your divot-digging escapes to the East Kootenays.
Because, by his own admission, Jared du Toit logged as many hours as the mowers at Kimberley Golf Club.
“I would play an outrageous amount of golf there,” du Toit said with a chuckle. “Mom would drop me off early-morning in the summer and we’d stay out there until sundown and just enjoy every minute of it.”
This summer, you could spot du Toit at the mall, at the movies or, most likely, on the fairways and greens at Glencoe Golf & Country Club.
Because the 21-year-old — a representative of Golf Canada’s national amateur team and currently the top guy from the Great White North in the World Amateur Golf Rankings — is once again calling Calgary his birdie-seeking home-base.
“I’m sure I probably took my first golf swings somewhere in Calgary,” said du Toit, who was born in the Stampede City but moved to B.C. before hitting double digits in the age department.
“I did kind of grow up playing golf tournaments with a lot of people in the Calgary area or in Alberta, so I do have a really good friendships here. And there’s a lot more competition here … When you’re surrounded by better players, you feel like you have to elevate your game to compete, and that was a big reason why I did come to Calgary last summer and this summer.
“I definitely feel like surrounding yourself with better competition can only benefit you.”
This week, du Toit is certainly surrounded by top-notch competition.
The Calgary-born, B.C.-raised golfer will be shooting to bring a trophy back to … well … just down the road to his uncle’s basement in Lakeview as one of the favourites at the Glencoe Invitational. The three-round showdown tees off Thursday morning.
Defending champion Conner Hayden of Chilhowie, Va., is back to defend his title on the firm and fast Forest Course at the 45-hole private hangout. Hayden was the only American in the field last summer, but there are eight of ’em for the latest instalment.
The lengthy list of locals is also headlined by Scott Secord (Country Hills) — a two-time winner of the Canadian University/College Championship — and Brett Hogan (Glencoe), who finished in a tie for third at the Invitational last June and triumphed at the Sun Life Financial Men’s Amateur Championship a few weeks later.
Du Toit is one of 14 members of the host club who will tee it up this week, except that it would be a stretch to claim home-course advantage.
After all, the 2015 B.C. Amateur champion is a new intermediate member at Glencoe and — after a trip to the NCAA Championships with the Arizona State Sun Devils and then a third-place performance at the Monroe Invitational in New York — didn’t even arrive in Calgary until the weekend.
He played the Forest for the first time Monday, then gave the 7,505-yard brute another go the following day.
During Wednesday’s tournament-preview media day, du Toit served as a tour-guide-of-sorts for fellow national-teamer Stuart Macdonald of Vancouver.
“I was joking around with a couple of friends, saying ‘It’s probably a good idea to see my home course a couple of times before the event,’ ” du Toit said.
So now, after three practice spins, how about a scouting report?
“I think just the smartest player will get it done,” du Toit said. “There are definitely a lot of big numbers out there.”
Big names, too.
Not yet, but just wait.
Graham DeLaet won this event. Adam Hadwin, David Hearn and others tried.
As du Toit noted during Wednesday’s media scrum, “I think a lot of amateurs at this event, you’ll see them on TV in a couple of years.”
Or in a handful of weeks.
The winner of the Glencoe Invitational will earn a pass to the final qualifier for the PGA Tour’s RBC Canadian Open.
Like all of his teammates in Golf Canada’s national program and so many others in the field at the Glencoe Invitational, du Toit hopes to eventually earn his living on that grand stage.
“As time goes on, I feel like if I keep doing the right things, hopefully my chances will get better and better,” he said. “I think I’m on pace for all my goals, and hopefully this summer, I can stay on pace and maybe even surprise myself with some of my play.”

Top ranked Canadian amateur Jared du Toit chips on the range prior to teeing off in the Glencoe Invitational June 15, 2016 at the Glencoe Golf & Country Club. Ted Rhodes / Calgary Herald
Inspired by a major role model, Jared du Toit crowned champion at 2016 Glencoe Invitational
Wes Gilbertson, Calgary Herald
There was no jubilant jump.
No emotional fist-pump.
No hoots or hollers.
After watching his winning putt drop below ground level, Glencoe Invitational champion Jared du Toit simply exhaled, slowly allowing a little air out of his lungs after three stressful spins of the firm and fast Forest Course at what he’s now calling his home club.
“That’s an unreal golf course. Hard, to say the least,” the Calgary-born and once again Calgary-based du Toit said after clinching his victory with a bogey on his final assignment.
“There are no really easy holes out here. You can definitely make a big number on pretty well every hole. So yeah, it is stressful. Walking off that last green, you’re just relieved that it’s done.
“But it’s a really good championship golf course. I don’t think it gets the recognition it deserves.”
Glencoe’s Forest Course did, indeed, show its teeth this week.
The 21-year-old du Toit signed for a three-round tally of 2-over 218, two shots better than Calgary’s Emmett Oh (Bearspaw).
Two other locals split third spot, with Evan Holmes (Earl Grey) and Matt Williams (Glencoe) each finishing their business in 5-over 221.
All told, 61 competitors combined for three times as many bogeys (992) as birdies (326) on the 7,505-yard brute.
The scoring average for the latest instalment of the Glencoe Invitational — and we’re talking about a field of collegiate golfers and other top-notch amateurs — was a bloated 79.82.
There’s one guy in du Toit’s contact list, though, who was feeling even more stress Saturday.
His friend and Arizona State Sun Devils teammate, Jon Rahm, is digging divots this week at the U.S. Open at Oakmont. Rahm treated himself — or tormented himself? — to two more rounds as the only amateur to survive the 36-hole cut.
When du Toit drained his winning putt, Rahm was sharing a slot on the leaderboard at Oakmont with some fella named Jordan Spieth. (Spieth finished his third round at 4-over, while Rahm was at 7-over when play was suspended due to darkness.)
“Everyone is always surprised to see his name, but all the guys on our team and most people in college golf, we weren’t surprised at all, because he does everything well,” du Toit said of Rahm, who capped his senior campaign as the first two-time winner of the Ben Hogan Award as the NCAA’s best golfer. “He was a huge role model for me this year, and I definitely learned a lot from him.
“Just from a golf standpoint, the guy does everything unbelievable — unreal short game, unreal ball-striking, makes a lot of putts. That’s a pretty good formula, obviously. And he’s the most competitive guy I know, probably. When you have that kind of trait in you, mixed with natural abilities, I don’t want to jinx it, but he’s sort of a can’t-miss kid.”
Raised in Kimberley, B.C., du Toit is more of a late-bloomer, but he’s undoubtedly trending in the right direction.
He’s a first-year selectee to Golf Canada’s national amateur squad and currently the top Canuck in the world amateur golf rankings.
He’s also a new member at Glencoe, and he made quite an introduction over the past few days.
In fact, he’s the first representative of host club to win the Glencoe Invitational since way back in 1995 — the same year in which he was born.
“Coming in, I hate to say it, but based on my own expectations, I was sort of expecting and expected to win. It was really kind of win-or-bust for me,” du Toit admitted. “Just signing that scorecard and coming out on top, it feels pretty good.”
